Well after Knee surgery and being in a slump I am happy to say after not running since June of 2012 that I completed my first non stop 5km run outside this last weekend.

The extra 20+ lbs I have on me isn't helping but it was pain free and I sweat and it was great. I felt so good for hours after.

But I am having a hard time breaking that slump and cycle after not working out in so long. Even simple runs and rides seem difficult as heck.

I manage to work out for 4-5 days then I go into a slump for a week or two. Hopefully some nice weather will show up and I will stop allowing myself some excuses.

I have had a rough 8 months in life in general and need to get back in the swing. I know I haven't been around much. But I am committing to completing a Sprint Distance Triathlon for June.

Not race just complete.

Hope everyone is well here, Kind of miss chatting with everyone and reading what is going on. I just could not do it while I was sitting still.

SPANKY'S BACK!!!

Glad to hear you're up and running.  Jump right back in and we'll help give you the kick in the a$$ you need to stay motivated.

Did you hear??  Trevor's running a 29K.  WTF is that, some weird Canadian distance?  eh? Wink

Hey now. I am running A 10K on Sunday. Saturday is my tapering, training run for Sundays race.

I am so happy that you are back in the MG and exercising again.  I understand what you mean about not visiting the group when you are in a slump and/or injured.  The same thing happened to me a while back and then I realized I missed everyone too much to pout.  So I came back, just like you.

Julia, our speedy runner and swimmer is going to crush Boston.  It is a great event to spectate, although a little hard to do it given it's a one way race.  Maybe if you go, it'll spur even more enthusiasm for sticking to your sprint plan?  Just a thought.

That is what I am hoping. I was filled with Self pity from Injury and a lot of personal change that no body needs to hear about. No need to look at negative stuff.

The reality is I am back and will try to check in here a couple times a week. I have limited personal time on the internet at my work now.

But it is nice to see what everyone is doing.

Who's toeing the line and racing this weekend?  Tell us about your race, why you chose it.  What's your goal and how do you plan to achieve it?

Let's also talk swimming this week.  How do you put together a swim workout?  Does the focus of your workouts differ from day to day?  Can you share a favorite workout, or some favorite drills?

No racing here.  My swim workouts are almost completely drill/form focused - trying to get my balance sorted out.   Although my breathing is still not where I want it to be, it is time to get back to building up my endurance.

It makes me smile from ear to ear!  I told Paul that I have another five years to use my new Parlee and lay down a respectable time!  his goal for me? finish in the light of day.

Now that Dino has committed, who else will join us for a little MOO action?

Still wondering why I entered a Canadian marathon and wondering how I can maintain my OCD status when there won't be mile markers for me to cross-check with my Garmin. Figuring out my KM pace and strategy is just too much for me. I can do meters in a pool, no problem, but I just don't run KM!! That said, get a piece of that bad boy tomorrow, Trevor!! I'm setting out for 19, just so I can say I ran more than you. Cuz that's how I roll...

You two enjoy your 29km and/or 19 miles.  I think I'll do 6 or 7 and call it a day.

Dino-when you sign up, let me know!  I'm game to come back out, but I'll probably be in a new AG by then!  Or, I could just come out and scare you to death by running alongside you at mile 12 and ask you how you are doing as your brain is going dead!????  Doing okay???  Feeling good????   Awesome memories!

Good luck to all the racers, what ever distance and measuring scale you use.

I have been out traveling and have not done a damn thing all week. So now to get back on track. Hopefully tonight get a run in and some core work.

No racing this weekend, ride on Saturday, and 12 miler on Sunday....oh the sheer joy of it all. Ok yes I need to get back in the pool....hmm favorite workout in the pool....none of them . I get in and usually decide then what I am going to do, distance and drills...I was much better at planning last year.

117 minutes? Odd... Why not 2hrs. That seems strange. Take it easy on the ride and leave it all out there on the course during your 10 miler...

Back in town - what an incredible trip.  Almost makes me feel bad for enjoying Jeff's birthday as much as I did!!  Impressive snow, incredible skiing, beautiful Yellowstone......Elk, Moose and lots of other yummy meals Wink and way too much good wine.  The surprise worked, despite Birdie's FB postings....

One significant wipeout on the mountain.....still feeling the pain, really glad I was wearing a helmet.  Little concerned about Oakland (the running part) and can't wait to see Kim and meet Suzy!

