Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kenj - 2012-07-09 2:41 PM Bricks are debatable about the value, although I think a couple of them leading up to race day have value and certainly to a newer triathlete. I like bricks and do them from time to time, but I use them more as a way to eliminate a double session or to add in extra run sessions (probably part of the premise of the Time Crunched Triathlete). Some coaches prescribe a lot of them, other coaches don't. Those that don't believe that you gain more value from running on rested legs. I am sure the argument could also be made that to some extent the value depends on the individual as well. At the end of the day, you should do the training that you and your coach (if you use one) feels works best. Adam, I haven't seen you mention it or I missed it, but was the heat a factor? I know it was hot this year down your way, but don't what the temps were last year. The time off running probably was a factor, but considering the volume you had for the marathon, probably less then you think. Ken - I think I mentioned it but it was the hottest race I ever did. I was dripping from sweat the entire race except for the swim. I didn't really hold back on the bike I kind of new I was in for it on the run. I do like a few good bricks before a race! Makes me remember I'm a triathlete. I've done races with and without doing bricks and for me I like to do a few before the race. I seam to do better on the run after having done a few bricks. But during my training for the most part I don't do bricks or I don't count on them as run training. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My race as a whole was ok Sunday but my swim was great. I finished 1st in my age group and about 25th overall. The bike was fine and the run was ok but I was so excited about the swim that it didn't matter. My group was 35 - 39 and 55 - 59 going off at the same time. An older gentleman moved up right in front of me. I didn't think much about until the horn went off. The fact that he had no goggles should have been a clue. First thing he did was go straight to the breaststroke and boot me right in the jaw. I got around him very quickly and was on my way. One guy crossed my face and I thought I might have been off course. I looked up and was right on line, so I kept swimming. I was in smooth water with no one touching me (never happened before). So I was thinking that I was way off line. I looked up and I was almost at the first bouy. I got to the bouy and no one was there so I took a second and looked around. I was about 20 feet in front of everyone. What?! I put my head down and kept swimming. The rest of the way in I couldn't believe no one was catching me. Another neat part of the race is that Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kane were racing their first races. Not sure how many Nascar fans are here but they were very nice guys. They were very approachable and were very nice to everyone. Lots of pictures and signatures for whoever wanted them and then they had some cold beers afterward. I was impressed that Jimmie hit the wall at 190mph Sat night around 10 PM and was at the race at 7AM. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, I've been absent for the last few weeks with traveling for work. I've been able to keep up with you guys on my phone a little and trying to get a run in whenever possible. It seems like everyone is doing great. We're finally getting a break from the heat (at least for a few days) and I'm back at home for a while. Getting back in the groove. Hope everyone is having a good week of training. |

Jimmie Johnson was second in our age group in the swim and his total time was about 1:11:00. Kasey Kane finished around 1:10:00. But I really can't say enough about how nice they were. I'm guessing there must not be a whole lot of nascar fans doing triathlons. At least not at the Charleston race last Sunday. He and Kasey were just walking around with not many people talking to them. I don't think many people recognized them. They spent about 10 or 15 minutes just talking with me. At the end of the race when the local news media starting talking to them, a lot more people started paying attention. I haven't been able to get into the races too much the last couple of years. Nascar definately needs to take a look at their product because most of the nascar fans that I know have all said the same thing. I understand the safety issues but they need to do something to make the races a little more exciting. |

Its not surprising though that they are good athletes, kind of surprised though that in the Carolinas they weren't recognized. Now back to our regularly scheduled triathlon programing! |

It is going to be time consuming as he is wanting me to do 2 sessions a day and it takes about 30 minutes or so, but doing it right will be worth it. Spent some time discussing the progression and time line. Looks like the 70.3 in Florida next May is a safe target for returning to tri's, with possibly doing an indoor tri in March. Still progressing with the run, up to 5 miles and feeling pretty strong. Ready to start hitting the seemingly weekly 5K races coming up the next couple of months. But not till after this weekends volunteer duty at Musselman! What other training issues, topics you guys want to talk about? |

hmmmmmm...... do any of you play around with tire pressure at all and/or have experience with different tire/tuber combo's? I put on some Vittoria Open Corsa CX tires and latex tubes. I usually run Conti Grand PRix 4000s and the max psi on them is 120. The Open Corsa max is 140. I used 135 rear and 130 front. The ride felt FAST, but much rougher than my conti's. I don't think I'll have time to make any more adjustments before the race. However, Racine has a VERY bumpy section in the first and last 2-3 miles on the bike course. I'm not sure if I should try to drop pressure in them. What do you guys/girls think? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi guys! Anyone racing this weekend in the Musselman or Mini-Mussel? I'll be heading up to the NY area tomorrow morning with my family for the Mini-Mussel on Saturday. Figures that just before our long vacation my daughter falls from her bed in the middle of the night requiring a trip to the ER and stitches, then yesterday, I need to go to the dentist for an emergency root canal! Hope I can get the fuel I need for the race through soft foods! Looking forward to this weekend and hope to see some of you there!

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ken - if you go at PT the way you stick with training, you should be fine in no time. Brian - I don't have any insights on tire pressure but I'm interested to hear if anyone else does. The Conti tubulars I ordered (can't wait to get them and get em on the new race wheels) can go up to 170lbs but I have no idea how I'll actually run them. Vivian - Good luck on your race this weekend. Training - Eh, my consistency seems to be getting better. That's mostly because I changed my diet a week ago to get rid of what hurts my mornings the most, booze. I changed plans for IMAZ on the fly. I was using a BT custom plan, but I ignored the fact that my "performance membership" was expiring. When it did, I figured I'd just renew when they offer one of the discounted periods. Oops, my planned calendar was wiped out, along with the plan I was using. Even if I renewed now, I think the timing would be all off, plus I already had Fink's book. So now I jumped over to week 12 of 30 of Fink's competitive plan. I really only use it for volume mix and run intensity. I've never followed a tri swim plan (masters or a varied swimmer's workout) and I'm using Jorge's bike plan (again...lets hope I can get through it this time). So in the end, I should match Fink's volume (at least for now, not sure I'll be keeping up with 20hr weeks later on) with the extra intensity I need on the bike. |

Although I am as big a gear junkie as anyone, other than flats, I have yet to notice much difference from one tire to the next. Maybe I haven't gotten to the level that the tires matter much yet. But given my sentence to the trainer for the foreseeable future, time to make lemonade from lemons and put some high quality work in for the next year or so. Also, losing the last 20 or so pounds would help me. What ever you decide to do, make sure it works before trying in a race. You would hate to have a mechanical problem due to that section of road. The other thing on tire pressure, I guess the roadies get a kick out of triathletes obsession with air pressure. |

From the parts of Fink's book that I have read (I keep finding books I want to read first), I think you should be fine to pick it up there. I would even suggest trying some of the swim workouts, but I do think this far out that Jorge's plan with Finks volume will serve you well. One of the big problems with IM's is that they take a lot of planning, some luck to get in to some of them a year in advance and with the goal, comes some anxiety over being prepared. The challenge that I have had is to balance this enthusiasm between wanting to get started training for the race, and trying to maintain that focus right up to race day without getting burned out. I think with your race schedule Bill you have some shorter races that have kept you from going out with long runs and bikes every weekend. You will be served well by this. |

I don't know how to balance year-long obsessing with lasting through an IM with my near term goal of just catching that guy in front of me at any given time... At least they aren't totally dissimilar goals, and I don't have any other hobbies right now. It would be much harder to balance IM dreams with winning a bowling trophy or something ![]() |
