Our club's track coach got to go down to Oregon and sit in on one of Galen Rupp and Mo Farah's workouts with Alberto Salazar. In case you don't know, it's these guys:

Probably the most exciting T&F race in the Olympics. Anyway, Galen is coming up this weekend to participate in the Indoor Preview and I get to go watch!!!! Also, one of the girls on our team will be pacing Mary Cain (who is an up and coming track prodigy who set American World record 1500 meters at 4 minutes 11.01 seconds)

So it should be a really exciting weekend.

I was drooling before you even got to the pic ...

I think in consideration of a) you getting to watch all these awesome T&F things in WA and OR, and b) my doggystyle videos, you owe me a vid of you doing the Mo move.

Hahaha totally! Too bad Mo won't be up here. How about Mo doing the Usain Bolt? OR Usain doing the Mo!

Dear Injury Gods:

I promise, with Manatees as my witness, that I will start slow and build slower if y'all can make this here Achilles issue all better sooner rather than later.  As evidence to my promise, I give you:

  • I am listening to the PT.
  • I am listening to my body (had no more creaking, tried 3 reps of first/easiest exercise, creakiness returned, stopped immediately)
  • I am wearing running shoes with dress pants so that I am not without my orthotics and heel lifts all day.
  • I am aquarunning.  For real.  With the belt and everything.
  • I am reading up on how to stay injury free while running.

So please, Injury Gods, especially since I dint do nuthin' to make this happen, couldja fix it?

Sincerely,

Kirsten

Well put, I hope the Gods are listening!

I am specially hand-heart-carrying your request to the Injury Gods on a daily basis. I have special cachet with them.

Unfortunately, the Illness Gods seem to hate me. Hm. You try with them for me?

Maybe we need some sort of injury/illness contract

  • I will listen to my doctor and physical therapist
  • I will listen to my body
  • I will...

A random note, too, is that in Australia "I can't swim very well" usually means if a boat dumped you out a few hundred meters from shore with medium swell in between, you could probably make it to land okay. Maybe slowly, but okay.

In the U.S., "I can't swim very well" usually means "I could frantically doggypaddle for about 10sec with my head way above water before I drown." It may or may not mean someone can float; often not.

LOL J sits somewhere between definitions. She's a sinker!

I realize this was meant for Salty, but I thought it was the perfect opportunity to combine my tongue, melons, and the Manatee mug all into one second-worst 2am shot ever.

Also, I took this pic of Phoebe when I was looking for the Vegemite. I had a strange idea that I should somehow feel guilty about some or all of this picture, but not sure why.

Hey Kirsten! Nice sig line!

I puked out some thoughts about doing other strokes here.

As for doing fly (or any other stroke badly), I'm actually all for it. All attempts, however poor, bring people another extra little chunk of water-feel and swim-specific strength, which they're going to need in order to implement/build better components of form. I used to think that such things imprinted bad technique, except that: 1. people in this situation are often doing free just about as badly. 2. It's hard for them to actually do enough of (alternate stroke, fly usually being the villain here) to imprint bad technique OR injure themselves. 3. making people do other strokes, whether or not they are very comfortable doing so (usually high with breast, maybe with back, not at all with fly), almost unfailingly seems to improve their free. Just my experience. I also take pains to point out specifically WHAT in (alternate stroke) they should try to replicate in free.

Sometimes it just really helps to take a mental break already from endless intervals of free. Oh wait, I need to add that.

I'm suspecting even the horriblest of newbies in Coach Johnny's swim squad fall into the former category.

I can't ever argue with you and your logic / knowledge / experience.  (Not that I want to)

Have you ever had a newbie get a bit demoralized by not being able to do a good butterfly/breast/back?  Just curious, not arguing, I promise.

To return to the cleats for spin class discussion for a minute...

These cleats

mtb cleats

That go with these pedals

mtb pedals

Will work for pretty much any spin bike that I know of.

Road cleats like the one below may or may not work with the spin bikes.

No. They get demoralized when I show up and immediately confiscate all their toys. :D

Also, always feel free to argue/criticize/contradict if you feel like you have a valid alternate point. That's kind of the whole point of a discussion ... why would I say anything, pretty much, if everyone already agreed with me? Then it'd just be a "that goes without saying" situation.

I actually think I'm really awkward in person, okay, that's true, but somehow I also make the person I'm working with feel like a rock star. That's whether they're a colleague, mentor, friend, client, etc. Or at least, I try. And they should. I don't associate with losers. Don't have time.

So basically, so-and-so is a rock star for even trying to do XYZ (stroke included) and, one size never fits all. If it's clear (especially over several repeated attempts) that a certain method, metaphor, or structure isn't working for someone, I move on.

Heh. I wrote the manual for those bikes (I mean that literally!) For those and several other types of indoor cycling bikes, the flip side of the pedal is the clip-in; no cage/strap removal needed.

