Coach gave me the option of a rest day or an easy spin on the trainer. At first I was going to take a rest day, but about 3:30 I decided I was bored enough to want to get out the trainer. 30’ of light spinning done.

Anyone have big plans for the holiday weekend? My wife is out of town, so I’m expecting it to be pretty low key. I’d like to finish staining the patio set I built—got most of it stained and just needed to flip and do the undersides when Laura hit us and it rained for 10 days straight here. Today has been the first clear day, so cost one went on this afternoon.

The weather is supposed to be wonderful here this weekend - sunny, 80s, low humidity.  Planning on about 60-70 miles worth of riding tomorrow and Sunday and then a day off Monday where I'll probably work on the yard a bit.  With all the rain we've add in the past five weeks and temperatures cooling a bit our grass grows like an inch a day LOL.

Got three more stages in my "Tour" done, two in the virtual New York world and one in Richmond.  One of the days was a race and included a Cat 4 climb so some good efforts.  140 miles or so total so far over the seven days.

Hi Guys,

2nd rest week of the training plan done and dusted.

S: x 1, 25 minutes 1000m (Yay for the pool being open again)
B: x 5, 3 hours
R: x 2, 2 hours

Total 5 hr 25 min. Would have preferred a 2nd swim, and a slightly longer 'long bike' to get up to the 6 hour mark. But over all happy with what I got done.

This week, I should be looking for around 8 1/4 - 8 1/2 hours total. Started things off right with a swim before work this morning.

How was everyone else's weeks?

Mike Nice work with your virtual tour de france. 21/23 days cycling to come is definitely going to cure any taper madness. Good luck

Gretchen N+1 for the win. I know very little about gravel bikes, but they are a hot topic of discussion over on the slowtwitch website. checkout some of the articles/bike reviews if you haven't already https://www.slowtwitch.com/Gravel/index.htmlAnd I look forward to the upcoming bike p0rn.

Glad you enjoyed your first outside bike in forever. I'm not quite that bad, but of my 80ish hours on the bike this year, about 6 have been outside... the trainer/spin bike is just too damn convenient.

saph/Nathalie No interest in cold water swimming like that at all. I'm sure it's good for you but the only ice I want involved with my swimming is in a drink at a swim up bar somewhere tropical.

me As per the post above, I'm happy with my rest week. Still did something every day, but lots of 30ish minute workouts, so nothing strenuous. It was fathers day in Aus/NZ on Sunday, unfortunately I'm not as lucky as Gretchen so no new bike. But I did get a new pair of running shoes. Properly fitted at the specialty store. Asics Gel Kayanos, which I'm told have a bit more ankle support than what I have been in, so hopefully the end of my rolled ankle days.

Have a good week everyone.

I had a pretty good go at cutting off the end of my right index finger on Friday night while carving a wooden owl toy, so it has been a pretty frustrating weekend for me. So thankful we have an urgent care facility less than two miles from the house (and that they were still open at 7:30pm!). About a cm lower and I would have gone through the joint and probably lost the fingertip. Fortunately, the bone stopped the knife and I ended up with five stitches (should have been six) and a moon shaped cut that circles my index finger from just under the nail to the middle of the finger pad. Everything this weekend has really been about discovering exactly how many times a day you use your dominant hand index finger! It is a lot. I thought breaking my left ring finger in the spring was a hassle! That pales in comparison to this!!

Damn, that sounds nasty.

Heal up well and hope you're back in to it soon.

In other news, I have got a cold or something. Again. So having to take it easy, just when my shoulder was getting better and I had started running a bit.
It never ends!!!

Hubby wants to build an extension to the garage just for the bikes, so I talked him into making it real nice, warm and comfy so I can have a trainer in there (with zwift of course so I can join Mike on races), maybe adding a treadmill for when the weather is really bad, it will save going to the gym and catch .

It certainly wasn't my best idea, that's for sure!

Fortunately, it is healing quite well and I'm now down to a band-aid only at home, which helps some, because at least I can type without too much discomfort (or typos from the giant bandage!). Most frustrated I've been in a long time was trying to get a bottle of soda open Sunday night. I had to ask my wife to do it for me...

Up early this morning for a short run and then later there will be a trainer ride--no biking outside for a while, since I can't grip the brakes hard enough to stop safely.

Yes, a new pain cave!!  You won't regret it.

One bit of advice I'll give is to make sure you hard-wire the internet connection if you're going to use Zwift or streaming services...makes a huge difference.

I'm through 10 stages now, having finished a virtual one in Richmond and two here in Baltimore outdoors.  I have about 210 miles in so far.  Saturday's effort had the most outdoor climbing I've ever done, about 1,400 feet over 40 miles.  Sunday was more of a flat recovery ride, off Monday (like the real Tour ), then we flew virtually across the pond and I did today's stage in Yorkshire.

Speaking of the real Tour, if you haven't had a chance to watch any the racing has been excellent.

It has been amazing! Shame yesterday wasn't very windy though. I finish my old job today and plan no watching every stage between now and the end in Paris.

Medium run today in the fog. Fog is somewhat difficult to breathe in, so coupled with a really poor night of sleep, it wasn’t the best run. But, it is done.

Good first half of the week for me. 2 swims, 3 bikes and 2 runs done. A short recovery spin and my long bike and run to come over the next few days.

My new running shoes feel great... definitely less ankle/food pain than the mizunos. So happy with my purchase.

Gretchen Good that your finger is on the mend.

Nathalie I'm very jealous of your new pain cave on the way... In the before time (before kids) I had a bedroom set up as a pain cave. Now, with 1 kid and a wife who now works from home I've been relegated to a cupboard... And wit kid #2 on the way, I'm about to be evicted from that too.

Have a good weekend guys.

Thanks, I am pretty excited about it. Although it’s not going to be called a pain cave but a fun place. I don’t believe in pain. Probably why I still call myself a try-athlete.

After being down all day yesterday with a migraine, I was up early this morning and got in an hour run. It is so humid her I feel like I should count it as a swim though!

I’d count it as both.

So, how’s everybody? Slowly getting over the sh*t virus I caught and looking forward to training again, now that the collarbone is on the mend. Been watching triathlon videos on you tube to get inspired. That women’s race in the 2012 olympics, wow! Felt sorry (again) for Lisa Norden, the Swede who came 2nd by a 100th of second. Incidentally, I met her last year as she was volunteering at a race I did in her home town. Didn’t ask her about that....

Good finish for my week. Got a long run, which felt great, and a longish bike. Totals for the week:

S: x 2, 55 min, 2000m total
B: x 5, 5hr total
R: x 3, 2 hr 40 total.

Total of 8 1/2 hours.

I gave myself a bit of a project this weekend. I've been using my single speed/commuter bike for my outside training rides, as my race bike hasn't been used for 3 years and is in need of a bit of a birthday to bring her back to life. But as you can imagine sitting bolt upright, with flat handle bars isn't ideal. So The last couple of weeks I've been thinking about putting some drop bars on. Anyway, after a couple hours work with Mr 3, and some unused parts from lying around I've gone beyond drop bars, and I'm now in possession of a single speed TT trainer.

After a 2 hour ride on Sunday, the stem is too long, so the bull horns are further forward than I'd like. But otherwise seems to work pretty well, and my only expense was some bar tape and brake cable.

I'm not sure if it's cool or silly tho... Part of me thinks its cool, but only if ridden by a strong enough cyclist to lay some smack down on more expensive bikes. Which isn't me... yet. Either way it was more fun to ride than the flat bars.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend.
