Swim 32:43

Bike 3:10:45

Run 1:55 and change

Finish 5:44 and change

Holy cow that bike course is a killer!  You do some monster long hills 3 times (8 Cat 5 climbs).  I tried my best not overcook the bike but that still wasn't enough.  Run was tough but still managed sub 9 pace.

I had only one HIM before this one and I PR'd my swim and run.

This race is a fantastic event, the race environment is great, especially the run.  It's 3 loops so your friends/family can cheer you on many times.

RR to follow in the next day or two, maybe tonight while it's fresh in my mind.

Wow, great job, can't wait for RR!

I have two pace booty submissions!!! My first submission is my friend Shang (Godzirra) he ran the 10K with me this weekend. Major props to him. I couldn't imagine hauling that much muscle 6+ miles. He finishes saying, "If-gasp-I-gasp-want-gasp to do any longer distance-gasp- I'm-gasp- going to have to- gasp- change- gasp- my body composition"

My second is my sister in law!!! Yes, that's a unicycle. She can juggle while doing it, too. It's so funny because my brothers group of friends and I are all the type of people that have a general athletic ability and can usually jump in and try something and be decently good at it but this unicycle has us all stumped. Meanwhile she (who is NOT athletic) jumps right on and does circles around us. Good stuff!

Very nice! I've never tried a unicycle, but I'm still pretty sure I know how the attempt would turn out.

Felicia, I forgot to comment on your HM "nutrition" (I hate using that term, but it IS appropriate.)

I love, love, love that you used real food. I don't think you need to second guess that at all. I am sure it wasn't easy to choke down without water but in a lot of cases the gels they have are not as effective (or easy to swallow) without water, so you probably had an advantage.

Someone in tri talk had posted about potatoes as race food and I loved that idea. In fact, it made me crave mashed potatoes all weekend so I made a HUGE batch of them last night.

I guess you will want to figure out a way to carry them better as your bike jersey didn't work out but I still really like the idea.

My race belt has little loops for gels. I bet you could make the sandwiches work ...

Also!!! I saw this last night and was dying to share it with you guys. We have talked a little about running form and how changing it generally is not a great idea. This has some really great sources and at a minimum, gives you all something to think about:

"Form doesn't matter.

Overpronation doesn't cause injury. Even if it did, you're out of luck: motion control shoes don't control motion. Pronation and the mechanisms of running injuries.

Elite runners get injured. Barefoot runners get injured. Cushioned-boot-wearing runners get injured.

What correlates with injury? Too much, too soon. Higher mileage. Maybe a history of injury. I read a study the other day that claimed a correlation between hamstring inflexibility and injury.

So what if your form is "bad" at 7 min/km pace? I bet if you got in shape to race 5 km in 15 minutes, your form would look more like that of other runners at that pace. Or maybe it wouldn't. Famous coach Alberto Salazar modified elite Dathan Ritzenhein's form to try to match that of 5 km world record holder Kenenisa Bekele. Ritz has had injuries in the past, and the form monkeying resulted in more injury. Did it make him faster? Who knows; he's signed up for the Chicago Marathon in a couple weeks and did well in the Philadelphia Half Marathon. See The Perfect Stride.

If you prefer lighter weight shoes, why run in clunkers? Shoe salesmen are not pushing evidence based recommendations. Or, if those clunkers are better for your ITBS (did I read that right?), there's no shame in sticking with what works!

Heck, some people run backwards. They must be one giant injury. Or what about dancing, basketball, any repetitive action that the body wasn't "designed" or "evolved" to do? The body seems pretty adaptable, if you give it time and don't do too much, too soon."

Random post. I'm sitting in a felony criminal court room waiting for a case to be called and am having a hard time concentrating on my case because there is a defendant with the most fascinating hairstyle I've seen in court in quite some time. I wish I could take his picture, but think that may cause a scene. The guy is dressed nicely in a good pair of pants, long-sleeved white shirt with tie, but that conservative picture looses something when you look at his hair. He has male patterned baldness with the hair around the sides do his head short and that patch of hair at the top really long. Like past his shoulders long. He has it tied back, so it's not obvious from the front, so the judge may not notice it. But what fascinates me is what it would look like loose. It is very thin, fine hair too boot. Anyway, back to your normally scheduled programming.

Hey man, sounds like he is just working with what he's got. Sounds like it would make a most excellent top knot!

It's too bad you can't give it a little tug, you know, just to let him know you noticed.

HAHAHAHA!

The whole sketch artist crap always makes me laugh. I saved the sketches from Lindsey Lohans courtroom appearances because I thought it was so funny.

OK, McManatees. I have been contemplating this "situation" for a few days now and thought I'd get your thoughts ...

Whether or not to pay for/go to Masters for the month of October

1) For the first week of October Masters would be the 1st and 2nd (Monday & Tuesday) due to pool closures

2) I have my OLY "A" race on the 7th

3) I will be on vaca the second week of October so not going to Masters that week

4) I have no training plan in place the 2nd-4th weeks of October because I thought I would enjoy/could use some "down time" before starting my HIM plan

5) Down time could include but is not limited to not getting up at 5:30am to be at Masters

6) The last week of October my plan includes swimming on the 29th & 31st

So essentially I have 4 planned swims for the month but may or may not swim during my off weeks if it is available.

Pod-thoughts?

This is an oldie but I can't resist posting considering we had beer photo homework ...

These are bottles of our national beer, yessirree it's Indonesian and not half-bad (owned by Heineken, they bought it a few years back) ... Bintang Beer. (means Star)

They are sporting ultra-chic beer burqas, straight from Afghanistan (our friend is a CNN photojournalist who plops into Bali to decompress for a couple of weeks every time he comes back from Iraq or Afghanistan before heading back to New York).

OMG beer burgas!?!?! I need some!

Does your masters group meet twice a week?  So you would definitely go to four of the eight planned swims?

Even though you have only four swims scheduled, you could attend six masters swims, right? (taking out the week that you will be gone and on vacation).

I would still do it for six swims; I probably wouldn't do it for four. Since the swims are M T and your Oly is that weekend,  I don't think the swim would interfere much with your taper. Maybe not push it as hard as you could on the Tuesday session?

But I say all this because I think swimming is relaxing and helps me recover from whatever ails me.

Is my math right? I'm not feeling that hot or thinking too clearly.
