Despite some race results to the contrary, I've always considered myself a swimmer.  I don't really like OWS, but it doesn't bug me.  CdA really brought it home....panic can hit anyone.  Got to admit, my swim there has been on my mind for 10 months.  I would never swim with just one other person OWS, yet I REALLY need to get some OW practice in.

AFTER Big Sur.......

So if you don't mind that i am waaaaay slower than you, i will drive all the way down your way if you can show me some water above 65F!    And I will bring peasant pies and wine (or donuts if you prefer!)

btw, i am trying to decide between silicon valley intl oly on June 12 vs. sacramento June 5th....is Lake almaden still Duck Poop lake?

Would LOVE to have an OWS swim partner!!  Don't have a clue as to water temps, though.....I've only swam at Coyote point (once) and at the Quarry in Pleasanton.  See?  I need practice!   Yes, it's still duck poop lake.  I MAY do that race - still contemplating schedules......but if I don't, and I'm in town, I'll come cheer!!!

funny how a number can make your stomach feel a little weird.

ironman texas bib number 1235.

OOOOOOOOH!!!  1235 - sounds FAST.  And snake-proof.

Has anyone ever been snake-bit in an IM swim?

Would it be an advantage or hindrance?  You may get an adrenaline boost, if there's no real venom involved.  Venom, now that's a problem.

Are there alligators or crocodiles in Texas?

It's drawing near!!  No, not the ROYAL WEDDING Tongue out.....but another weekend of racing!  I know of at least one gent in this group doing a killer half, but what about the rest of you?

If you're not racing, let's talk about OWS....what do you do to prepare yourself for the plunge? rituals each time that help you keep calm? or swim like the devil (e.g.our 1 hr IM swimmers--Linda/Kyla!)

No racing for me.  I was planning to do a 10 mile race on Friday, but they sent me the entry fee back about a week ago.  The city hosting the race is only about 40 miles from the nuke plant and I'm sure they have their hands full dealing with other issues.

The ritual that worked best for me was getting in the water about 30 minutes before the start of the race and doing a really good warmup.   That strategy didn't work for my last race .  After the warmup period, they made everyone sit around and listen to speeches for like 30 minutes - no fun when you're sitting in a wet suit in the sun.

I have not had any problems getting out of my wet suit.  I use a 2-piece De Soto and the leg openings are cut on an angle similar to what Suzy described.

1235 will be the number of people you blow by in T1. Actually 12:35 should be the time you will be ready to get off the bike.

i hope this is just a mean rumor.

Oh John, rattling the cage again huh... I mean, I know I'm not fast, but am I now the standard for slow swimming?  Ok ok, I probably am, but still... cheap shot...

Ha, um, let's see... I would start off by running, then run some more, and finish it off with some running.  The first half will be the toughest, exceeded only by the second half.  I would eat and drink just the right amount (not too much... don't want to get sloshy; not too little... don't want to bonk!), and watch your pacing on those hills.

How was that?  Shall I invoice you for my coaching insights?

Hervey Bay Olympic tri for me this Sunday, weather looking like it's settling down so hoping for a nice swim.

I've never peed in any wetsuit, scuba or surfing, mainly because it attracts the sharks...!

Good luck everyone in their races this weekend!!!

Great # John and very cool that it's now REALLY official.  :-)

All of the this snake, alligator talk gets me even more freaked out about the water.  Although I am better w/ safety in numbers.  And one more thing about the freaked out people for IM Texas - It goes back to what I wrote that you have to be  smart and confident in your abilities.  They never should have signed up for that race knowing or not knowing what water temps could do in Texas at that time of year.  If you need a wetsuit for 2.4m then swim in a butt cold lake!

And speaking of snakes, Great Falls Park is loaded w/ copperheads.  I've lived in VA all of my life and seen them, avoided them and basically no big deal.  Well there are warning in the park about them and my 50k has about 10m in and around the park.  Didn't really think about it til I read some reports from last years race.  The week of the race 2 people were bitten in the park and one runner saw one during the race and had to jump over it in mid-stride.  Hummmm - I might have to rethink this trail running thing.

Come to Wisconsin....we have ultras galore and it's so dang cold here all the time snakes couldn't possibly survive! Snow flakes greeted me this morning....this is bordering on ridiculous.

Wow, snow!

We had tornados here this morning, the worst since 1974, things are still running as normal though.

I'd love to do an ultra in WI. Western MD is too full of rollers and mountains and snakes ; )

Hey David,

Good luck this weekend!!  Have you done an Olympic before?  I'm curious about how you moved your swimming up from the sprint distance to the olympic.  Seems A LOT longer!

Can't wait to see the race report.

This is an article in Bicycling magazine about taking 2 over-the-counter pain relievers to help build strenth (study included ages 60-78).  I am curious what everyone thinks? I don't like to take ANYTHING if possible.
