I was just on the IronmanFlorida site and noticed they added a little Graphic countdown thing below the athletes guide link. It has a countdown, the weather, and an inspirational video. There is a link that show's flavors on the course for Powerbar products. I am not sure if it is accurate but that would definitely help me plan on what I need to take with me on the course. In addition, they just added the Wisconsin 2010 participant link. Looks like there busy on the web today. I know some of you don't get the whole "bib number excitement" thing. However for those that do I wanted to let you know of the activity.

Taper Tuesday. I like the way that sounds!

Does anyone else feel like they need a day off from work to get organized?

heh...Actually if you choose to do a second one its MUCH easier the second time aropund.  WOn't look like abomb wentoff in your house.  I htink most of IM training is teaching your body to handle fatigue.

And I am just sharing because i know you all will understand....My neck hurts, I have a raging headache and I am sneezing and I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT ANY OF IT.

Looks like someone is whipping out the classics on youtube today.

Indeed... It's really cold now in Belgium and putting all this video on Ipod to have a look during public transport is so hot...

What??? How can this thread be 7th on the list? No posts in almost 2 hrs?? Crazy! Anyway, just wanted to share that I swam like a rock today. As close to swimming in reverse as possible. Hope this clears itself up by raceday!!! I think my swimming was tons better like 3 months ago but I've slacked off a bit and now getting worried. Gotta love a nice  boyant wetsuit - I won't however, get DQ'ed for using zoomers like the guy in '07!

Happy training, stay healthy

Crap...Sorry!  I try to make sure I am posting on the hour to keep the thread up.  Man I am falling down on the job.   Don't worry about the swim, you can't be doing any worse then me.  I have not gone for a swim in week and I am not sure if I will get any more in before I head down to Florida.  My swim times seem to remain relatively consistent and it has been in the 30's in the mornings here.  Since all my swimming is outdoors it is really hard to get motivated for a swim in those temps.  I have also slacked off on my bike a little more then I should.  Hopefully my running volume will get me through till race day.

The shirts look great! Can't wait to get mine!

I am freaking out because everyone is sick that i work with and its making me totally paranoid!

I need some pointers on kicking from you swimmers. I feel like my kick is 1) non existent and 2) actually conterproductive. If i try to kick with a kickboard I do nowhere so I always you fins for kicking sets. I saw this girl lying on her back with her arms stretched over her head today at the pool and she was just motoring along. I was jealous! How can I improve my kick?? Any drills that would help?

That's how I do my kicksets - with fins on. It's totally relaxing for me and I focus on keeping my shoulders down, head as close to the opposite wall as possible(it helps to stretch me out) and hips up.  Dunno if Im in any shape to make recommendations tho! Salt water + wetsuit = added confidence

If I kick w/out fins, I go nowhere.

I wouldn't recommend trying anything NEW this close to the race. Fins have a tendency to screw up my achilles tendons if I'm not careful.

You're going to have a great race.

Monday nite was a low swim yardage nite and I totally sucked! It felt like I was swimming with a bag of rocks around my waist thru peanut butter. Then this guy shows up at the pool who has done many many IMs and the peanut butter turned to molasses. It felt like he was smokin' past me. I guess I am just tired as everyone is. Reading the messages helps pick me up. And by the way, my house already looks like its been bombed. I've started putting things in bags as I come across them to take with me. My husband is having rotator cuff surgery this Friday. He asked the dr if he could wait until after IMFL. Dr sd, "no way". Its good he will have his pain alleviated so I won't worry about him so much. But I am having a bit of trouble focusing.

I have to agree as well, do not try anything new at this point. Do what you have been doing and worry about changing techniques after.

T. Gail - 2009-10-19 8:42 PM I swam at Clearwater beach in Tampa today...very wavy after the cold front that just went through. Made it hard to look for sharks. : ) Just kidding! My totals for this week's schedule are 9:30 biking, 32 miles running, and 11,200 m swimming...better, but still a lot. More taper next week! Except the 14,000 m swimming next week...my coach seems to think I can't swim well enough yet. He's right!!!

Funny you say that...we had a 10ft plus hammerhead swimming out in the st. park while stand up paddle boarding...just saying.

You all are getting close!  I'm looking forward to volunteering and going through all this next year!

Agree.  Had to work Sunday night into Monday morning. Got home, took about a three hour nap. Back up. Mowed the lawn finally (training took priority to anything remotely needed to be done to the outside of house), went for my 2 mile swim...sort of pushing my body since I know I will be pushing it for 14 hours on race day.  Riding the trainer tonight.  My schedule has only a two week taper. I keep this forum up on my computer all day.....in addition to having a picture of my bike as the background on my monitor...My other motivation has been my autographed registration sheet from signing up on Nov 2nd for the race by Paula Newby Fraser who took my registration information at 6:00am.

