I should get MTB cleats, right? If the spin bike have clipless pedals then you need to get bike shoes. Either MTB or road shoes will be fine but you might as well get some you can use for racing too.It depends on the gym. All gyms in my area have MTB pedals. Some gyms in my area have a removeable toe strap thing on the other side. When the toe strap is removed, road (shimano) can be used. In other words, ask at the gym. |

Why do spinning bikes have MTB pedals? It doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe because when spin bikes were developed, at lot of gyms had folks drag them onto a hardwood gym floor used for aerobics or basketball. MTB shoes are easier on the floors. |

I run an out and back on the weekends - up to 20km right now. So I run for 10km then run back home, I look at the tracker on my phone app and is says I've done 19.4km so there we go, 600m running around the block. Infuriating but I cannot let that go. Some people on DailyMile got really upset when I had a route that was 6.66 miles. They kept on saying that I should run by my house a bit to round it up to 6.75. No other route has received that kind of reaction! |

They were my bane for weeks. Ok...they still are, though I'm getting a better feel for counting 100s. Do you swim in a 25m pool? What I do is count an up/down as opposed to an up and a down. So if I'm doing 100's I count to 2 rather than four. It also isn't so soul destroying. Same here. I don't do zero though. 1, 2, 4, 6, etc. |

Ha. I try to do this. But my mind is wandering by halfway down the pool and I am pushing off the wall thinking "is that 4 or 3?" Another reason to swim with a group--follow someone else and stop when they do. Hopefully SOMEONE is counting! |

Melon Presser ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Kirsten! Nice sig line! I puked out some thoughts about doing other strokes here. As for doing fly (or any other stroke badly), I'm actually all for it. All attempts, however poor, bring people another extra little chunk of water-feel and swim-specific strength, which they're going to need in order to implement/build better components of form. I used to think that such things imprinted bad technique, except that: 1. people in this situation are often doing free just about as badly. 2. It's hard for them to actually do enough of (alternate stroke, fly usually being the villain here) to imprint bad technique OR injure themselves. 3. making people do other strokes, whether or not they are very comfortable doing so (usually high with breast, maybe with back, not at all with fly), almost unfailingly seems to improve their free. Just my experience. I also take pains to point out specifically WHAT in (alternate stroke) they should try to replicate in free. Sometimes it just really helps to take a mental break already from endless intervals of free. Oh wait, I need to add that. A random note, too, is that in Australia "I can't swim very well" usually means if a boat dumped you out a few hundred meters from shore with medium swell in between, you could probably make it to land okay. Maybe slowly, but okay. In the U.S., "I can't swim very well" usually means "I could frantically doggypaddle for about 10sec with my head way above water before I drown." It may or may not mean someone can float; often not. I'm suspecting even the horriblest of newbies in Coach Johnny's swim squad fall into the former category. |

That's the thing--unless it's granola or muesli (the commercial forms of both STILL tend to have a lot of junk like extra vitamins and preservatives sprayed on them, plus added sugars), most cereals are processed foods. Generally, food should look like ... food. Like wherever it came from. One ingredient. Raisins tend to have a CRAPLOAD of simple sugar. Of course, you all know how much cereal I eat. Fully one meal a day (out of five or so, not counting snacks, a munchie half cup or in bowl with milk is often a go-to snack for me too) of mine is cereal with lowfat milk. I try to keep it to cereals that at least have whole grain as their main ingredient, so there are SOME nutrients (and more protein) still remaining, and fiber. If I'm on a long trainer ride, though, JUNK is awesome. Frankly I think of during-training nutrition (which surprisingly I don't eat a lot of, don't need to, most of it's under two hours) as a separate category altogether, during which simple sugars are quite desirable. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm resting today. Gave blood yesterday afternoon and today I'm feeling like I did a half marathon. Gonna treat myself this afternoon to a good meal, with wine. I don't much go to restaurants but I sure don't feel like cooking today. My knuckles are dragging so it will be rare, barely warmed red meat. Or maybe surf and turf. All in the name of regeneration.

If you want to use stroke rate as a metric, Tempo Trainers are fairly cheap and easy to use. There's a tri coach on here that has written some good posts about how to do stroke-rate based sets and workouts using them. |

![]() | ![]() Our club's track coach got to go down to Oregon and sit in on one of Galen Rupp and Mo Farah's workouts with Alberto Salazar. In case you don't know, it's these guys: Probably the most exciting T&F race in the Olympics. Anyway, Galen is coming up this weekend to participate in the Indoor Preview and I get to go watch!!!! Also, one of the girls on our team will be pacing Mary Cain (who is an up and coming track prodigy who set American World record 1500 meters at 4 minutes 11.01 seconds) So it should be a really exciting weekend. |
