KauaiShan - 2009-05-06 6:05 PM Crikee - this board moves fast!  Just got back from Kauai and I'm behind almost 20 pages.

Anywhooo... actually got my butt in the ocean and tried to deal with the shark issue. It didn't help that we went fishing the day before and got a barracuda. Nice...    Still, I got in the ocean, which I haven't done  in far too many years.

Also realized how addicted I've gotten to training.  I was itching to get on a bike the whole time I was there. Turns out there was sprint Tri there on Saturday. Defintely adding it to my list of goals for 2010.

OK, back to catching up on posts - just wanted to say HI and that I missed you all and your insipiration!

Don't feel bad, I haven't been anywhere and I can't stay caught up either!  Congrats on the OWS swim.  My wife shares that same fear of sharks!  The key is not to be faster than the shark, just faster than the slowest swimmer!

Suzy - I don't think 50*F is comfortable for swimming, doesn't matter if you're talking about the water or the air.

I think I'm going for the marathon.  I've spent a good chunk of my day looking at training plans and this is doable.  I may even have talked my SIL that lives in Portland into doing it - though the half might be better for her since she's new to running (weeks, not the months that I have )

Trevor - Last year right before my half I was having a hip issue that was puting pressure on a nerve, giving me leg pain and tingling.  I went to an acupuncturist - stop lauging, one 20 min  treatment and I ran the half marathon 3 or 4 days later and have been pain free since (at least in my hip).

I've done a ton of stretches, etc today and it seems to really have loosened up. I have a fascia type massage booked for tomorrow after work. We'll see how it goes. Right now i just need to STRETCH! I am such a bad stretcher.  I need to do it more. But I am believer in acupunture as well. Had a pinched nerve in my shoulder a few years back, and it worked wonders.
I've been readin a bunch today, and I'm convinced its Piriformis syndrome. We will see.

Darn you Matt, now I have to sign up for a full instead of a half!!!!    I've been toying with the idea of doing the Walt Disney World Marathon in January and now since you stepped up to a challenge I can't cop out.   Just have to convince the hubby this is a vacation worth taking this year!

I decided if I was going to run complete a full marathon it must have a great location.  I don't have a strong desire to do the distance on its own, more like one of those HAVE TO requirements, so it had better be in a kick butt location.  It doesn't get better than Disney World!

Now it is all mental.  I should change my signature to running DOESN'T suck, running DOESN'T suck!!!!

If you are going to do Disney you have to do the Goofy challenge.

For the 1/2 on Saturday you get a Donald Duck Medal
For the Full on Sunday you get a Mickey Mouse Medal
If you do both you get a third Goofy Medal

Only thing about Disney is it starts very, very, very early because they want everyone to be done by the time the parks open up.

We were going to try to squeeze Disney in this year but my wife really wants to do the Goofy challenge and wern't sure if we were ready for that this year. So I believe this is a definite for next year for us to do.

Come on, you can't go all the way down there and not get all 3 medals.  Just jog/walk the 1/2 will be a good stretch and warmup for the full the next day : )

You better hurry though because its nearing capacity.  Also i don't think you get all three medals.  "Just" the 1/2 and goofy.  Do you still run through the underground sewage plant ...i heard that was the biggest complaint.  peeeyyyew!!!!!

Along the same lines... Lonestar Triathlon Festival (same guy who puts on Timberman) moved the 1/4 IM from Sunday to Saturday and changed it to an OLY.  So now we have a sprint and OLY on Satudray and a HIM on Sunday.  Keith (RD) is talking about having a special wave start the sprint for those of us wanting to do all three.  The OLY starts an hour after the sprint.  So the last wave of the OLY will be those of us doing both.  How's that for a weekend of racing... Sprint immedialety followed by OLY.  Then a HIM the next day.

Nope sorry, you and your wife are definitely smoking something. Must be that D.C. air or Potomac water.  I'll buy the other 2 medals on E-Bay.  Talk to Suzy or Steve.  They are the crazy running fools around here!!!

Maybe the new aero position is cutting off oxygen to his brain - there's a reason its a Goofy medal.

I've heard Fitday.com is a good place to start. I don't really track very closely anymore though.

It must be something in the Texas air..Swine maybe???
And Tracy, I know a girl up here who did the Goofy Challenge this year and said it was the best race she has ever done.
That being said, not being a runner, there is NO WAY I would aspire to that.

John, that is awesome!  I would assume it one big long race, as opposed to 2 seperate races!  Very interesting concept!

Tracy, both would be an experience, but tough.  I would say if you and your hubby want to "jog/walk" the 1/2 then go for it, but for your 1st marathon I would shy away from it.  Would be fun, but may be brutal!

Don't worry, there never was any chance of my doing something like that.  I think a full marathon is crazy enough.  And my hubby won't touch this distance with a ten foot poll!!   He already thinks I'm crazy!

Maybe we should organize the mentor group into a relay for the weekend and change our name to the Goofy Mentor Group.   I could pull a couple miles..... (ha ha ha)

Do you all use the BT training plans?  I just imported the Basic Oly Plan.  I have never used a training plan before and wondered what others thought about their benefits or drawbacks?
And, I may regret this, but I uploaded a swim video to my profile.  I am open to any and all criticism or suggestions!  Please try to be kind!!  Didn't we have a member many pages ago who offered to help analyze swim videos or answer questions? Who was that??

Thanks in advance for any help.

I used the Trinewbies Intermediate OLY and liked it but I switched BT for the HIM because it moves the workouts around.  With TN it was swim M,W, & F every week.  Same with bike and run.

Sorry but I have nothing to add about the video other than its really cool.    Hell to me you look like Summer Sanders.

I'm using the Oly Basic 12 Week plan right now... kind of.  I follow the basics of the plan, so I know that I should have x number of bikes for x amount of time per week; but I don't do exactly as the day suggests.  I know you can edit any plan to make it fit your schedule (work and race) but I haven't invested in the time to do that yet.

Hi Andy

The best way to know how many calories to take in each day is the start by getting your basal metabolic rate tested which is a fancy measurement of how many calories you burn if you did absolutely nothing. You can then use somethinglike Fitday.com to calculate your activity and normal daily calorie expenditure.  A lot of health clubs will measure BMRs and it is pretty inexpensive to do.

The other thing I would say is if you are not losing weight, it might be what you are eating that keeps you hungry.  Combining complex carbs with a little protein and fat (gasp!) will help you feel fuller longer.
