Thanks for the advice.  I am losing weight (2-3lbs a week), my concern is that I don't want to starve myself either as I don't want to start breaking down muscle in order to get energy.  I will check with my health club on BMR testing.  I have looked at a lot of calculators that say I should be in the 3500 cal/day range to maintain weight.  Therefore 3000 cal /day would cause loss of a pound per week.   That matches with my current intake and weight loss as well (1500 cal per day deficit = losing a 2-3 lbs per week) The only thing that holds me back is that my doctor said that 3k calories per day was twice what I should be eating.  They are supposed to know stuff right?

It gets difficult when you add in exercise.  Usually charts are for people that don't exercise much but want to lose weight so they try a calorie deficit type diet.

Problem is once you get really training you need fuel to keep yourself going.

So any calculators you look at make sure they take into account how much work you are doing.

Said nicely, most doctors don't know crap about nutrition.  I have several friends who are MDs and they get like two days of nutrition as part of their core class load.   If you feel off, weak or tired, you probably are not eating enough or the right stuff.  I know I keep saying the right stuff part, bbut it really does make a difference.  When I eat well, I train well. When I don't, I don't.  How is that for good use of language?!?

Tracy--I think it is great you are tackling the marathon.  I will love swimming as much as you love running.

I'm off to the Elton John/Billy Joel concert tonight.  Paul's lawyer is taking us to their box so it should be some good viewing.   Saw them a couple of years ago and they put on a really good concert.

By the way, while things looked dark all week, I am walking myself off the ledge.  Thanks for all of the inspires and suggestions regarding swimming.  I'm not giving up, I'm not changing my race schedule, and I am not making so many changes to my stroke all at once.  I'm a slow learner.

Karen, I am no expert, and no coach, and probably do everything wrong myself, but there were a couple things I noticed (which again you could be doing right!!).... I have never had a lesson either, so I don't know what is proper and not proper.....

1st.)  Your feet are really low in the water (more so towards the end of the video), but this is dragging your whole back side DOWN.... Creating you to work that much harder to keep afloat, and going forward.  If you are going to kick as often as your are doing (which I try not to do... Saving all the energy in my legs for a bike and run) try and keep you kick splashing.  This way you know that you are keeping your rear in the air....

2nd)  You are swinging back and fourth a lot.... I think you would to try and keep you body tight, and streamline until you go to breath.... It just seems like you are wasting a lot of energy swinging back and fourth after every stroke.  Try to keep you body tight, and then when it is time to breath, ROLL your body to the side just enough to catch some air.  Don't over do it.  It should never look like you are actually changing your stroke to breath.  Do it all in stroke.

3rd) I don't think it is a big deal, and not necessary, but if you can work on your bilarteral breathing that may help you in the long run during races.  During Ironman last year the sun was rising on side that I never wanted to look that direction so I went to the other way for the rest of that direction.

Your arms, hands, elbows, and entry look great!  Really try and stretch the upper body.  Reach for the sky on your strokes, and when you are swimming through your stroke, pull like you are climbing a latter!

Overall this is small stuff easy to fix.  You do look great!

Suzy have a great time at the concert.  They're both amazing in concert, i can't imagine them together!  One great concert.  Our friend lives right bellow Billy Joel, they actually can hear him practicing when they go on their terrace!  I guess you can say they have amazing condo perks..

I'm actually a bit jealous.  My wife loves Billy Joel's music, so I've actually grown a liking for it also.  We went and saw the Billy Joel musical Movin' Out.  It was great, I've since been a closet fan.

Still a good job, a podium/medal finish is exactly that - a medal'd finish.  You finished sub 25!  That's awesome!

I proudly claimed my 1st AG finish at a local indoor tri even though there were only 6 in my AG.  I say congrats!

Hi John--YEAH for you.  Great job on the AG placement.  I think it IS a big accomplishment. Be proud.

Karen--I looked at your video. Thanks for sharing it. First, is that an endless pool?  does it feel different from swimming in a lap pool? pretty interesting way to isolate your movement.  You are a better swimmer than me, but since I just had one done and got similar advice I will provide it. When breathing your other hand/arm leaves early which may cause you to lift your head slightly and sink your legs. Your above the water (Q1) looks great as does your rotation.  Since I am always seeking advice myself, how do you feel about your swimming?

Concert last night was AWESOME!  They started playing together, then Elton for an hour, Billy for an hour and they ended up together again.  Not one intermission. The concert lasted almost four hours!  I'm pooped and we have another jazz concert to attend tonight.  For those that know Madison, it is at Union Terrace on campus.  A place I spent a lot of time in college (and I wasn't studying!).  Make it a great day.

What's on tap for the weekend?

Sidi Zeta Mega size 49  These really are not tri shoes but it was all I could find and I spent weeks looking for shoes.    You might have seen the size thread on ST a bit ago on larger size shoes...  looks like the same issue for people w/ big feet.

Wishing I was racing w/ Linda @ Gulf Coast!

My plan has all three back to back Saturday morning but that ain't happening because I have to get in some hills and have to drive almost an hour to find some.  I might run after in said hills or come home and run then swim.

Early Sunday morning, OWS w/ some folks from the tri club.  The rest of the day hanging out at my neighbors pool.  My wife is awesome and real laid back.  Drinking beer with the bbq fired up playing w/ the kiddos is her ideal Mothers Day....to bad someone knocked her up and she can't drink.  Trevor if that kid comes out Canadian, I'm coming after you.

I have two pair.  The only ones I have used so far are a pair of shimano's that lace up.  I replaced the laces with some yankz and they seem to work pretty well.  I just finished setting up a pair of Louis Garneau Tri shoes designed for sprints.  I get to go try them out tonight.  I found them on clearance at Tri-sports.  I'll let you know how they work tomorrow.

For the ladies in the group,  I wear the SIDI T2 tri shoe.  LOVE IT!!!!!    They do make them for men as well.  Extremely light and carbon bottoms so very stiff.  Easy in and out of and suppose to be comfortable without socks - but I don't do that.

And Tony, thanks for the link to the TT.  I'll be out of town that weekend but I forwarded it on to my riding buddies.  Some time I'll have to be brave enough to try something like that.  My husband is drooling at the bit to try one so I'll keep checking out that web site.  Thanks.

Tomorrow the hubby and I are doing an OWS then 45 miles on the bike with some friends.  It has been pouring cats and dogs around here for the last few days so the lake should be very yucky!!!   Not that this lake isn't anyway, but even more so now.  And definitely no tri shorts for me!   The group can all wait for me while I change into my true riding shorts.  Some padding will be a nice change after last weekend!
