YAY!!!!

how ya doing otherwise?

Meh. I'm trying to solve the same problem from yesterday. My boss doesn't listen to me when I suggest a solution and then suggests the same solution.

I guess that's what happens since he gets paid more. I wish he had provided more help 4 months ago when I started all of this.

yay... graduate school.

People wonder why I say they should really consider if they need a PhD.  Some people seem to have no idea what they are getting themselves into.

I can build lots and lots of 13-lbs bikes that cost more than my car and would promptly fold upon my mounting them.

Despite not really ultimately enjoying grad school at Penn State... well, I enjoyed it... just not the research end with my advisor... I am still considering a PhD in systematic theology so I can teach college/seminary... still want to do that.

but I better decide soon... the clock is ticking...

I actually really like grad school, well at least the research aspect of it.  The social leaves a lot to be desired, though at least in my current program people are passably friendly to me.  That's the kind that gets me the most of about the academia, it seems like professors spend so little of their actually time doing research.  It's not that I don't think I might make a good teacher or extension agent, it's just that I'm really good and research and that's what I really like to do - I don't want to end up with a job where I'm only doing actual research 10-15% of the time.

Artemis - do you get a chance to take off and have vacations?  Our advisor doesn't mind if we take a couple of weeks off (cumulative) during the year so long as we are keeping up with what needs to be done.

Yes.  My adviser is very good about letting us go on vacation.

I don't really like the culture of academia and the process of getting a PhD.  A lot of times it seems like an old boy's club and that committees make it hard for students because that's what happened to them when they got their degree.  It's like hazing.  I think grad students should have better support systems in place from the university, especially for things like airing grievances.  No one really wants to hear about it, but most people I know seem to think the system is kind of broken.

I do get paid, but if I was living on my own, it would be barely enough to live on.  I don't know how people do it.  My department just started paying for supplemental health insurance.  Before that, people were on their own and had to use what was included with student fees.  Somebody almost dropped out because they couldn't pay a hospital bill and was going to get a real job.

I could go on, but it would be long and whiny.  I am happy it's friday.

I have heard of all those things happening and more, but fortunately that has not been my experience.  For me the process has been very straight forward and my committee has been supportive and help.  My advisor is always clear on her expectations and we often talk about both long range and short range goals.  We work very well together, she is by far the best boss that I have ever had.

I hope you have a happy Friday.  Do you have any plans?  How is the marathon training going?
