It was the first time I've run by myself in awhile and I really pushed myself. I ran 3.41 miles at 8:49 pace. There were a few times where I was like, wow I must be running slow. Then I looked at my watch and I was running the fastest since last year. Definitely a good feeling, especially after being sick (and still am not 100%). It helped that it was 70 degrees out...my perfect running weather. My hip has been bothering me since the run though. I think I need to do some strengthening exercises for my hip. Anyone have any good ones? I am going to run again tomorrow morning or evening, and maybe hit up my gym in the evening too. I'm going to try to get a good swim in Saturday morning before my lessons, and then maybe get a run in when I am at my parents' house for Easter on Sunday. It's time to get serious about training! Nice run, Nicole. Just curious, what's your 5K or 10K race pace? Just wondering where that 8:49 mile fits in. As for hip problems, I do a series of hip flexor work that I learned in Pilates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt3gF3UAJ_E Trust me, I don't look like that doing it. |

My duathlon went well on Sunday. Broke into the top half of my age group for the first time and really had quick transitions. Ran really hard on both runs and pushed myself. Since then I started week 7 of my plan which begins the build phase. Tuesday swim that included 6x75 lactate intervals. Wednesday a ride that had 3x long hill climbs on the bike. And this morning a 34 minute run with 14x30 seconds lactate intervals. That was pretty hellish! Like I scolded John, race report or it didn't happen. <edited for typos> Edited by jmhpsu93 2016-03-24 1:19 PM |

Yes! they are indestructible thus far, for me, btw. I wore my USA1s for the HM on Sunday. Dropped them on the ground 3 times because I kept putting them on my forehead then leaning back or knocking them off. I've destroyed so many sunglasses that way... I thought these were done, they had what looked like scratches all over one lens from hitting the concrete. Was going to try and polish them out but I wiped them with a lens cloth and they cleaned right up...good as new. Also for anyone else interested, they're running another promo - 55% off. BEACH |

The back is not good - constant discomfort. On the good side, my PT had a spot open today so he worked on it a bit and gave me a bunch of stuff to do. He recommended not swimming today and if I bike, only easily and not in aero. I laughed - I can't even get on my bike much less clip in right now. I hate it when my back goes - sometimes it's for a couple of days, sometimes a couple of weeks. I'm trying to say it's good that it's early on in training...but this is when the base is built. Argh. We travel this weekend for Easter so I was hoping to get my workouts in and only have to run on Sunday while away; bike Saturday super early before we leave.. Not I will play it by ear and listen to the body like a good patient. Why do they use the word patient when the last thing you have is patience? hahahha |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question for the Gallowayers. My knee has been starting to ache when I get over a few miles on runs (the big downside to being so inconsistent), and I'm going to give it a try. When you race, do you still do the run/walk? And if so, how do keep track of how long to do each? Training I can set a timer on my phone, but that's not going to fly in a race. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Been inconsistent about getting to my scheduled runs the last 2 weeks on time, and end up pushing everything to the end of week. Hoping this doesn't bite me in the and cause some preventable overuse injury. 6.2 recovery run today, 4.6 mile interval run tomorrow, followed by 11.6 mile long run Sunday. I was supposed to hit these Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, but a combo of everything causes me to procrastinate till the end of week. I hate this about myself and need to be more disciplined moving forward. |

And if so, how do keep track of how long to do each? Training I can set a timer on my phone, but that's not going to fly in a race. So far all my races - Half Marathon included - I've run end to end. You can certainly run/walk the race. I've used a few different methods for the timing. For 5k training I used the galloway app (it was like $3). For 10k and HM training I followed the plan in the book (a light version of the plan is available free from RunDisney if you want it) and set my Polar up based on the training plan. So if I'm supposed to be doing 5 min run/1 min walk, I just program that in along with high/low threshold paces. And now that I've 'graduated' from my first HM, I've taken a little more relaxed approach for my maintenance runs. I use MapMyRun and at the end of each mile, I walk 30 seconds. I just count seconds in my head and then run again. |

For longer than 5ks I do it and you can either go off the mileage signs they put out or if you roughly know your pace then you can do it off your watch. For me, I run the first mile, then walk a minute. It takes me roughly 0.07 to walk a minute (I have distance on my watch) so then I'll run to 2.07 then walk a minute to 2.14 then run to 3.14, etc. I base it off of multiples of 0.07 because that's my walking pace for a minute. Others just simply do it on the mile which requires no math. Sometimes depending on where the water stops are I will walk the water stops and that's it. Some people have timers on their watch and can set them up to go off at certain distances or at certain times. I do distance, but a number of my friends do the "run for 3 minutes, walk for a minute" thing or run for 10 minutes, walk for a minute and they have their watch set up to do that. There are really a lot of options and you just have to figure out what works for you - the key is to walk just slow enough to allow your body time to recover - don't wait until you're fatigued - that's when you change your gait and injury occurs. I have been able to significantly up my distance without injury this year, and last year I ended up running faster than if I just straight ran the race. Crazy, I know. I used to think it was "not racing" until I had to do it and have now seen the benefits. I have Galloway's Half Marathon book and it gives you break-downs as to where time-wise you want to finish your HM and what lengths of breaks to use. I usually do a HM between 1:45-2:00 so it's recommended to do the run a mile, walk a minute thing. That's where I get my numbers and still do it now. For 10k's I might only walk for 30 seconds. Hope this helps. Hit a bookstore and read some of Galloways suggestions. Edited by aviatrix802 2016-03-25 10:56 AM |

No swimming allowed, no running and if I can get on the bike then only light biking and not in aero. Many swear words flow through my head but I will busy myself with modifying my plan and doing PT. Positive vibes, positive vibes. Oh! Core work, people, core work!! This probably could have been prevented!! |

Sounds like you're handling it OK, for now anyways. When I originally messed mine up walking really helped, so hopefully that will work for you. |

In college my race pace was much faster ![]() I also haven't run a 10K recently...or maybe ever! My shins don't love distances (I've had a few stress fractures) so I try not to go up too high in my mileage, although I'm hoping to change that this year. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went for my first swim of the year! My PT didn't necessarily clear me for it but she did OK me for upping my activity levels. For the most part my shoulder and arm behaved, we'll see how happy it is later today. I kept it conservative and only did 500m, have to restart somewhere! Still keeping my running consistent and have added in a couple miles of biking to/from work. |