So, I'm supposed do a 16 mile run tomorrow evening. But it is supposed to be storming all day starting in the morning around 8...so, I'm going to do something I haven't done in any IM training, and that is skip PT (physical training) with my Soldiers, otherwise, it's just not getting done.  I'll invite them all to come run with me, but they think I'm insane, so none of them will show.

I don't feel too bad cause some will just be taking the APFT (army physical fitness test: 2 mile run, 2 mins situps, 2 mins pushups) or "stretching" cause they have the APFT on Thursday.  I took my test today and have decided swimming is AWESOME at increasing my push ups.  I have hardly done push ups and yet did my MOST EVER in 2 mins (86).  My sit ups, of which I also haven't done much remained above the max points, but at 99 they are well 5-10 below my "regular."  No worries. But the run, well, had it been on FRESH legs, I'd probably beat my best time, but after this past weekend and only Monday as recovery, they were NOT fresh legs.  1/2 a mile into it they said, "we don't like running this fast, take us further, but not so fast please."  Haha! Slowest 2 mile time for me in ages, but that's okay as it's still really solid.  But IM training definitely doesn't help with the short 2-mile APFT run!!

Um kick more?  Try this....on a 50 kick set kick easy the first 25 then try to increase your speed the next 25.  Kick from your hip not your knee and try to let your leg whip.  Also the kick is not just down stroke but also pulling your leg up.  The more pointy your toes the more surface area to push the water.  Your heels should just be breaking the surface of the water.  I try to think of my legs as little propellers. Try with and without fins.  Honestly this might be something to work on in the off season.  I used to have a non existent kick til I started in a masters program this year.  Its helped but I definately can still improve it.

HHEH..... on the surrounding sicknees.  My office manager had the vomiting virus last week, my medical asst has pneumonia and the guy sharing office space with me was coughing up a  lung for about 2 weeks.  Plus 1/2 my pts don't bathe.  I know eewwww. I saw this lady today and she and her son both looked like they had not bathed or changed their clothes in about 2 weeks and both were coughing and sputtering.......BLECH.  Avaguard is my friend.

thanks for the advice. Yeah, I am not going to do anything about it now. I will work on it in the off season. I will be heading to masters more too. My coach didn't want me to go once i got into focused IM training. Yeah, I am getting rid of him too.

As far as patients not bathing, I hear ya on that one! Luckily you are dealing with orthopedic issues. I give anesthesia for colonoscopies and imagine the smell of a person how was on the shitter all night and then doesn't shower the morning of the procedure

Planning one last big volume week next week and then a 2 week taper.

Had a Rum Swizzle with Randy!  He is a great guy and the event was AWESOME!

mattajw - 2009-10-20 7:49 AM  Yes, i am taking off on Monday the day before I leave for FL. It will give me time to shop for food to bring down, back the car, check, double check, and triple check that everything was packed before i leave on Tuesday.

When I originally planned this, I was driving from Ohio and planned vacation days for 2 day driving each direction. Since then I have moved to NC and cut my drive in half. But I kept the original vacation schedule. So I get an extra day to organize and pack on Tuesday before. And an extra rest day on the Tuesday after I get home.

And then... out of dumb luck, the following Wednesday is Veteren's Day, which I picked as a floating holiday! Laughing

Another vote for not messing around at this point. Besides.. most of what I've been told is to save your legs for the bike and run. FWIW, I use a single light kick from the hip with each arm stroke; just enough to keep the legs and butt up on top the water.

I was out late tonight (early this morning) watching the Orionid meteor shower. When I saw one I wished for a good Ironman. Later, when I had come inside, I decided that was a little selfish. So I went back out, and on the next one, I wished a good Ironman for everyone.

So now you've all got THAT going for you. Wink

As a paramedic I can give some insight on the not showering thing.  Whereas you get to treat them in the hospital I have to go to their homes to treat them.  If you could see the homes of your patients it would leave little doubt.  TRUST ME!  The worst is taking those same ones that smell (especially GI bleeds) and getting into a tiny enclosed swaying box for an hour long transport.  Combine the smell, the movement, and the fact that they always want it hot back there and it can make for a miserable experience.

Lesleyann, what kind of anesthesia provider are you CRNA, MD, etc?  I had looked going back to school for CRNA so I was just curious.
