Wow, what a great experience.  The fans were amazing... I think my favorite part was when I popped a wheelie going on one of those terrible hills and a group of fans exploded with cow bells... that supplied me with 100x the energy it took to get my front wheel off the ground.  Good Times!!!

Dewey right? Dude you were awesome. Loved the energy. Between you coming through going crazy and the next guy behind you not being able to hold back the tears it completely summed up Ironman!

Great job!

My philosophy is that we all experience similar levels of pain, so the last finisher had to fight harder and longer than the rest of us.  So that puts you in the top 10.  Congrats IRONMAN!

Congrats on everyone's finish, you all were very impressive!  I had my toughest IM ever and am just glad to have finished.  It's funny to see the drastic differences in people's races, though most did really well.  There were some sad looking people out there, me being one of them.  I had the 3rd worst marathon of 2500! :-)  I hit my swim/T1/bike/T2 splits dead on with expectations.  It just fell apart really badly.

Way to go BTers!

Awesome race!  Had some trouble on the swim.  I got kicked real bad in the mouth starting out and was kind of gagging on blood for awhile.  Then later I had someone tear off my swim cap and goggles by accident.  Luckily I grabbed them before they sank under the surface of Lake Monona.  But I knocked out a 1:34 swim, a 7:31 bike, and a 4:56 run for a finish time of 14:18.  The best part is unlike my last Ironman I was smiling the whole time and really enjoyed the experience.  I just went real conservative and steady and finished feeling great.  Yes, I probably could have pushed harder but it was fun, enjoyable, and rewarding.

Congrats to all the athletes on an amazing day and if any spectators or volunteers are reading this THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!  You guys were AWESOME.  This race had the best volunteer and crowd support of any I have participated in so far.

Humbly yours,
Athlete 554

So....

I pulled the plug after the first loop on the bike. I have a bone spur that is causing an impingemnet in my ankle. It's plagued me pretty much from the get go this year. My chances of finishing were minimal at best but I wasn't about to admit that to anyone before the race. I think only my wife knew how much it was affecting me. I had a great time during the swim. The highlight was when I popped up for the traffic jam around the first buoy, people were mooing. I laughed for the next couple minutes. I was shooting for 1:30 and ended up with a 1:25 swim. I was really happy with that. No kicks, only a couple bumps. I also really enjoyed the portion of the bike ride that I finished. I really like that course. I thought I could get past the pain but after 60 miles on the bike my ankle was excruciating. I'm not sure why it hasn't bother me that much on my training rides. But, oh well. I was really bummed Sunday and half of monday but I shed negative results pretty quickly if I didn't I'd be a miserable sales person.

Now I'm on to other things:
My entry into the world of professional eating http://www.politospizza.com/monsterpizzacontest.asp
Teaching my kid to ski this winter
New kid on the way in April

I'll take my next shot at the IM in 2012.

Thanks to all the volunteers and supporters. Except for the person holding the "Do a wheelie" sign on the hill on Midtown road. I just can't pass up a challenge like that. Next time around I'll be rocking the 32t cassette so I can do a proper wheelie.

Other things I learned:
- I don't need to get to transition at 5am, but the 1/2 hour nap I took near the swim start was nice.
- Don't go the the Orthopedic Surgeon's office to review MRI results two days before the race. That weighed heavily on my mental fortitude. Sometimes ignorance is a good thing.

Aw, Dave, sorry to hear that you had to bag the race, BUT, better to get healthy than screw something up worse.
You're still an Ironman, though!

Thanks. It's not been the best year for training, I'm much more at peace with stopping then I was on Sunday evening. Like I said, I shed negative experiences quickly. It's a good and bad thing, in this case it's a good thing. I've already forgotten the bad experience and am looking forward to two more years of preparation and trying again in 2012.

2011 is going to be about enjoying my kid/s, family time and having fun.

I was working the finish line collecting timing chips from 9 to midnight...and I remember you coming in Dewey!  I also got to see the guy I gave my hat to at the sunscreen station, the blind athlete and the lady with the road rash on her face finish.  You are all so inspiring!  Thank you!

First of all, I am sorry to read about a few of your disappointing experiences. But it sounds like you have made peace with what happened, which is good to hear.

For me, the day and experience couldn't have gone any better. I hit times exactly as predicted on the swim and bike. I struggled at the end of the run, but I knew I would as my longest training run was only 15 miles (lesson learned: train for DISTANCE, not TIME in my case... a lot of the advice here on BT touted as gospel does not apply to everyone and I should have listened to my gut instinct). But I continued to smile and laugh and generally have the time of my life out there. I was so happy the entire race - it was everything I'd imagined and hoped for.

Thanks of course to the volunteers out there... Whizzzzz and 1stTimeTri and AmyJo and RunningJayhawk and MissKelly and mr2tony to name a few I saw out there. You guys rock, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

well, the wheels fell off my marathon bus, but I finished - 2 hours after my goal.   AND, I've come to terms with what a great learning (not so great feeling) experience that marathon was.  It's humbling to experience what it feels like to have complete body function meltdown with 12 miles to go on the run.  Hopefully, now that I've been THAT low, races can only get better!! (right?!)

Congrats everyone!!  Even the few non finishers - lessons learned, right?  And what doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger!!!

THANKS volunteers - you are totally awesome!!

Good luck to all you participating next year - I'll be there cheering!!

Time to move on to the next adventure! (hunting photography anyone?! )

You guys all did great out there. I had a blast volunteering and even helped Gina Crawford set the course record by handing her a nice juicy sponge on the run ;-) I'm all registered for the race next year and am very pumped. Can't wait to be on the other side of the experience. Hope to see some familiar faces out there next year.
