I bought some wheat rolls today, I do love peanut butter and jelly ANYTIME! Also Nutella on bread, although I tend to just eat the Nutella straight from the jar.

And this is precisely why I no longer keep Nutella in the house.  It becomes a meal in a jar.  And holy smoley I just realized that is Apolo Anton Ohno in your Avatar.  Drool.

They sell that stuff in large amounts at Costco.  I have since then joined NAA. lol.

I met AAO back in October and immediately after seeing this picture I got my hair cut short.  He was really nice.  Even signed my Vancouver 2010 jacket

I just checked the weather, its supposed to get down to 8 deg here tomorrow and I was planning a long run... Oi. Bummer. I really want to get my long run in but darn thats really COLD! Have any of you heros run 6-7 more mile in this kind of weather? Is it a sufferfest? I sometimes have a hard time breathing when it gets that cold : /  I'M SO OVER WINTER -even though yesterday I was saying I love winter running, there is a limit to how cold I can take it! And no way can I tolerate going around and around the track at my gym 28 times!  Its going to be all about the treadmill I guess

I've done 11 miles in 16 degrees, never run when the temp is in the single digits, although it looks like tomorrow's run will change that.  I have some trouble with breathing when it gets below 20.  I have to start out slower and usually after 15 minutes or so I seem to be OK.  Tomorrow will be interesting.
And I just checked the plan, and my run is 12, not 13 miles.

Have only done a few miles in single digits.  I wear a thin neck gaiter and spend most of the run pulling it up until my breathing warms up, pushing it down until I'm cold again rinse and repeat.  Can do the same thing with a scarf but I really like the neck gaiter better.

Have fun ladies and keep the cold to yourselves.  Like Corncub I really enjoy winter running but I'm ready for it to start warming up.  Too much of a good thing is still too much

Raises hand...I've done double-digit runs in single-digit temps.  Really, the first 2 miles are the worst.  If you're not cold at the beginning, you're way overdressed.  I usually end up with frost on my jacket and hat when I run in this kind of weather.  One run last year, the sweat froze into little cubes over my ears.  About half-way through the run, it sounded like I was wearing a helmet and I was worried that I had damaged my ears.  When I reached up and felt the ice cubes, I was relieved.  Even in single digits, I'm generally a sweaty mess by the end.

My 10 miler was in 12 deg.... I've done half mary's around the same temp. I agree it's hard the first 2 mi and then good from there out. Not uncommon to have icicles coming off the ends of my hair or on my eyelashes....

I made the 8am spin class!!! I was starving when I was done. I didn't eat much before hand though, I just can't stomach food that early in the morning.  Does anyone have any recommendations on what to eat that early?  I like smoothies but never know if that's enough...

The good thing about eating as soon as you can in the morning is that it kick starts your metabolism which runs slower until the first meal of the day..
Whole wheat english muffins with cream cheese and oatmeal are a couple of my favs.

def agree with eating when you get up.... don't wait. I don't have a prob eating anytime but my morning fav's are oatmeal w/ nana and pb, also yogurt w/ cereal and berries is a good one. Even if it's something small i suggest eating before working out.

I think I felt sick at the thought of being up at 6:45am on a Saturday. Went and bought some stuff yesterday that I can eat easily.

I skipped the spin class this morning. Going out with a local bicycle club for a mellow 35 mile ride.  It will be my longest ride since getting fitted for my bike last September!   What's everyone else up to?

Well, still haven't joined the single digit club.  It was 11 degrees at the start of our run  And since it was sunny, with very little wind, it wasn't bad at all.  During the run I remarked to my friend that I was very glad this was the last week of Jan.  Somehow when you hit Feb it's like turning the corner on winter, (even though Feb can be just as wintery as Jan), it's a psychological boost.

Congrats on the run!
I totally agree about February. My b-day is on the 23rd and one reason I look forward to it is because by that time winter is almost over!  We get occasional snow afterwards and some cooler temps but not like we get in January.  I'm ready for this winter to be over.  We got another 1-1 1/2" today on top of what we got earlier this week but no precipitation of any kind is predicted for the next 7 days.  Yeah!!

Suzimmer, I think you could count today as a run in single digit temps, you had a 12.17mph wind chill on you the entire time, that lowers perceived temp ; )
I've never had any particular feeling about February except that groundhogs day is my favorite minor holiday.

