I did my favorite long run.

18km, just sitting on the edge of Z1/Z2, not looking at pace just HR

At the end I look at average pace and can tell if I am on or off fitness. Wasn't bad today.

My BFF is racing Xterra worlds today in Maui so I have been trying to get updates on whether or not they will swim. She said there were swells yesterday but I haven't had any more updates.

ETA: I just saw the live feed from the swim start, looks like it's a go on the swim. My friend is hoping to podium in her AG! Go Amy!

What AG ?

A friend of mine is 30-34F.

F45-49

Good, we don't have friends competing for a podium :-)

Go Angela, Go Amy

Here's a preview for you Yanti... yes it REALLY IS that flat.  And hot out.

... the next day was stormy when I was there but still warm.  My camera was focused but it was misty farther out.  Here's the jetty for ya, looking out from the swim start beach... have fun!

Yanti -- stay smart and enjoy the journey.  I'm pulling for you!

Anybody else have workouts that have you a little afraid?  I was really worried going into a run today.  I can't seem to shake that fear going in to certain workouts.

Gonna crow just a little bit.   In 2003 or 2004 I had gained a significant amount of weight and was at least 275#, maybe more, but that is the number I remember.   Just before getting into tris, I lost a bit, maybe down to 250 or so.  Lost some more while racing, but really raced the last few years at about 235-240.  I used to tell myself "I'm just big boned."   It's kinda true, I have a bigger frame.  I would also tell myself I'd never get below 200, and I'd look like a holocaust survivor if I had to get to a "healthy" BMI of 194. Went back up to 245 or so in late 2009 early 2010 when I got sick and couldn't train as much.

2011 I decided to commit to real weight loss, and take responsibility and ownership of my own body.  Lost a few lbs and did well in the clyde division in 2012.  I made further commitments a few weeks ago to take it even more seriously.

This morning I weighed in at 198.2.  I am stoked.  I don't know where it's going to end, or what my bet weight is going to be, but I am climbing SO much better on the bike, my run is coming along nicely and I am consistently seeing splits in the 8s.  I like tht I don't have the option to register as a clyde.  And frankly, just like the way my body is starting to look.  Maybe, there's a 6 pack somewhere in the future.  Sounds ridiculous, but I never thought I'd get below 200, so nothing is impossible I suppose

Fear... no.  Dread stepping out the door into the weather this time of year?  Absolutely

I just pretend everything is a swim workout and then I'm less disappointed.

Question for the BQ-types: what kind of mileage were/are you putting in?  Definitely not for me, but a buddy of mine just sent me his 21 week BQ attempt plan prepared by a coach.  Buddy is right at 20:00 for a 5k and a lifelong runner.  Plan is mainly 35 mpw (give or take) and peaks with a few 45mpw.  That seemed really low to me.  Big speed session once a week.  I thought is would be in the 60-80mpw.  He is shooting for 3:05 on a flat/coastal course.  Am I off base?

Anyone planning to race in the southeast US??

I race almost exclusively in the southeast.  Right now I know I'll do Raleigh 70.3.  I normally do most of the Setup Events races that are in SC, and a few in NC.  I'm still on the fence about Eagleman, but it's looking likely as it fits well with current vacation plans, though I'm also pondering doing something else in that area.

Set Up is bringing a 70.3 to Charlotte September 29, 2013.

Info from slowtwitch:

Race will be point to point.
Swim Start and T1 will be at The Davidson College Lake Campus on Langtree Road, Cornelius. T2/Finish at Bailey Road Park, Cornelius.
I haven't seen either course. Wetsuit legal.

The 2013 event will be announced on November 1, 2012 along with the specific date and time for online registration.
Online registration for the 2013 event will open on November 12, 2012.

x2.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum and people ALWAYS guess me to be 10-20 lbs heavier than I really am.  So don't worry what people think.  They'll form a mental picture that matches their "normal", no matter if you are above or below it.

Did 5MP and 20MP tests today on the bike.  This is the first time I have done a 5MP test.  My quads were absolutely searing after that.  Took about 2-3 minutes for the muscle fatigue to subside.

http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/94511

My 20MP was 300W and my FTP bumped up 2 watts to 285 from my mid-summer peak.  But, my w/kg came down a bit since I am about 6 pounds heavier right now.  Still, happy with that number considering I have had 4-6 weeks of easy(ier) training.

5K run test Tuesday or Wednesday.

Man I'm afraid to see what the damage is when I eventually do another FTP test.  Probably will be January though.  I think my peak was just a shade under 250 back in May this year.  I'm guessing 200 now but we'll see.

(Caveat:  I've run only one open marathon, a few years ago, and I did BQ, but it was on the old standards.  I am probably in right around 3:00 shape right now, based on training and recent races.)

Some guys could of course easily go sub-3 on 35-45mpw.  On the other hand, 3:05 for a 20:00 5K guy is a big ask, IMHO.  In other words, he needs both to gain some speed and to extend it to 26.2.  Without knowing anything else, I'd guess (and of course I'm mostly guessing) that 35-45mpw isn't going to do both of those things.  But I hope I'm wrong!

I celebrated the pending east coast Armageddon with a local 5k this morning. I was pretty happy with my time. I'm no speed demon for sure (darn those kids that practically skip by me) but it was better than I've run in a while. Umm, since i didnt run for 9 months last year it was probably my first race since a marathon in 2010. While I've only been following BarryP for a few months I think the plan is working. My short runs are still just 1 mile. Long ones at 3. I approximate the distance if its a route i don't know. I haven't been wearing the garmin or obsessing over time/distance. My log entries are usually guesstimates. I just run easy for short, medium, long. The only thing I'm trying to remain accountable for is running 6 days a week. Now to keep it up while the world comes to an end.

Anyone in the hurricanes path other then Kim?  If so stay safe.

Not much on tap for me today.  Just some strength training and a short run.  Work has been super crazy as of late.  Working out is keeping me sane.

Like Chris I am working on losing weight.  For the first time in forever I have gotten down under 130.  I remember when I thought being 132 was hard.  I'm actually pretty close to my ideal weight so it'll be a slow steady process for me

Like Chris I am working on losing weight.

I also have to work on the weight. Yanti's comments are true. It's hard to lose lots of weight in peak training season.

Now's the time, or at least now is the time to not put it on. Sigh !

A buddy of mine is a plastic surgeon. Maybe Lipo is an option