But yeah, as you (and I think others said) you really have to look at your gym's models.

That's so true when we get a newbie he puts them in my special lane and within 30secs it's clear they belong two lanes over they say they're slow but they are not. A real slow newbie would be pretty intimidated by even my lane but for me I'm so damn welcoming!!!!

You guys are killing me with this thread!  I go to sleep, wake up and there are 4 more pages.

Fingernails hurting because of a swim... definitely leveled up as a triathlete!

Vegemite, nasty, don't do it! (sorry aussies)

Keep posting these - degree runs Arctic Manatee they are def motivational!

I am seriously looking forward to the Minnesota Wild games with our two new acquisitions Parise and Suter.

Numbers shouldn't be rounded, no 0s or 5s.

Also my butt is very sore from these trainerroad rides and I think I almost lost a finger while climbing a few days ago.  Nice day everyone!

We've just about locked up a new NBA team,  hopefully NHL will follow shortly. In the meantime, I am A. jealous B. A Cannucks (and Pens) fan

Gotta spell it right if yer gonna be a fan!  Canucks.

I don't know how well I will do out in Seattle without a NHL team... however we have the Timberwolves here so I can pass on the NBA team.

ponderingfox - 2013-01-10 11:34 AM

Muskrat37 - 2013-01-10 10:27 AM When it comes to counting laps in the pool, I count backwards, and by 50s...so if I have a 250 set to do, .i push off the wall and that is 5 to go....on the off laps, I repeat "5" in my head....and do that all the way down...helps me keep track and gets me through the long swim days.

The problem I have with keeping track of everything in my head is that when I'm trying to keep track of my 50s, I am incapable of counting my stroke rate.  Not unless I'm doing a set of 50 or 100.

I have to count my stokes on my warm up and cool down laps so I don't get confused with the count.  I count each up and down up to 20, repeating the number I'm on for the whole length.  Then I just kind of tally the amount of "20s" I've done.  So far that is the only way it is remotely possible for me to count my laps sort of well.  I do really need to work on drills instead of just endurance so I doubt that my method would work as well when I am doing a proper swimming workout.

I am so excited about getting an NHL team here in Seattle.  Hockey is at the top of the list (with skiing) of things I miss about living in Colorado.

Go Avalanche - bury the Canucks!  Behind the Deadwings - the Casucks & Queens (LA Kings) are tied for 2nd on my most hated NHL teams.  Damn I miss Hockey.

Canucks.

Ummmmmm, you are aware that the Canucks beat the Avs 6 out of 6 times last season, right?

Technicalities, when you have faith in the team.

P.S. Oh, and because I'm fondling my warm, sweet Manatee mug and thinking of you.

That'd be plural you, too.

Geez, if not a video, at least a picture!  Jo sends us pictures!

The bag of cheerios outside the box would NEVER survive with the pug.

PS Did you know I have a matching mug? Only by default but I have one. PB ordered two and we figured you needed more pop tarts more than another mug.  I should do a mirror image shot

Yes, I know you have the twin, and even my rather forgetful Mutti REALLY knows you have the twin Although I did get her a very nice new ladybug mug for Christmas (that has pictures of ladybugs crawling out of the drink ... yes, we are odd) which has momentarily distracted her. Oh, and I gave her the IMWA Finisher's shirt (I mean, I can't wear it ... no one else really can, either, and of course she loves it).

My dogs are weird. They're actually really well-behaved, sort of. They're horrible beggars (will stare at me and my every move, albeit from a distance when I eat) but if I leave food out (like even a plate on the "coffee table" which is actually a plastic shoe rack) they won't touch it.

Great. Lisa's growling at the kitchen ghost and sniffing the air suspiciously. I take it all back!

I like your "coffee table." I should implement that into some of my designs. The question is, do you keep shoes in it?

Hell no. The Hobbit Maid was SO delighted when I got it and immediately started to try to put shoes on it ... I flipped. I do have two shoe racks, one for the flipflops, one for the running (and 2pair cycling and 1 aqua) shoes, but she's started to line shoes up in front of them and moving outward due to overflow (and hoping I buy another shoe rack because I keep tripping on them).

Well, I would say it is because of the breed, but Lisa is a lab, who are also famously food motivated, so not sure.  I guess nobody at Yanti's house reads the textbook.

There's a textbook?!?!?!

Hahaha ... stacked on my bed in the following order are (bottom to top):

My sister's magazine (she owns a high-end glossy), Sheila T's book, the Holy Bible (KJV), a book on Slovenian history, Our Daily Bread, the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, a daily spiritual reader based on God Calling, and my journal.

I try not to stack stuff on the Bible but frankly in my house it's a miracle (and a sign of very recent Hobbit departure) when anything is stacked at all.
