Expert 941 WA | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! thanks for your replies about membership guys. i keep coming back to the idea of doing this one HIM in early september even though i know at the level i've been doing, i'm not ready, but maybe i could be, but maybe i'd like a higher membership, etc. so, yesterday i did my first brick of 41 miles --> 1.8 miles and i don't feel any worse for wear, so it sort of reared its scary head again and now i'm like, maybe i should just DO this race????? i think i will wait to see how the Oly goes at the end of the month. i don't know. yeesh! |

I know we are all different, so what worked for me may not work for someone else, BUT, last year I did my first HIM, and it was kind of on a whim.... I had been training pretty hard for all my olympic lengths and was feeling pretty good. I even approached some of the distances I would need for the bike and the run (but never did get to 56 and 13.1). I took several weeks off to get married and go on a trip so did NO training. When I got back, I said "what the heck". Put no expectations on myself except to finish and signed up for the HIM. I didn't do to bad! To that date, it was still the longest ride and run I had done. I really think if you are strong at the oly distance, you can push yourself through a HIM. It may hurt! But you can do it. Just see how you feel after the Oly. If you are hurting for a while or it's a struggle, maybe wait a season. But if you bounce back pretty well, you may have a shot at an HIM. |

Do you still have that time goal/requirement that you mentioned before (under 6.5 hours?) because you didn't want to be out there racing for longer than that? I'm not saying that you couldn't do that, but IMO when you do a long distance race "on the fly" you often have to let go of time goals and make the goal of just finishing the race. On that note, part of the run could always be walked if need be, however, the swim is the swim, so again IMO this would be most important to make sure you are okay with that distance of a swim. I would think that if the oly swim goes well you would have no trouble going slightly longer. Edited by shiggy 2008-07-08 6:33 AM |

I haven't worked out in a while and haven't posted on here in even longer. I have had a few issues in my personal life that have needed to be resolved. I just broke up with my gf of 5 years and things are pretty much a mess. We live together and is making and awkward situation even worse. I hope to get back into the swing of things once I get a little more settled. |

Extreme Veteran 335 Toledo, Ohio | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! Sorry to hear that. Exercise and talking about it helped me the most through the most difficult time in my life when I lost my brother. Also avoiding caffiene, sugar, and alcohol helped me to reduce some of the anxiety and sleep better. |

Expert 941 WA | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! thanks claire and jim, i think i'm going to just do the oly and see what happens. i know i can do the swim in a pool, but OW is not as clear, so i think i'll just see how it goes. and claire, i think i would have to relinquish the 6:30 for sure, i'd have to pick up some speed to do it - but after doing the century, which was just 7 hours of riding my bike, i feel like i could have the patience to do a HIM along those lines too. we shall see. it's just that i hope to graduate in december and maybe have a job by next year, so part of me feels like this is my last chance, really, to be free enough to do one. it's just next year is so unknown and unplannable right now.... |

Stick with the oly and see how it feels to you. Maybe you will decide that you want to focus on the oly distance and just get faster. Doing a fast oly sure isn't anything to snub your nose at. It's a tough race distance. Then if you decide to do the HIM, you will be used to training hard. |

Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: RE: LaurenSU02's group - CLOSED! Is anyone else watching the Tour de France? Yesterday, David Millar was going 80kph (~50mph) on the flats. That's ridonkulous. How fast have you guys gone? I think my fastest was on a downhill in Quantico, I got to 40 and then got too scared. Here, I can't get over 35 because the bridges are too short to get up any real speed. |

Here, I can't get over 35 because the bridges are too short to get up any real speed. I watched the first stage and recorded some of the others Steve is out of town for a few days so I'll have something fun to watch while he's gone! I'm a biking weenie and haven't gone very fast yet. Like 23 MPH on a downhill... yup, I know that's pathetic and I need to work on it! I started my road biking adventure during the winter on a stationary bike in the gym (with one of those monitors with courses loaded on it) and got nervous just seeing the hills on the screen. Seriously.. what the heck was wrong with me?? It's getting better but I have a lot more cardio and physical strength that's not getting transferred to biking because I'm so tentative out there. Kind of like a leisurely ride all the time.. no "all out effort" because as soon as a turn or a downhill comes up, I'm on the brakes! My first tri went OK, but there was really no chance of me really wearing myself out too much on the bike because I can't push that hard on it yet. Ahh well.. it'll come. Maybe one day I'll go 50..
