I wish I could crawl into a ball pull the blankets over my head and cry but I need to make a living so that is not possible. I really should write a book because if there is a way to get burned in my career its happened to me the last 5 years. In a 47 day stretch I will have had 4 days off. No bueno and not really what I signed up for but I gotta pay off that dent that is not mine................sigh. I have a roof over my head, enough to eat and I am not dying of cancer so thats good right? |

TAN, there's a new chapter in my ongoing saga. The harasser has resorted to anonymous means of harassment. Like, a complaint to animal control. And, yes, I'm certain it was from him and not a legit call. Pretty sure my mom is one more incident away from driving out here, picking me up, and moving me home. Ugh - Elaine, I'm both sorry and pizzed off that you're having to go through this. I saw your post on FB about him contacting people you know and my first thought was, shouldn't there be some way for a retraining order to cover this kind of sh*t?? I really hope the tactic of ignoring him works, he seems somewhat... unstable. I've got one, which he's violated a large number of times. Finally, though, the police are taking it seriously. It was a rough few weeks, but I understand that the cops assume that things die down after an initial "cooling off" period (which they usually do), and that since he wasn't showing up or making threats (except for one time), they weren't too proactive initially. Though they were helpful, sympathetic and genuinely concerned. Unfortunately it protects no one aside from myself, and it doesn't protect me if he contacts me through anonymous means - like false phone numbers or animal control complaints. Someone needs to drop this guy. Nobody has a right to impose themselves like this. Did I read right a while back that you said he's a former SEAL? I wonder if any guys in that community would sit him down and "correct" him. I'd love to reach out to someone who could help or even distract him, but I have no idea where to start. TAN smack down! You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us. We'll give him the sock full of inflator cartridges beat down. Tony will hit him in the ankles. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: TAN #203: TANese New Year - Horsing Around Heya TAN - not a bad Monday here Work-ish poll. How do you feel when you find out how much corporate executives make? Does it infuriate you, or are you like "yeah, good talent should be paid well"? I was just reading up on my company's recently SEC filings and our CEO made $12.1 million in 2013. And he started in April. The CEO before him earned $2.5 million.

i don't know that i feel either way (our CEO only made 1.2million Euro last year in salary, and other compensation totalling up to about 4mio EUR) i mean - i think at that level, sure you must reward people and i think 1 - 2 million is fair (which is about what an NCAA D1 coach makes!) but sometimes i see these numbers and think...what the heck do you even NEED 12 million dollars for in a year? that's what blows my mind. |

I think "Good for them. If I could command that kind of salary, I'd absolutely do it shamelessly". Just like the price of any commodity out there... your worth is whatever you can convince someone else to pay. You CEO was obviously able to work a pretty sweet deal for himself. Kudos to him.
I think that people that get upset about CEO pay tend to forget that if the CEO didn't make that money, it would NOT necessarily go back out in the form of higher pay for the workers... it'd just be more profit. The worker, like the CEO, gets what they are worth... which is exactly what they can convince someone to pay them.

I think that kind of salary is out of line with the CEO's value to the company, whereas the bottom level employees are worth more to the company than they are paid. That is, the directly attributable profits are not inline with the compensation. As a proportion of pay, the janitor contributes more through cleanliness and positive image of the workplace than the CEO does in his contribution. There is a net flow from of profits from the worker level to the corporate office. I have known one high school classmate who rose from nothing to a CEO position of a major retailer. His final act was to negotiate the company's takeover in a leveraged buyout. What kind of a person was he? He was the taller than average white guy with the good haircut that is the stereotype. He got an MBA from a good (not great school), married well, he attached himself to people who were moving up the economic ladder, and he devoted himself to work. He did nothing else for 25 years but work. He pretty much missed his childrens' childhoods. He changed jobs half a dozen times to take higher positions. At the end, he was the last one standing. He is reasonably honest, reasonably smart, and hard-working. Not stellar in any of those except maybe the last. I don't know how much he got paid. I am pretty sure he did not get $12 million in any year. I would just guess it was in the $2-4 million range. Was he worth what he got paid? He probably saved the company from bankruptcy and liquidation. He did not bring the company back to prominence. So he saved shareholder values more that he was paid. So maybe he was worth his pay to the shareholders in those final years of that company. The janitors did not save the company so there is that difference. In US companies on average, the largest ratio in pay is from the CEO to the next level of employees. The next highest ratio is from that level to one below them. And so on. It is like baseball players. They look around and see what other people make and want the same pay. It is not really based on the value to the company directly. There are some hugely overpaid baseball players and CEOs.

Not in the least does it bother me. I am ke a decent living, got a roof over my head and none of the responsibility that the CEO's have and I honestly do not want it! More power to them!
Only time I would object or have a problem would be when I a company has to cut jobs and file for bankruptcy and such and the CEO's get raises! |

A lot of times that comes from contractual obligations for executives who have ownership/are vested in the company. Not saying it's right or wrong but legally they are required to pay out those folks before moving forward. It does not make a lot of sense to people like us though! |

No idea how much the man in charge around here makes. But, whatever it is, he deserves it. He founded and grew this company on his own. I honestly don't even know what most CEOs do on a daily basis. I know what my company's president does... and he deals with A LOT. |

Yeah I totally understand that, but I would much rather see a CEO take a pay cut from 12 million to 8 million! That is still a heck of a salary for one year!!! |
