When I did a coached swim with my tri team last year I was told to pretend I was reaching for a book on the highest shelf.....and also imagine a stick running right through your body from head to toe, and try and keep that stick straight.  It's a little hard not to over think it, but when you get it down it all makes sense.

Morning all!  All the swim tips are great!  Yesterday I would say over the course of my 50 minute swim I was 85% bilateral breathing every third stroke (which did feel more efficient by the way!) with occassional slips back into right side every stroke breathing when I would start to think I was running out of air.  I'm going to work on the mantra to just swim through that.  I think I get in my head a little too much and rest before I need to.  Great tips guys! Thanks!

Nice discussion on swimming.

I learned to breath on either side 30 years ago.  I figured if I was teaching kids, I should be able to demonstrate it the way they'd be trying.

Learning to breath on the "off" side gives you a chance to slow down and focus on what SHOULD be happening.  Once I started breathing to the right, my left-side breathing also improved.  It feels a bit unnatural at first.  I would typically breath every 4th stroke, so down on the left, back on the right.  In the last 2 years, I've gone more "bilateral" breathing, particularly as I do hard intervals.

Bilateral does help balance your stroke (important when you lack the visual/tactile cues of a black line and lane lines) and gives you flexibility to breath towards the bouys (whichever way), towards another swimmer (or crowd), or away from another swimmer, away from waves, or away from sun.

"Off-season" (i.e. now) is a good time to work on skills like this.  Before you're neck-deep in swim workouts and trying to hit some race-pace goals.

Nice article. I like the deposit/withdrawal metaphor.  Thinking positive thoughts before I go to sleep helps me relax, fall asleep easier.  Also, improving my posture when I began training for Tris a couple of years ago changed my personality! It made me feel happier to stand tall, learn to get my shoulders back, chest up, etc... It felt so unnatural and awkward at first...

Getting back to the discussion about breathing patterns while swimming, here is a link to Gary Hall, Sr.'s tip to breathing patterns.  He is not a fan of breathing every 3d stroke since you don't get enough oxygen with that type of pattern.  I have not mastered the pattern he proposes, but am working on it.

So I took a look at my schedule this morning.  My coach had layed out a swim for me today, it said 4x500 pull with paddles.  I don't have a set of paddles so I just thought... "no big deal, I can pull without paddles"....  What a dumb idea that was.  Did 2000 yds of pulling bare hands...  Needless to say, I just ordered a set of paddlles

A sad day for athletes around the world yesterday.  I don't have a lot of modern day heros, but I have to say the Jack LaLanne will go down in my book as the most powerful and influential swimmer of all time.  He was truely an American Icon, and the fitness world is worse off without him.

Thanks for sharing that!  I think the breathing looks really hard to adapt to and would take a long time to feel comfortable with it but I did also learn to drop my head to create less drag!  That was not covered in my stoke lesson the other day and could maybe make a big difference.

That is all wonderful information on swimming.  In discussing the breathing aspect with my wife last night, she suggested I practice breathing "bilaterally" so increase my stroke efficiency.  This coming from an All-American and easy for her to say.  I told I did.  I breath to the right on the way down, and to the left on the way back.  She laughed hystarically, as she said, "The same ear goes in the water everytime you do that!  No wonder you always see the same people in the lane next to you!"

Needless to say, I still need more practice.

I think I have narrowed down my bike search, and would like some assistance please.  Below are the links to the bikes that I am interested in.

I know they are not name brand bikes, but someone just starting out I do not want to spend upwards of $500-$1000.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

I think that they are all good bikes, I got mine last year at same place, I got the Wellington3.
They are good machines for the price we pay.

I'm confused...(not unusual)...let's assume you're standing at the end of the pool and the clock is to your left.  As you swim to the other end of the pool, you see the clock when you breathe (to the left).  Then when you turn to swim back, do you still look to the side with the clock (now the right)?

Nothing wrong with any of them, but don't expect a "warm" welcome taking it to the local bike shop for assembly or service.

In reference to my swimming incidents...When I breath, I was put my right ear down in the water during my lengths in the pool.  Therefore, even though I believe I am breathing from both directions, I never put my left ear in the water when I take a breath.  I always turn and put my right ear in the water.  Hence the confusion.  I think just because I was looking at something different in the pool, I am not bilaterally breathing, I am always putting my right ear in the water and looking to my left when I take a breath.

Thank you for the advice on the bikes.  There is an option of having the factory assemble the bikes before shipping.  Would it be very difficult putting all the pieces together?

Congrats on the weight loss!  I'm holding out to weigh in until Jan. 30--but something is definitely going on with my body...clothes are fitting looser and looser.  Lovin' it!

Ok...I'm less confused now...(you're breathing to the left)

Assembly isn't too bad if you have at least a little bit of mechanical aptitude.  Adjusting deraileurs is more complicated and very easy to get hopelessly misadjusted.  (A mechanic can usually sort it out in 10-15 minutes no matter how badly you've set it as long as nothing is damaged.

Go to the bike shop and ask what they'd charge to assemble a bike for you.  You'll either get a "go away" (now what are you going to do with the hunk of mail-order aluminum, rubber, and steel?) or they'll quote you a price and you'll know before you buy online what your total cost will be.
