sdalessio - 2011-04-28 3:09 PM Good luck to all racers this weekend!  There is a huge crowd and I too lost track!!!  Can't wait to read the race reports.  :-)

Suzy won't like it but I probably won't have my RR done in 24 hours...unless they have internet on the 14.5 hour plane ride to China.

This is an article in Bicycling magazine about taking 2 over-the-counter pain relievers to help build strenth (study included ages 60-78).  I am curious what everyone thinks? I don't like to take ANYTHING if possible.

http://www.bicycling.com/training-nutrition/training-fitness/cycling-training-tips-over-counter-strength?cm_mmc=BicyclingNL-_-04282011-_-trainingandnutrition-_-cycling_training_tips_over_the_counter_strength

Linda, I don't like to take anything either.  I am not 100% sure of the exact process, but I think there is a healing process that our muscles need to go through naturally, that is somehow inhibited by taking anti-inflammatories.   dang, and i am was a physiology major in college!  i should go research this and get back to you, but lunch is calling my name!

Great # John and very cool that it's now REALLY official.  :-)

All of the this snake, alligator talk gets me even more freaked out about the water.  Although I am better w/ safety in numbers.  And one more thing about the freaked out people for IM Texas - It goes back to what I wrote that you have to be  smart and confident in your abilities.  They never should have signed up for that race knowing or not knowing what water temps could do in Texas at that time of year.  If you need a wetsuit for 2.4m then swim in a butt cold lake!

And speaking of snakes, Great Falls Park is loaded w/ copperheads.  I've lived in VA all of my life and seen them, avoided them and basically no big deal.  Well there are warning in the park about them and my 50k has about 10m in and around the park.  Didn't really think about it til I read some reports from last years race.  The week of the race 2 people were bitten in the park and one runner saw one during the race and had to jump over it in mid-stride.  Hummmm - I might have to rethink this trail running thing.

Come to Wisconsin....we have ultras galore and it's so dang cold here all the time snakes couldn't possibly survive! Snow flakes greeted me this morning....this is bordering on ridiculous.

Wow, snow!

We had tornados here this morning, the worst since 1974, things are still running as normal though.

I'd love to do an ultra in WI. Western MD is too full of rollers and mountains and snakes ; )

Well, well.  Look who went terpless today!!

Linda....Kim is right.  You don't want to start taking NSAIDs because a certain amount of inflammation helps the healing process.  For acute injuries like a sprain, take it for 24 hours to reduce swelling and that's it......when I do prolotherapy, I can't take NSAIDs for a month....all in the name of keeping the inflammation to heal the muscle or tendon....my two cents.

It's not a race per se, but an event....the Quadrupedal--for me it's 55m of beastly hills all in the name of a better IM bike time.  Following it up with a 30 minute run....doing it all alone 35F temps at the start with a bonus of 50F if it takes me all day....BRRRRRRRR.

Linda!  I cannot see the elevation map...but I know you are going to do great this weekend.  You are a champion!  A big time machine on hills!  Eat those hills like candy pop tarts!  We will be cheering you on.  It will be a transcendant moment when you reach the top and fly down the other side.  I hope they still have the classical pianist even with the course change.

Terps421 - 2011-04-28 5:01 PM Suzy, I am curious, what is prolotherapy?

As far as I can tell from watching YouTube videos, here's what happens.  The doctor first apologizes.  Then he gently and tenderly stabs you repeatedly with a very sharp, very long needle, after which some fairies come along, sprinkle you with magic dust, and you're healed!  Actually, that last part may or may not be accurate since I stopped watching once that doctor started with the needle...

Suzy, was I close?

Hey all:

I swam my longest swim of my life today 3700 yds. or 2.1 miles. I was cramping at the end. I think I was dehydrated by then. I have 3000+ tomorrow and will bring a water bottle. So far this year I have increased my swim, bike and run numbers month-to-month. With my bike tonight and tomorrows swim I will continue the trend. Saturday is a run and some strength to close out the month.

How anyone does an Ironman is beyond me. Good luck this weekend racers!

