Asalzwed - 2012-04-23 4:45 PM Ah-ha! We can just start referring to our efforts in beer and poptarts. I like.

I knew this was the right mentor group for me.

You know it! Are you getting a bunch of that east coast rain in VA?

We are.  It was 80 on Saturday, then in the mid-50s on Sunday and rainy.  Today is sunny, though, so maybe I can run!

What's on tap for everyone today?

Take baby to doctor, find out baby has ear infection.  Just put her down for a nap, so we'll be going out to get antibiotics once she wakes up and eats.  At least I have an answer and she should be feeling better in a day or two.

I did manage to find the Son of a Peach beer, so I think I'll be having one tonight.  I'm going to need it by the end of the day!

I'm so sorry. Those are miserable. My first and second had them one after another. I hadn't had one in forever (if ever), so when my first one was acting so nasty about them, I wasn't very sympathetic. Then I got one. Oh my land. The worst thing ever. I was a very sympathetic mommy after that.

The first two ended up with tubes. Strangely, my third child hasn't had even one ear infection, ever.

Weirdly, neither my husband nor I ever had ear infections as children.  My siblings did, though.  Hoping we aren't heading towards the tubes route.  I don't know if I can handle that many ear infections.

My daughter - Artemis! - had plenty of ear infections as a little one - every tooth brought an ear infection.  But never had one since!  It is miserable but now you know the signs - every time she's teething, get her to the doctor - the antibiotics work wonders.

Interesting.  E is also teething, so it's possible they are related.

How Cow, I now know why this group is called the MAD Manatees.  I can't keep up, sounds like you all are having such fun.  I think it's just going to be easier posting inspires to each of you personally Smile.  Thanks God Yanti made that nice handy-dandy list for us!

I had a 100 mile weekend, swam almost two miles, ran a little more than 10 miles, biked a little more than 88 miles.  Today's a definite rest day, my legs are toast after yesterdays sufferfest through windy Kansas.

Hopefully tonight I'll get a chance to read the last few days of posts, I know there's entertainment value in here!

Cheers!

100 mile weekend  + wind factor = 10,000 calorie weekend

or thereabouts.

Way to kick azz!

Oh thanks Yanti, I'm still hungry too, my body's still nagging me about the deficit.  Should be caught up by tonight.  No Pop Tarts in the house though, they don't last long with 12 and 15 years olds around.  Have you seen the new Pop Tart mini-crisps product?

You just HAD to bring that up, didn't you?

Do. Not. Mention. CRACK. to. a. cocaine. addict. 'Kay?

I still miss my Oreo mini-crisps ... I can actually take or leave that white goo in the middle of regular Oreos.

Right now my tummy is both growling from hunger AND in revolt to whatever I put in it, even plain soppy white rice. Sigh.

Well then, I suppose it's time I admit my weakness. Cereal. Any type. I can hardly ever hold myself to just one bowl. I do the, "Oh I didn't put enough milk in. Oh oops, too much milk, now I need more cereal" thing over and over and have gone through an entire box more than once. If I am out of milk, I have put water in my cereal.

Running has fueled the fire of this addiction, too.

Thank goodness I have found fiber one. It *naturally limits me to one bowl, tastes pretty good and has great carb/protein/fiber ratios.

Mine is gummy bears and the gummy colas, I think that having a place that sold them open 24 hours while working midnight shift is the reason why I panicked got into the bike unit and decided to tri.  (One good pun deserves another Salty)

And I thinnk gators kind of Hisss?  Where is Kate when we need her?

Sorry, its been kinda busy here...

Gators do hiss...they also bellow....and the baby ones chirp....Laughing

Just found out my final position now that the provisional results are available.

I came 423rd out of 444.

In my age group i came 45th out of 45Frown.

My original goal was to finish a triathlon. period. My hope was that i would not come last.

As i have moved along my journey, i have come to enjoy what i have chosen to do, even though i know that i am not naturally built for it. I have also raised my expectations due to my competitive gremlin sneaking out of it's box, and so whilst i am pleased that i completed my challenge, i was a bit disapointed to see my overall position and to find that i was last in class.

I know that i have only been at this for 31/2 months and that i have already come a long way, but i am about to kick it up a level. I want you all to get behind me and push/encourage and generally nudge me further along this path that i have chosen. I don't have long before my next race and i am aiming to be further up the results page when i bring you my next race report.

Rant over and things now off my chest.

So how are your Mondays going? It's still raining here (about 10 days in a row), went out to celebrate the wifes birthday and it tipped it down.

We will all be behind you Allen lashing you with french sticks and poptarts.  Or we could do this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3S0wu4Zbfk

Seriously though, you really did do a great job on you first ever triathlon.  Take this experience to learn and motivate you on your next race.  I was DFL (dead froggin' last) in my first open water swim.  What did I learn?  Swim more and do more races.

Now as for cereal cravings, I don't really have any.  My snacking guilty pleasure has been pretzels.  I use to not like pretzels, but now I can't get enough of their salty goodness.  As a matter of fact, I'm eating some right now.  Must.  Stop.  Eating.  Whole.  Bag.

Hope everyone's day is going well.

Hi Claire!!! Good to see you! Also, great advice!

I think the biggest gains any one person will make will come from consistency. Probably 90%. Just getting out there and doing it. All those other, more specific drills and exercises will get you that last 10%

Allen--Congrats on your race--don't let he results get you down---Last year was my first year in tris, and  I pretty much was dead last in my age group and in the bottom 10 overall in EVERY race I did(and I counted the DQs and DNF in the counts, so I was usually in the bottom 5 truthfully.)...and I started of this season with a DNF....Sooo, I am trying to improve. I would like to not be in the bottom 100 this year and be solidly in the middle of my age group. (I don't aim terribly high; I am realistic! )

Basically, you did your first tri! That's awesome--and you'll do even better in the next one!

