One week to go and the pre race crazies are starting to get to me. My rear tire has about 1,000 miles on it and I have been debating weather I should change it or not. Before yesterday's last long ride I looked it over really well and decided I would not change it. Yesterday was last long ride so I needed to make the decision then because of not wanting to go into race with an untested tire. Sure enough, I get a flat. Fix it and after I get home I'm going back and forth on weather to change or not, seriously driving myself a little crazy. I checked the tube over and realized it was a pinch flat, which really is hard to believe since I inflate to 120 psi. Decide to stick with tire. As I'm looking tire over much closer last night I see the tube is bulging out of the sidewall. At some point yesterday I must have got a small little cut in the tire. So, back to changing out the tire today. Now I have to be satisfied that three very short rides will be enough to test out new tire and make sure it is good. Sorry to all those who read through this long, boring diatribe. What can I say? For the first time in 6 months I have no scheduled workout on a Sunday and I'm not sure what to do with myself.

Go change buy some new tires. One for the front and one for the back. Then you will have 2 brand new tires to take you through the hills of IMWI. Smile

I have a 6 mile run. The weather is beautiful, Chris is out on his bike, and I'm trying to get motivated. It's hard work to get me motivated to run, you know.

I'm going on brand new tires and tubes, might put 20 miles on them before Moo Moo.

Nothing new on race day, right?

My response, yeah right, whatever.

Yep, last minute jitters are driving me crazy. I went out on a short ride this morning to check out out my Tri-club's loaner wheels. I've had perfect shifting all year. I had the bike checked yesterday, with the loaner wheels, and everything went great. Get out on the ride and the shifting is screwed up. Bike shop is closed today and tomorrow and I'm leaving early on Tuesday. I'm pretty sure I can tweak it myself but I'd rather have a pro take care of it before the IM. Guess I'll get it checked out again when I get to Madison. Got to have something go wrong to make this fun.

I rented the MyAthlete GPS tracker thingy for the race for one day and just got notification that it shipped out and that it will arrive in 1-3 days.  So, to respond to earlier posts, it looks like the company survived the hurricane and the little blip on the screen will work.

All the best to all of you and if you see an old guy on a white specialized that you pass, say hello.  Right whizzzzz?  By the way, I bought my secrete weapon for the one luxury on the race today special, and it is a PAYDAY candy bar.  This is nirvana when you are out there so long.  Salty, crunchy, and paradise in the mouth.

Just got the same e-mail. Glad to see they're back up and functioning. Wow, I can't believe race weekend is almost here. Where did the last 6 months go???

Just for the crazy folks:

I went for a short ride and snapped my front derailer cable.

I have spent hours agonizing over that front cable.  It looks fine, so I should just leave it alone, but you know, I could put a new one on there.  I even have a cable, but I really don't want to ride with a new cable.  What if it has some stretch between now and race day?  What if it's defective?

Better today than next Sunday. I ended up replacing both tires and both tubes for a little piece of mind. I figure I have about 50 more miles of riding to discover defects.

Fred, Bryan, Whizzzzz, Dumpster, Lazymarathoner - you're more than welcome (click on the link) to stop in but need to add yourself to the list if you think that you will attend on Sat., otherwise, I don't blame you for getting to bed by 7:00 p.m.

Thanks Fill-up, but I think Chris and I are going to do a small, early, dinner someplace away from town with some of the peeps we ride with. We will see all you monkeys donkeys at the athlete dinner on Friday!! (Although you won't be there, will you Fill?) ...

No, I won't, but I wish I could.

That happened to my rear deraileur cable 3 weeks ago on a 120 mile ride...luckily, i was looping back to the car right at 80 miles, couldn't fix it out there and couldn't shift easily to the small ring, so stuck the darn bike in the car and drove home, finished the last 40 miles on the crazy Computrainer.  had the cable replaced the next day.

Shifting was fine subsequently...still a week to make sure it's okay?  I have a new chain since then, too, and was worried about it being loose or too tight...but it's been fine.  Just curious, and only because I am not very bike savvy, but how can one ride with a snapped cable?

My rear deraileur cable snapped a couple of months ago on a long hilly ride.  The chain moves to the smallest (heaviest) gear and gets stuck there.  (At least that's what happened to me, every time I manually moved it to another gear it went right back to that small one.)  I could still ride, I just didn't have any options in the back.  I used the small chain ring in front on the hills, and big chain ring on the downhills, until we made it to a bike shop to get repaired.  Not ideal, but definitely you can ride.

Thanks Phil! I'm also doing the low key Saturday dinner with my family. It's the only quiet time I get with them all weekend to say thanks for being out there from pre-sunrise to sunset for me. But I'll see everyone thurs or fri. No early morning swims for me though, my taper is so short I want every bit of rest I can get!

Considering the forecast outlook to be around mid to upper '70's, I suspect a much cooler evening starting around 6:00 p.m.

I would suggest a light, breathable wic-type long sleeve, jacket, or arm warmers, and a pair of light gloves in your Special Needs run bag, since it gets a little cool when you hit down by the UW Hospital/Observatory Hill/UW Campus/Lakefront Path area.  I don't suspect rain, but am keeping an eye out for that.

Do

What Karen said, but it's the opposite for the front derailer.  The spring keeps it in the small ring.

I rode 5 miles home after mine broke, but IIRC Karen rode to the bike shop, got it fixed, and then finished her ride.

She is tougher than me.