I have heard mixed reviews of Prolotherapy.  The moderator of the Injuries forum here on BT is not a big fan of it.  He is in the John camp I think about not enough peer reviewed studies on it's effectiveness type of thing.

Our massage therapist guy actually just had it done on a problem he had I think in his foot.  He tried all kinds of stuff first but in the end tried the Prolotherapy and it worked for him.  He said it didn't hurt at all, and when I asked him how it worked, he described to me pretty much word for word what I grabbed off prolotherapy.com.

"Prolotherapy uses a dextrose (sugar water) solution, which is injected into the ligament or tendon where it attaches to the bone. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients and stimulates the tissue to repair itself. "

I was actually surprised he went this way based on what I had heard previously about it and I believe him to be a very knowledgeble person about stuff like that as he has fixed many aches/pains/percieved damage etc on us, purely through massage, and perscribed stretching routines.

So there are my 2 second hand observations

Very nice Doug.  LOL, Swimming 4000M in a pool for practice is one of the things that would keep me from doing an IM distance race.  I think I would go (more) insane with boredom.

So we have it all in one place.

Andre - Bassman Sprint Tri
George - St. Luke's Half Marathon
DJ - IronGirl Sprint Tri
Linda (Velcro) - Big Sur Marathon
Tony - Bunny Hop Criterium (sounds menacing doesn't it)
Suzy - Cold a$$ bike and run.

What are all of your goals for these races?

Mine for this weekend.

Primary goal: (always the same): Keep my bike and myself upright for the race.

Secondary goal:

Based on last race success I realized that my Weekly long group and group hill rides are much harder than the actual races.  Before my goal would have been for a pack finish, but now it's to get myself in the top 10 or so riders coming into the last turn (200M before the finish) so I can set myself up for the sprint and maybe podium.

4K in the pool is no different than intervals on the bike. Or a moderate run (or a longer run). My workouts this week (pick your own intervals):

400s/400k/200p (breathe 3-5-7-9 by 50)
3x(500 moderate on an interval that allows about :30 rest, 5x100 on a tough interval -- less than :10 rest
100w/d

^^^ That one is 4100.

500 swim
500 kick w/fins
300 pull breathe 3-5-7-7-5-3 by 50
Ladder as:
100 mod
4x50, descend 1-4
300 mod
4x100, descend 1-4
500 hard
4x100, descend 1-4
300 mod
4x50 descend 1-4
100 mod
200 w/d
^^^ That one is 4K. Choose an interval per 50 or 100 and hold it for the entire set. You'll end up with the most rest on the 500, and the least rest on the 50's.

I'm waiting for pics of Suzy's hot black dress. And John's hot purple shorts.

All of the Big Sur information says to plan on adding 20-30 minutes to your PR as a goal time - the hills are that intense.  I think I'm in better shape that I've been for any of the others, so I've discounted that.  HA!  3:59 is my PR.....I'd really like to beat that and have a better shot of getting IN to Boston for 2012.  In the category of bordering on the ridiculous, I've signed up for a 3:50 pace group.  I may die, or I may be really, really happy!

Cheering for all of the other MG racers-let's rock this weekend.

Uhm, sorta.....a doctor does use a needle--not long and very thin, depending on the issue he will inject STAB you anywhere from a few times to 30+ where the muscle/tendon attaches to bone;sometimes all the way down the muscle/tendon. Typically you will need 2-4 rounds spaced, 3-4 weeks apart for complete healing.   THe basic premise is the injected glucose solution insites inflammation which then speeds healing and strengthens the weak area.  Here is a decent overview.  There are plenty of nay-sayers (like MDs, John and maybe RP), but I have had tremendous success with it for PF, a torn adductor and other side issues caused from compensation during a primary injury.  SOme say the time is what healed the injury, but in each case I was able to train through it, including both Boston's...so there!

Sorry peeps, no black dress photos....we were running late last night and then got wrapped up in the evening.  It wouldn't have rivaled John's itty bitty purple shorts anyway
