Interesting thread on walking over in TT.  Get your typical responses, either train more/harder so you don't have to walk to walking is fine.  I am in the latter camp, although I endevour to run as much of it as I can

While I never train a run/walk, I have walked every long course I've done.  Probably overcooking it on the bike/bad pacing.  Maybe I should train run/walk.  I've done half marathons where run/walkers have beaten me.  Of course, even in my "run" portion I wouldn't be running that fast.

Being forced to walk in a race is different than planning to walk in a race, IMO, though.  For me, every time I walk, it gets harder and harder to start running again, so I put it off as long as possible.  Maybe embracing it sooner would be better....

Thoughts here?  Is it OK for you to enter a race knowing you are going to walk?  Do you plan to walk?

I certainly don't think anyone needs permission to walk, whether that's their plan or not their plan. Triathlon can be many different things to many different people.

Completely agree.  Not everyone is gunning for a podium or to make sure they beat the person 50 feet in front of them.  Regardless, do whatever makes you happy at the end of the day.

I started running with a local group that uses 10' running, 1' walking pretty religiously and as a beginner runner it was awesome. It took a while to see how that could really work in a race. My first 10k i decided i had to run the whole thing in order to be successful and despite consistent training it was still a slog.  Just a few weeks later I did a 10k with a friend and used the 10 and 1's and i finished in the same time.

I have used walk breaks and the big benefits is breaking up a big run into manageable chunks.   I trained and raced my first half marathons and marathon that way and finished pretty respectably and well within my ability at the time.  It certainly doesn't diminish my accomplishment in my own mind.

Eventually i've phased them out and don't do them any more but coming off my sprained ankle in the fall I used them again as it was essential for managing my efforts and not doing too much too soon.

I think people need to do what works for them - because running so hard that you have to walk is very different than setting out a run/walk or a full walk strategy for a race - which in the end is about executing your race strategy.

Ok for who? For me, I'd rather not. But, I have ended up walking a bit in my first sprint, a really hot Oly, and a few steps at aid stations when I didn't want to pour gatorade right up my nose.

For the OP of that thread? Dude's a big guy. If he felt he HAD to run, he might not do it. I'd rather see him (or anyone else) doing an effective run/walk ratio than not doing the event.

Jan numbers are down a bit from Dec.    A bit of vacation and sickness to blame though.  Still a fairly solid month, except for the swimming, but that was due to the pool being closed for half the month

January's totals:
Bike:16h 44m 11s  - 255.02 Mi
Run:15h 24m 31s  - 81.99 Mi
Swim:

7h 16m 28s  - 17653.84 Yd

Great job on the totals. Sometimes the forces that be don't line up and allow us what we want. great job rolling with it.

January's totals:
Bike:11h 54m 55s  - 239.3 Mi
Run:16h 30m  - 105.03 Mi
Swim:2h 07m 26s  - 7900 M

As you can probably tell, swimming is on a bit of a back burner at the moment, but it's probably time to reintroduce my 3rd swim per week.

Other than that I'm pretty happy with my numbers.

I walk when I train and I walk when I race. It makes no sense to me to run through water stations while splashing what little water I get all over my shoes. If it is under a 10k I usually will not walk more than once or twice because that is all I need for water stops. In longer distances I will walk through every aid station. In IM this is about every mile. For this reason I walk in training at about a 10/1 ratio. It really is something you need to train for. I find walking tears my body up in different ways than running does. I want my body to be ready to handle the different rigors of a 14 minute mile while walking. Because I do plan to do some walking I at least want it to be fast walking.

Nice job on be January totals. I like to swim less stress on my body. I actually feel more tired per hour swim verses the other to disciplines. I feel pretty balanced in all 3 but endurance running is my weakest. I actually think I would swim a lot more if I could get away with it.

Interesting point on the swim.  I know that MOA uses a lot of swim volume as not just a way to improve your swim but as a way to improve your endurance fitness.  I am swimming a lot more then I ever have (and it is still not that much).  Longer sessions then the BT plan generally give you.  I was thinking this might actually be playing into my weight loss.  I know I leave the pool pretty darn hungry and feel like I worked harder then I would for the same length of a run.  And not just cause I suck in the pool, cause I suck pretty bad at the run as well.

January's totals:
Bike:1h 56m  - 15 Mi
Run:18h 39m 55s  - 109.1 Mi
Hashing:1h 00m
Yoga:1h 00m
Guess that is what marathon training, taper and racing look like in the final month. I missed my bike and the pool very much in January - and December, too!

Don't fret none, your totals were purposeful. You can always tell the swimmers they don't swim.

I just realized I did bike intervals one day and run intervals the day before.  Anyone ever put two workouts like that back to back?  I normally wouldn't but you know how life forces you to rearrange.  Today my run felt a little off and I blamed it on the clouds, but maybe it was the intervals?  Although I felt like I recovered fairly well from those workouts.  At least it seemed like it.

TSimone - 2012-01-31 4:11 PM

Wow, I missed a lot today.  Had to go get my sick kid at school and celebrating my wife's birthday this evening so my workout plans changed.  I'll get in something, though.  My Jan totals are my highest total volume in the short time I've been doing this.  What I'm most happy with is I have no feeling that this is too much for me.

January's totals:
Bike:17h 15m 29s  - 249.27 Mi
Run:10h 32m 57s  - 63.83 Mi
Swim:4h 48m 04s  - 11460 M
Strength:20m

I'm totally indifferent about folks entering a race knowing they will walk.  Whatever makes 'em happy.  I did plan to walk the aid stations in my HIM and marathon.  Had I not planned on that, I would have been forced to anyway.

Rudy's right-GREAT GROUP!  I'm fortunate to be part of it.  And yes, my weight does seem to fluctuate and I hold more fluids after higher intensity stuff.  All things equal, I can float 2 pounds overnight.  James-I'm praying you have some good news on the follow up tests.  Stay strong!

Apparently I'm missing big happy fun time in TT.  Heading there with a bag of popcorn now.

Congratulations on your high totals. I hope your child is better. Thanks you for your prayers. This group is active today. I wish I had something a little better than my phone to post with.

Goals for February would be to get myself swimming again, start riding 3 times a week, and 80 miles of running.

Run: 20h 06m 56s - 148.59 Mi

Run: 4h 18m 14s - 28.46 Mi

My goal for Feb is to beat Bryan's training volume.  Ha, I'd have to sbr all day long.  I want to hit all my workouts in my training plan as well as continue the downward trend in my weight as I get closer to race day.  I still expect to potentially miss a workout or two but if I can hit the majority of them, or at least start them I'll be happy
