Thanks for the advice.  You guys make a great sounding board.

Boiling it down - missing a ride or adjusting a bit probably will not hurt the overall plan.  This is a race I really like, and no, I'm afraid I cannot do it easy.  That's part of the fun of it.  For me, this is one of my benchmark races.

Think I'll go shorter and easier on the ride Saturday, then race on Sunday.

Thanks for your thoughts, they helped me see some alternatives.

Hey gang, The oil well is capped and while there will still be issues for a long time, it's actually starting to look like we will all get to swim in the ocean in November.  Thoughts?

for A races, I adjust my plan..for B or C races, I use them as a high quality training day....do what you feel like, don't think at this point it will make or break your IM   And, let us know how you do!!

No, there isn't an Oly around here to do, so no race for me.  My August is busy with kids soccer and volleyball and my son has an out of town tournament the weekend of the 21-22, so I will probably switch some things around to make that an easy weekend (i.e. Oly distance training).

And I'm out...Cry
Just got in touch with the boss at my new job and I've already been setup with an overseas trip that will occur during IMFL.  Looks like I'll be trying to get bumped to 2011...at least there is more time to train now Frown

I'm out too due to military training. However, I got approval from my command to travel to Mexico and just got in to IMCoz, so not all is lost! This will be a nice EOD School graduation treat!  (I graduate the week before).

Now, to find a pretty lady to come with

I hate to break the news to you but that isn't going to happen.  No transfer or deferral policy.  You will have to withdraw, get your $150 and attempt to register next year.

Please let us know how you did it if you can get them to defer your registration until next year. :-)

I have heard all kinds of stories of people having deaths in the family, being diagnosed with cancer, etc. and WTC would not defer their registration or refund their money.  I doubt "I have to work" is going to sway them.

I haven't seen anything lately on shirts or hats.  I did them the last 2 years so I thought I'd let someone else handle them if they wanted to.  If no one else wants to I can do them again.  This was an idea I had for the front.  It's a little rough cause I did it with Microsoft paint.

I like it as well.

We discussed it before but I like first year type of shirts best.

Are we going to do two sided printing? Have a supporter shirt different than racer shirt like in past years?

We can do Headsweat hats if we order them by Sept 1st. I can help with that but I suck at designing them. I got a quote a couple months ago and the price is less than $20 but will depend on quantity.

I would be in for the hat as well.  I have problems with hats as I have a small head, but we got headsweat hats with my half IM in June and it fits fine.  I request a light colour.  I only have dark hats which aren't good for the summer.

Love the design as well, but I have to say I'm in favor of shirts.  I'm not much of a hat person.  I'll get one if we have them, but I'd like a shirt as well.  I know no one ever found hot pink ones...... what about lime green or something like that?

Really liking the design too. I'd be in for a shirt and a hat. I prefer the shirt as it will get more use but the hat will keep the rain off my head!!

I'd prefer a shirt over a hat, but would buy either if it was the only thing available.

Hey all!
Haven't been on for a while.  Sorry to hear that Mikerunkle and Thegomer won't be joinging us.  I can't imagine having to refocus my attention to another race at this point, but kudos to you both for seeming to take it in stride.

I'm all for the hat (a vote for light colored too) or a t-shirt.  Im pretty easy.

Quick question/ advice....I did a long brick this past weekend (2 mile swim, 50 mile bike, and a 6 mile run).  Swim and bike were awesome but about the last 5 miles of the bike and the entire run, the naseau had set in.  My legs felt good and I wasn't lacking energy per se just felt like i wanted to throw up.  Im guessing nutrition issues.  I've been using Infinit nutrition, about 1 200 kcal bottle per hour plus a sleeve of 200 kcal Cliff Shot bloks.  By the end of the bike I just wanted water, everthing was getting too sweet for me.  Is there such thing as too many calories?  If I dilute my nutrition then Im not getting enough calories.  I think I was nervous about bonking so I ate and drank as much as I could handle while still trying to be regimented about it.  All in all I was happy with the day as I know now my muscles are ready for my HIM in Sept if I can just figured out how to feed them with out off my stomach.

Off to Illinois to visit friends today and get in some nice long flat FL style riding.

Take care

Justin

There is definitely such a thing as too many calories and I learned a very hard lesson about that once.  The "general" rule of thumb is 150 to 300 calories per hour on the bike for most people (size usually a factor there).  Some people can handle more, some less. Remember that your digestive system is going to be slowed down tremendously while in that hyper state of exertion.  Your respiratory and muscular systems are getting the lion's share of the blood flow. Everything you eat and drink is going to process much more slowly than if you were in a normal relaxed state.  As exertion goes up, absorption goes down.

I took in over 500 cals per hour on the bike during a 70.3 earlier this year and I paid dearly for it.  My body just couldn't digest the amount of calories I took in and it just sat there like a brick in my tummy. I started to feel like crap about 4 miles into the run.  The vomiting started mile 9.  I probably threw up 15 or 20 times on the course.  I then couldn't drink anything and became extremely dehydrated.  I ended up walking about 5 miles of the 13.1.  I had to get two IV bags at the med tent but the real issue was the horrible stomach cramps.  I had to go to the hospital because I was hurting.  I probably threw up another 20 to 30 times in the ambulance and hospital.  Over the course of the next 8+ hours I was given four more IV bags plus some concoction to stop the cramping.  All because I took in more calories than I should.

You were doing 400 cals/hour If I'm reading things correctly.  That's probably way too much.  Pictures can be deceiving but you look like a very slim guy.  Try just using the 200 cals of Infinit per hour and see how it works.  Raise the intake a bit if you bonk a little.  I'm 6'0" and 172 lbs. and I go with about 250 to 275 cals per hour on the bike right now.

Planning ahead for 2011 and IMFl is on the list.  Anyone know how long general entry was open on the web(minutes?) or is the best way to get in by volunteering?

Thanks for your time
