yeah I still have no clue why a 12/27 is better than a 12/25?

GP160 - 2009-07-01 10:39 PM Ok, I think I have a 10-25...its that possible?  Counted 10 cassettes and there are 25 teeth on them....what is the advantage of a 12/27?
More teeth on your largest cog will give you a higher gear ratio making it easier to climb hills. The difference between an 11-25 and a 12-27 is noticeable on a hilly course. It is nice to have the 12-27 because it can help save your legs for the run. The "11" on the 11-25 is really a downhill gear and most people won't push that hard on the downhill.

dumb it down for me a bit...I know that right now I have 2 cassettes up front, in the back I have 10. On my old road bike I had 3 up front and the extra one was called a 'granny gear' by the bike shop guys.  Is the extra cassette up front better for hill climbing?  I live in a very hilly area and have had no problems with my current set up.  Yeah some of the hills are tough and I have to stand on the bike to climb them but will the extra few teeth really make a huge difference?  I know IMKY has rolling hills but are they hilly enough that you need to swap out your cassettes?

The front are chain rings not cassettes. You prob. have a 53/39 set-up in the front. When we talk about a 12-27 or a 11-25 we are talking about the cogs on the cassette in the rear. Swapping out a cassette is very easy and people do it all the time. You may be OK with an 11-25 but if you are not going to use the "11" anyway why not give yourself some insurance if you need a lower gear ratio on a bigger hill or later in the race?

Thanks!  Your most helpful.  Gosh I never knew there was so much to think about.  The next 2 months are going to be overwhelming!  I'll talk to my bike shop about this asap.

Protein can help as another poster claims, but if you are also eating solid foods and are still hungry then you just arent getting enough calories period.  Im 6'0" 170lbs and I take in about 350-400 calories per hour on the bike and a little less on the run.  You probably need to switch to something a little stronger than gatorade or something that you can concentrate to get more calories in the same amount of liquid.

mikep - 2009-07-01 10:14 AM Speaking of hungry.  I find that I get hungry often during long workouts.  Like my stomach feels empty, hungry.  I eat cliff bars about every 40 minutes, drinking water and gatorade too.  Even a few gels along the way.  Any suggestions on what else I can add or change?  It seems as though I can stomach quite a bit without getting upset so bring it on.

Question for those who have done an IM before....I am scheduled to ride in a MS 150 ride on 9/12-9/13.  Is this doable in your opinion (as far as being recovered)?

It just depends on how fast you recover.  Everyone recovers at a differnt rate.  Also, how fast are you planing on riding the MS 150?  Easy pace?

**Rant**
With less than 7 weeks to taper and I just fell off the wagon!!!  So much so that I got run over by the bloody thing!!!  Got back from our family vacation (10 days) and I managed to get in 1 11.1 mile run the whole time!! Damn!
I am going to get back on the bike (and maybe a very short 3 mile run afterwards) tomorrow but I can't build into my normal volume too quickly and I have the 1/2 in Muncie next freaking weekend !! Holy cow......I'm freaking out!
**Rant off**

Yeah MI has been crappy too.  High 50's today.  I went out for a quick ride and it was cold and pretty damp in the air.  I was actually worried that I was going to get sick.  Thankfully though I think that it's supposed to get a bit warmer over the weekend which will make training a lot nicer.

Just an FYI for all of you looking at changing your cassettes.  Don't forget that by going from a 11-23 to a 12-26 etc that you lose some gears in the middle.  Not "lose" them, but you might lose your 18t gear for a 17t or something like that. Not sure which one's you lose, but they switch them up.  It doesn't seem like much, but you will need to get used to it.  I have a gear that i love to push when i'm in my big ring and when i got race wheels with an 11-23 i kept clicking back and fourth in the back trying to find that gear and i couldn't.  Eventually i adjusted and its fine now.  But its just something to think about.

That's why I joked of 86 being a cold front.  Over the last two weeks we've had 4 days in the 100's and the rest have been 94 or higher.

Not letting my AC separation keep me out of the game .  Rode 50 miles on the Louisville IM course tuesday starting with the out n back (rd 1694) and then around the loop once.  Its going to be a great ride come race day.  Though I'm sure the temp in the mid 70's Tuesday put me in a very pleasent mood.  How did the group rides go on the course recently?  Seemed to be quite a bit of traffic the day i hit it.  But hey I only got the finger once :P.  Still can't swim for another couple weeks .  Looks like i'm doing bike/run for Muncie.  Hope to maybe see a few of you there.

It was 85 in VA today, got in 100 miler, I guess I must be doing something wrong because I only had 4 gels and a fig newton on the ride. I did drink 4 bottles of Infinit so maybe i'm getting enough calories from that.

I live in KY and the whole summer has been cooler than normal.  High has been mid-70's the last couple days!  Would enjoy it more if I weren't so worried about getting ready to run in the IMLOU oven.  Maybe race day will be cool this year.

We've actually had hot weather here - well hot for us! Been in the mid-80's during this week, which has been good to train in.

Last weekend though I had to cut short my long ride as I rode into thick fog!! It's raining now so looks like our heatwave is over and we'll be back to our normal high 60's temperatures. Not what I need

Did my longest ride to date so far in training.  71 miles/5 hours, nice easy pace.  I felt good and the infinit/gels/cliff bar worked great. Cool temps here in PA still....