McFuzzies,

For training in a pool:

If your wearing a swim cap the chlorine can still be harsh on your hair.

TIP: Get your hair wet in the shower, & before you put your cap on put conditioner on your hair.  Put your cap on, and go about your swim.  Once your done with your swim & are ready to take your cap off go to the shower & rinse the conditioner out of your hair.  This should help your hair from drying out so bad.

Hope this helps - Maria

ingleshteechur - 2011-01-22 11:16 AM Happy weekend McFuzzies!  Good luck to any racers!

Thanks for the youtube info on swimming.  Here's my question:  when I do my swims I am breathing to the right with every stroke 80% of the time.  In the middle of my workout I'll work on bilateral every stroke and then bilateral every third stroke.  Since all my swimming is open water should I be moving towards breathing every third stroke or is it personal preference/comfort?  Is one way more efficient for distance swimming?

Lots of people told me that I "had to" learn to breathe on both sides.  They say it will help you swim straighter in open water.  I think it just depends on what you are comfortable with.  You can teach yourself to swim straight even if you always breathe on the same side.  I breathe on the right every other stroke.  Works fine for me, I can still swim straight, and keep up with almost everyone I swim next to.

I always try to remember that the best way to be ready for a fast bike split is to expend the least amount of energy to go the speed I want to travel in the water.  I try to make every movement in the water one that propells me forward with the least amount of work.

Swimoutlet.com has amazing swimmers shampoo and conditioner. I swore by it when I had longer hair, now I don't have to bother much.

I had a fun day today biking.  It was dry and not too cold. Managed to get in 31 miles. My longest ride in I don't know!   I joined the Cascade Bicycle Club (The people that I rode with) and signed up for my 1st century in June!!!  Still debating the Seattle to Portland ride for now, just trying to figure out the clubs training rides...they charge for them and it's already sold out. Eeek!!!

Right on.  I practice bilateral breathing because it helps make the stroke symmetrical.  When it comes to racing, I get 50% more O2 breathing on one side, sometimes the right, sometimes the left.  Good to know how to breath on both sides too in case of sun or waves from one side.

We still have three solid months of winter! no use  getting excited here just yet.

Ran 4.5 miles on the treadmil tonight at the gym while watching the bears/packers game.  Actually went a half mile longer than I was planning b/c it was so close. Will do an additional run and yoga tomorrow.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Those are all great points IceMan and nothing I would have ever thought of.  I do wonder though since I breathe on only my left side, eventually this would create a muscle imbalance right?

I have to tell you, I'm really impressed with your progress and diligence. My Mother got us into swimming lessons when we were 3 to 4 y/o and we took them every summer through junior high school. Then we spent every day at the pool all summer. I'm lucky she did that.

You are going to kick serious butt at this rate my friend!! Continued good progress to you!!

ingleshteechur - 2011-01-22 11:16 AM Happy weekend McFuzzies!

Right on.  I practice bilateral breathing because it helps make the stroke symmetrical.  When it comes to racing, I get 50% more O2 breathing on one side, sometimes the right, sometimes the left.  Good to know how to breath on both sides too in case of sun or waves from one side.

Those are all great points IceMan and nothing I would have ever thought of.  I do wonder though since I breathe on only my left side, eventually this would create a muscle imbalance right?

So they tell me.  I have this picture of me swimming in a big circle out there as I breathe from one side.   Swimming is all about trying to be as efficient in the water as possible.  So both sides should mirror the other. both good.  The strong side teaches the weak side if you give it a chance.  Best tips for swimming from a guy who has been doing masters a couple of years:
- Exhale as soon as your face is in the water and completely.  You will draw in more air that way.
- When that moment comes after starting when you feel like you are going to burst from no air?  Keep going.  It disappears. You can swim right through it.  Just go easy until it passes. Once it does, you will feel like you can swim forever.
- Practice bi lateral breathing because the sun is fierce in the eyes if you can't take in air from the other side.  A steady wind can create waves, too.  And, you want your body nice and even so even if you breathe from one side during a race, practice bilaterally so you are equally strong on both sides;
- Practice with fins.  This really helped me with my kick and my body turn.  The body turn is key to the proper kick.  Too much and the kick degenerates.  You want to feel like you have fins on.
Just my thoughts.  I can tell you that I saw really good progress through last year's HIM, but since T Day, the progress has been exponential.

Have a great day.
