Ernesto- I was told by "a guy" (I have a former brother in law whenever he said I know a guy, we took it as code for he is about o get screwed) who was a pro cyclist in the 80's and 90's. He insists that more than 30 minutes on a trainer does nothing for you and is a waste of time. The only "real" way to improve on the bike is on the road.

Personally, I think he is full of it, just because of my own gains on the bike the past two winters. But, I wanted to hear what you think.

 

I say he's completely full of it. I think one of the top pro's (Matty Reed?) trains almost exclusively on the trainer.  I've moved almost all my workouts to the trainer because of traffic issues, daylight issues, etc.  I plan on going to one of the local metro parks for longer rides in the spring and summer, but that can be a real time suck when I'm used to getting all my workouts done by early in the day...

 

I prefer to do my training on my trainer as I don't have to stop for traffic lights, don't have to deal with cars etc. I also find the trainer is more like the treadmill in that you are going constant more so.  However I do like to get out on the road for the wind, hills, etc experience in the summer time.  The trainer itself allows me to train at any time of day as well.

Rode with temmates, hilly part of Dallas. It was fun, at one point I was going downhill and I clocked 43.6mph in one of those speedcheck signs that the police mounts on the side of the road. Speed limit was 35, boom!

I second the motion, the trainer is excruciatingly painful and if you do a Sufferefest you will know what I am talking about. Intervals on the trainer will make you VERY STRONG.

Andy Potts is another pro that trains exclusively on the trainer and he's a beast, usually winning races from wire to wire.

I am working 24/7 for past couple of days to meet a deadline.  i am off track with month challenge.  it is hard not to beat myself up, but if i miss deadline or do a poor job on proposal then 20 staff will have to be let go.  

my challenge is to stay on track during times when i am so busy at work - any suggestions would help.

also, does anyone have any experience with Paleo diet?

Cheers Ernesto! It's pouring like hell today here, not good for anything (other than the trainer), wind gusts are destructive and the state of Queensland is on flood alert... All streets around look like a mess from leaves and branches blown by the wind. Not exactly a happy Australia Day...

Cheers Ernesto! It's pouring like hell today here, not good for anything (other than the trainer), wind gusts are destructive and the state of Queensland is on flood alert... All streets around look like a mess from leaves and branches blown by the wind. Not exactly a happy Australia Day...

And down south in Victoria, where a number of my mates are doing the Alpine Classic bike ride they have had to change the some of the courses because of bushfires.

Charlotte, I did the paleo diet for about a month but it was very expensive and very time consuming. Seeing that I am in college with two part time jobs, it was just too much work for me. If you are as busy as you say you are it might be too much of a hassle but that is just my opinion.

Rode with temmates, hilly part of Dallas. It was fun, at one point I was going downhill and I clocked 43.6mph in one of those speedcheck signs that the police mounts on the side of the road. Speed limit was 35, boom!

 

Its always fun to break the speed limit on the bicycle.

Thank you. Got sidetracked with my Mom coming to pick up my daughter. 

I also want to say that I believe there is some female pro who does most of her workouts in her basement on the treadmill and the trainer due to how it fits her schedule and she can be in a very controlled environment. I think I read that on ST a while back. Anyone know for sure?

I hear everyone talking about these sufferest videos and these computrainer videos. How does one go about making it fit into their bike program like when training for an IM?  

I'm using a free IM training program from trifuel and the bike portion has certain workouts in there that are specific distances and times.  So just wondering do you just worry about total time for your bike workouts vs following a specific plan.

I know using somewhat of a generic plan not designed for me and how I am isn't the best way to go about it but I have used a friends HIM program before and it worked very well for me. I felt prepared for my HIM and felt that I would be able to meet my time goal. When I did the race I actually was about 4 minutes faster than my feel great goal of 5:15. 

So more or less curious about the bike workouts and I am wondering if I should change things up here and there for my bike workouts like doing a sufferfest?

Just finished my race report from my half marathon race today.  I finished in 1:46:06 (non-official yet) and am happy with my time since this is the toughest HM in Guatemala with over 1,200ft of climbing in a 5 mile segment.  I was not expecting to PR, but was able to improve my time over last year's race by 4-5 min.
