Master 1531 TORONTO | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED AWESOME!! Great report and the pics are cool. So did you puke? You look like are about to in the last picture! Congrats to your kids too! I'm curious - you look really pumped - do you do weight training? Or is that just a result of getting lean from your iron training? I want bigger muscles!! I should probably lift a weight or two LOL |

Thank you! I'm still plugging away. I am trying to focus on my run the rest of this year and trying to get to running consistent, easy 5K's rather than struggling to complete one. Dropping about 50 pounds would really help, but I'm trying to take that a little at a time. Still, looking back, I am proud of what I have accomplished in fitness since March, despite the lack of much progress in weight loss. Great seasons for most everybody in this group. I am proud to be a part of it and to be able to share in everyone's journeys. |

Or is that just a result of getting lean from your iron training? I want bigger muscles!! I should probably lift a weight or two LOL Thanks Marcia! I did not puke, but I did push it extra hard at the end. I guess I must have drooled or something or maybe that is gel on my chin not sure. In regards to muscles, I use to weight train all the time (since high school) until the start of training of Ironman. Here is a link to my first half marathon in which I probably weighed 180-190lbs http://www.theguerreros.org/2008HalfMarathon.htm Doing endurance training burns up muscle, so I lost a lot of muscle and fat. The benefit of muscles is they burn calories even while you sleep, the downfall is muscle weighs more than fat. So working out while training for me can be contradictory (everyone's different). I might do some light weightlifting in the off season to supplement my training. For you I think it might be a good idea to supplement weight training, even if it is just 15 minutes before a training session. Have a great weekend everyone! |

Regular 97 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi all: Hope all is well. Keep forgetting to check in to see what's happening. So I completed the LA Tri a couple of weeks ago. I definitely did better than last yr, my first attempt at Olympic distance. My biggest fear, was the open water swim, I struggled last yr in getting past the waves and felt utterly exhausted after the swim. So I was hoping I would improve my swim this year, trained hard for the swim. The water was actually warmer than the temperature on land and the waves coming into shore were not as high as last year. I hung back in the group as we ran from the beach to the water because I know I'm going to be one of the slower ones. Again I struggled to get past the waves and to the first buoy (I ended up floating on my back part of the way) but I got past. Then I found a rhythm of freestyle (every other stroke) and then breast stroke and repeat. I did get past by a couple of waves after me but that was ok with me this year. I didn't get discouraged, I had a better perspective this year. I need to learn how to finish better. I swam part of the way to the beach and when I could feel land, I tried walking but the waves were not my friend. I think I need to swim as much as I can until I can no longer swim. My T1 was too long, I had to go use the potty. Transition, is an area of improvement. My bike time was much better than last yr however, I got tired half way through and my lower back was killing me. I'm thinking about having my bike professionally fitted, hoping that would resolve some of my backache. I kept getting passed by other athletes on way better bikes and in some way got "tri bike" envy. I'm sure a better bike would help but riding more than once a week might also be beneficial for me. My run, is one of my fastest 10K time and this is factoring the hill that we had to run up twice (it's at least a 40 degree hill). I know if I trained harder in the run I can probably run a sub 8. By the way, they were filming "The Dark Night" underneath the overpass that we were running on. Snowflakes were coming up on the overpass. That's LA life. Overall this was a good race, I dropped about 15 min from my time last year and even though I only bettered my swim time by 3-4 min but I felt good in the water and that was one of my goals going into the swim. I know there are plenty of areas that I can improve one but this was a good barometer of where I need to improve on. Now I want to decide if a HIM is in my card for next year. By the way, my birthday is no until end of this year but they counted me as 45. I didn't bother to try to change it but I wonder if that's standard, that is your Bday is on the border they'll move you to next age group.

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi Jeff. Congrats on the LA Tri! Dropping 15 mins is awesome. Yes, your Tri Age is your age on Dec 31st for that entire year. It's easier for USAT to figure it that way. So January 1 we all age up a year regardless of when your birthday is. |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Okay guys. Some year-end Homework and an update of where we'll be in 2012. First, the Homework Between now and December, I would like everyone to revisit the Goals they wrote down at the beginning of this. Revisit those Goals and reflect on them. Many of you accomplished them. Some did not. Some did not due to any fault of their own (life events, injury, etc...) If you care to, please write a few paragraphs reviewing your year. This will be good for you, and for others. Right down you winter goals, and perhaps broad-stroke goals for next year. Now, the Update. I hope to keep this Mentor Group going until December. Then, I will be starting a new Mentor Group. I am going to ask George to host it with me so it'll be a dual Mentor Group. How bout it George? *blush* I'd like all of you have remained active to rejoin the group!! We had a great group, very laid back, honest; just some nice mild chemistry with a nice touch of bizarre humor. For those of you who, sadly, disappeared -- you will have to make a valid, and convincing case for wanting back into the group. I will also look to add some more members, perhaps some feisty and motivated members Again, the group will be "Goal Oriented". Whether your goal is a 5k road race, or an Ironman; between George, myself, Greg, Rene -- we have people in this group who have experience and have done 1-mile to 140.6 mile races. But the objectives will be personal, and it will be about indiviudal Group Members pubicly stating their 2012 Goals, drawing out a road map of how to reach those goals, and other Group Members supporting each other along the way. I really want to see Mike and Ted get back to 100% health. I want to see David continue building run mileage. I want to see Marcia do another 70.3 I want to see Jeff continue succesfully balancing an infant and triathlon. I want the group to grow together. This is my wish. Hopefully you guys share the same desire.

If you care to, please write a few paragraphs reviewing your year. This will be good for you, and for others. Right down you winter goals, and perhaps broad-stroke goals for next year. This is a neat exercise! I looked back at my goals: Took me forever but I DID do the century ride - 100 miles. Also did the Cobourg olympic and even with the crazy "swim" (term used loosely) I managed to take 15 minutes off last year's time. And then... I did my first HIM. Again - took me forever but cool that it wasn't even on the plan and I did it!! As for the weight loss - January 4th I weighed 143.4 - that went up to 147 after weeks of eating schnitzel and drinking beer in Germany !!?? But I'm pleased to say I'm now down to 138. Not as muscular as I'd like to be but wearing my skinny clothes and feeling good. Still a work in progress! Now, the Update. I hope to keep this Mentor Group going until December. I have been pretty quite over the last month, both in training and in the group. I have been getting in some great family time during the weekends and enjoying a bit of a break. Two straight years of IM races really can burn you out. On a side note, I have been doing some research about opening a multisport store next summer when I retire. That has also been taking some of my time. Looking at trying to make a living out of a sport I have come to really enjoy. |

Hmmmm, Self Reflection...sounds painful JK, really need to put some thought into it as the year winds down. Assuming all goes well healthwise, I do know that the beginning of the year will be run focused. Looking at a 10 miler in January, HM's in March and May(doing this w/my wife) and the 15k I committed to earlier in the year also next March(legs hurt just thinking about it). I'm leaving tomorrow for an 8 day vaca that will hopefully aid in healing the pinched nerve. Day after I get back, I'm scheduled for a sprint DU w/surprise, surprise no training
