mndiver - 2012-02-01 12:05 PM I might be able to brag about doing something that none of the superstars in this mentor group have done by the end of the weekend. There are ice bike races in Minnesota being held this weekend and even though I blew the chance to register on time I have a friend who thinks she can get me in. I have never done this and don't know the slightest bit about it (ie) distance, pacing, strategy, equipment, etc. But boy am I ever stoked to give it a try. It looks like they have approximately a mile course with curves and switchbacks plowed out on the lake. I really hope I can get in.

That sounds awesome.  What type of bikes are they riding and how is it possible to not crash a bunch of times?  Are there different distances?  I hope you get in and can tell us how it goes.

I havent heard back from my friend yet so I'm not sure I'll get in. The problem is we have had a pretty much non existant winter and there is no snow right now. That means they have had to move all skiing and biking activities to one local lake. Limiting numbers of participants due to crowding. I think most people ride regular mountain bikes with studs in the tires. I have been told with the slushy conditions I would probably actually be better on my Pugsley. I do believe there are a lot of crashes, but not as devastating because when you hit you slide for 50 feet instead of thud. I really do hope to get in.

Fred D - 2012-02-02 8:43 AM  What do you guys run in?

Currently running in the Zoot Ultra TT 3.0...looking for another pair before that year model (2010) goes away for good. I really like them and was surprised that I could run in a more minimal shoe than the Asics Gel Kayanos I had worn for my first two seasons.

The Zoots I replaced at about 250 miles. The Asics were good at giving me about 300 miles. Nonetheless, I always notice the little aches and pains (usually the shins) when it's time for replacement.

Fred D - 2012-02-02 2:43 PMI get not much more than 300 miles out of my shoes.Currently I'm running in saucony kinvara. I like em'. What do you guys run in?
For some reason I seem to get a crazy amount of miles from my shoes. My Saucony Progrid guide 2's lasted 765miles before I decided to change them (my knee was starting to ache after every run). My current guide 3's are on about 630miles and I'm starting to get the same pain in my knee, so it might be time to change these ones too.

Saucony Pro Grid Triumphs, but I really don't do a good job keeping track of the miles.  I have about 4 or 5 pair floating around the house with different levels of mileage.  I can tell the ones I use on trails more often

Today, ran 6 this morning.  Drove down to the beach to run it nice and easy.  I find that if I run harder my hips get much tighter and hurt more afterward, so just kept it at an easy dialed back pace.  It's funny, with the weight loss and some improved fitness, my easy laid back pace is near to a sprint pace a year or 2 ago.  Started out a bit unmotivated and with a headache.  Nice morning, pelicans gliding over the waves, dolphins feeding in the harbor.  By the time I got done my headache was gone

Masters swim tonight, 3-3.5K

Wow, that's awesome!

I track my shoes pretty religiously right to 600k - by then i am usually feeling it and should be switching anyway.

Your run sounds fantastic!  These are the things i think of when people say things like 'Runners never look like they are having fun' - well, did you run on the beach today? hahaha

I currently run Brooks Ravenna 2 and Mizuno Wave Rider 14.The Brooks are my main run. The Mizuno are good for me on short faster runs and snow. I use to run Asics (same series) until they changed the sole material. I started having issues that's when I went and saw Josh at Appalachian Running Company. He put me in a pair of Brooks about 4 years ago and I have been running them ever since.

I know everybody's mileage they get from their shoes is different. I get 300-500 miles from my Brooks. I change them out early and at hint of leg fatigue from sole breakdown. I could definitely get more miles but wish to change early to avoid any injuries. This has work for me for many years. In my opinion if you are running in shoes with pain your defeat the purpose. If you feel pain you are well started for injuries.

Better question.  Why is it in your face on the "out" and the shifts and is in your face on the "back"?

Wind is your friend    Or as bryancd says, wind is the other guy's problem

I totally agree with you, I just don't realise that I've put that many miles on them til I start feeling sore. As soon as I do I change them.

In other news, I had a bit of a successful swim tonight. I was swimming 10x100m with 15" rest adn for the first time I managed to keep all of them under 2:00. Now to actually sort out some swim lessons and work on get that time down!

Probably won't end well, but I was bored and gave it the ol' college try....

I am having more fun in the flip turn thread.  Is there anything better than a flip turn thread?  I think not

What?  Another flip turn thread?  Must go read that before it gets pulled.

I generally don't mind a head wind, and of course I love a tail wind.  I hate cross winds.  But I still go out and get it done.  I get blown around pretty good.  Thankfully I have good bike handling skills and can hold my line pretty good.  Now, the garbage and dust blowing around....that's a different story.

Well said James.. I just did that a week ago. The dogs were barking pretty bad and went out for a shoe treat. The last two year I've been using Asics and have never had a problem. They fit me better than any other shoe out there. I do use orthotics so anything that comes with the shoe goes straight to file 11. I decided to venture out and change and purchased the New Balance 905. Starting to like them and they are feeling ok. Getting use to the feeling of the tongue being high and touching high towards ankle area.

I run in K swiss. The Keahou for training and I have used Blade light run, K-ona and now the Kwickey blade run. I really like the Balde light run the best . I unfortunately get 200 - 250 miles out of a pair but have been able to find some decent prices.

All I have on tap is a swim today.  Going to be a chilly day getting in and out of the pool.  Tiny cold spell here today.  Only suppose to last today though.  It's the wind when your nice and warm after swimming an hour that's the tough part when you get out.  The pro's and con's to outdoor pools.  lol  I might try and get another ride in since I shortened yesterday's but they are already piling the meetings on me so we shall see.

All this talk of shoes is making me want to buy new shoes...

What does everyone else have on tap?