Awsome running this weekend Kyla, Jayne, Steve and Ryan - and CONGRATS on the wedding, Ryan!!  How's the honeydo list looking?!?

As for swimming, I do believe I have forgotten how.  Need to get on that.  Vineman is looming, with IMLT right behind it.  Yikes.

I think maybe I'm not setting quite as good an example for the kids as I'd hoped: I'm lying out on the hammock chilling out after my swim, its one minute past 6pm and my 9 year old shouts out the window "hey dad, it's wine o' clock!". Am I that predictable???!

My plan is calling for a 117 min bike ride this afternoon. I was wondering if I should put this off till Sunday due to my 10 mile run tomorrow. I usually feel fine the next day after a long ride. I am not trying to win the the 10 miler just trying to beat last years time. What would be your advice on this situation?

Thanks

I would say it depends on the type of ride it is.  If you're doing threshold work, hill repeats or some other kind of power effort, I would move it until after you race.  If it's an aerobic ride, Z2, I would keep it as is.  As for the 10 mile race, I would start in the somewhat hard RPE and build to hard by the half way point.  Goal would be to hold it right there unless you feel like you have something left in the tank to go very, very hard the last 1-2m.  Good luck!

Well another solid 5km base building run in the snow today. I mean who the BLEEP ordered snow? I could have swore winter was over. GRRRRRR

Well snow builds character. And Shin splints and sore legs and ..... But the knee was good through the whole run. Easy pace for me. Kept heart rate high enough not to be freezing cold. Which really isn't hard to do with that much cardio base gone.

But another pain free run is a great run in my books. Then had breakfast with my training partner. Albeit we don't really run together anymore. She ran the front of the pack I held up the solid back of the pack for the group run.

Run, Breakfast and now about to jump in my hot tub in the snow.

BEST SATURDAY MORNING I HAVE HAD IN A LONG TIME.

Have a great weekend everyone.

The only suggestion I would have is to round that bike time down to 115 minutes.  What are you, Canadian? hehe

Of course, my post is a day late anyway.  What did you decide to do?

Who's toeing the line and racing this weekend?  Tell us about your race, why you chose it.  What's your goal and how do you plan to achieve it?

Let's also talk swimming this week.  How do you put together a swim workout?  Does the focus of your workouts differ from day to day?  Can you share a favorite workout, or some favorite drills?

No racing this weekend for me.  I'm still recovering from last Saturday.  Today my biggest issue is two of my toes.  I've lost the big toenail on my left foot and a small toenail on the right.  It's amazing how much a f-ing toes can throb with pain.  Good news is, the outside of my left foot has a sore spot from the race, so I'm getting it all healed and rested at the same time.  A few more days of hobbling around, and I should be as good as new.

I have a couple of standard swim workouts that I do, but when I get bored and need something new, I use a website called Swimplan.  It's free to sign up, you can personalize your workouts based on the type of stroke you want to work on, your typical pace, and the equipment you have.  You can get one free workout a day and save the ones you like to your favorites.

I LOVE SWIMMING for a few reasons: 1) A good swim workout is like a free whole-body massage.  It really helps me work out the kinks from the running/biking/lifting.  2) I feel light and graceful--most of the time  3) It's challenging as you try to refine each little part of your form 4) It's peaceful, just you and the water, and the constant repetitive motion.  You can really lose yourself in thought.

Good Luck to our racers....report back soon!

I just skipped the bike all together. I did a decent 10 mile run at 1:42:04 was hoping for 1:45 so not to bad. The whole race I stuck to the plan. I get to mile 9 and all the sudden a sharp pain emerges from Achilles tendon. This was horrible because I was planning on doing my fastest mile. I could barely put pressure on it. This happened in one race last year also. I am satisfied with the result as it was about 13 mins faster than the same race last year.

The plan I am on uses weird numbers because the guy says he likes to keep pure 10% rule ineffect

I will post the report in a few

Have a Great Saturday

Congrats on the Snow run, Spanky!  And welcome back.

David, that is hilarious!  I love vacationing in Hawaii, because at 3pm, I can say, it's 6 pm back home, let it flow!!!

Linda, you crack me up.  I am sure you and Suzy will be fighting for the wine list next Sunday night.  Wait, what???!  Is that really just a week away?  Holy Carp.

Jayne, a light week for you is probably still a gazillion miles...you are our Ultrawoman!

Have a great weekend, MG'ers!