OWS today with the husband, followed by some hill repeats on the bike; the husband might even do the bike part with me! I also finally signed up for my Xtreme Run on Sunday--.5 mile beach dash, 6 mile orienteering/trail run, then obstacle course--the best part, the race organization offered a decent discount, so now instead of paying $50, I only had to pay $30! Yay! Also, according to last year's results, there were only 9 people in the race! I hope there will be more this year! I think last year was the first one.

Wow great races everyone!

Allen, my first season was last year and I remember the whole week leading up to my first race about how anxious I was getting.  I got so anxious about it I thought I was going to puke.  What put me over the edge was going to the local tri shop and pick up some last minute items and seeing some of the local elite triathletes shooting the breeze.  They were basically trash tallking each other about who was going to come in first. Competitve juices were all be squeezed out of me at the moment.  It made me reassess the whole reason I started this endeavor in the first place.  Mainly to get in shape and healthy and to HAVE FUN! I mean, why the heck would I submit myself to this kind of torture if I wasn't going to enjoy it?  I'm no masochist (Sorry to disappoint both our fearless leaders here).

It's good to want to be competitive and all but just remember to have fun in the process.  The day I stop doing triathlons is when it stops being fun.  Competitiveness is good for pushing yourself but don't let it push the fun out. It'll just push you out of the sport, which is bad juju to me.

Oh, and Jen...you're not my wife in secret are you?  Weired coincidence.  My wife's name is Jen and my 3 year old daughter's name is Eleanor (we call her Ella). Hmmm..

Absolutely!

Had a good run this morning, felt really good and strong (1.25 poptart effort).  Bike this evening had to be on the trainer as it was pouring rain, but that's ok.  I watched the hockey game while riding--decided to do some intervals to make things a little more interesting, so I increased my cadence to 100+ during breaks in play and commercial breaks.  There was a couple "drop the puck already" shouted at the TV Wink (1.5 beer effort).  Then I rewarded myself with one of my favorite dinners ever--rice, broccoli, chicken and a sauce made of nutritional yeast.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  Hope everyone else had a good day!

bcraht - 2012-04-24 6:29 PM Good morning (afternoon, evening) all!  I got my run in this am, and am now contemplating a second breakfast.  Felicia, I too get nauseous when I don't eat.  I had a bagel and cream cheese right after running; now it is too early for lunch, but I am hungry!  Maybe some yogurt and granola... Plan is for a one hour bike later.  Supposed to rain, so might be on the trainer.

Not had bagels in ages. Are they good for you, or just less bad than some alternatives. Thumbs up on the cream cheese with it. How about adding a little smoked salmon too?

So I had my second day straight of a wee, truly wee little run[zombie death shuffle] and today a tiny little easy bike too.

I'm tired of being tired, that's all. Maybe it's a terrible idea for my body, but it's doing wonders for my spirit which has been a bit gloomy due to the illness too.

There is that whole balance thing to consider.  I'm glad that you are getting out and I hope that you are keeping things in the super easy range.  Your body really needs to recover from this.

Your illness reminds me a bit of the sinus infections that I had in college.  After I graduated and still had a series of infections and related headaches, I finally got a good doctor.  He said if you have sinus infections that occur that close together, it's really the *same* infection coming back again and again.  So basically I had a sinus infection for three years straight.  He referred me to an ENT and she fixed me all up.  Anyway, that was just a long winded way of saying that I hope your body really really gets over this and your immune system can get built back up!

It *seems* to be a different typhoid strain, based on the antigens my body created to it, and which antibiotics it's susceptible to, but the truth is that even such a common illness (for here) isn't that well-studied in its current forms, unfortunately, many of which are at least resistant to one antibiotic and quite a few are multi-drug resistant (the kind I had last time, well, the last few times, but not the time before that). So it could actually be the same one, redux, even though my last typhoid test and cultures came out all clear.

It's an inexact science and I kinda feel like a petri dish.

Thanks, Janyne. Me too, for sure. And yeah ... taking it super, super easy, just enough to be able to feel human and have something I actually want to do and look forward to in the day. I have NEVER once under-done as opposed to a gazillion times overdone, so I'm really trying to ... uh ... under-do myself.

Yanti - mental well-being can do a lot toward getting the physical well-being healed.  Glad to hear you are finding some of that with the zombie death march (love that saying!) and a little biking.  Do your best to keep it easy, as you know.  Sending you health and healing with a {melon press}! Enough is enough, germs, leave her alone!

Allen - I like how you took KansasMom's cream cheese bagel idea and thought to add smoked salmon - that sounds so yummy!  Maybe even add a little watercress...mmmmm....

Ha ha ha, this sounds soooo familiar!!  Watching hockey while on the trainer has its pros and cons for sure.  I tend to get caught up in an exciting play or fight and my cadence slows...oops, let's start pedaling properly again!  I have also done the stoppage/commercial intervals you mentioned and have also yelled at the TV, although lately I've been using TrainerRoad which means I mess up my power/cadence I am supposed to be focusing on when I get caught up in the game.  Oh well.  There's nothing quite like playoff hockey!

Well, I guess like everything else, moderation.  They are definitely calorie dense.  And yes, smoked salmon on top has happened, although not usually at breakfast.

Yes, yes, please continue to under-do yourself...

Hmmmmm is that creepy that I just said that? Nah.

Love all the hockey fan-age in here!!! Who is everyone going for now that the Canucks are out?

I think you should have to do intervals every time you have to explain to someone what icing is. Smile

That would be a lot of intervals!
