This is definitely an option for me since I am only three hours away. Just need to convince my wife that she will not loose me for a whole year in preparation.

I am thinking about doing another IM next year. I was planning on signing up for IM Tremblant or IM Whistler. But, then they released Chattanooga, now I am thinking about doing that one. So many choices.

Well, today was interesting. It was 80 degrees, with a humidex of 93. The wind was gusting out of the south at 30+ mph. At least it wasn't sunny, with full cloud cover. I did a 6 hour bike ride (108 miles), then did a 7 mile brick run in 59 minutes. Tomorrow is supposed to be just as hot, maybe a bit warmer. I have a 2 hour run and 90 minute open water swim scheduled tomorrow.

3 more weeks then IM Wisconsin.

Have a great weekend.

How is your training going?

Training's good, but a few weeks behind. Half marathon tomorrow. More house guests at the moment.

Hope the weather is good for you this weekend!

Chatanooga is realllly nice! Was there for a day after FL 70.3. The aquarium is awesome!!!! My folks live only 1 1/2 hours away, but probably a full is not going to happen for me next year.

Ken is somewhere deep into the 3rd lap of 4 in his Steel distance race. When I first saw they added 4 miles to the iron distance, i thought "meh, its a long day anyway". Now I'm imagining the pain of the full racers.... Go Ken!

Hope you had a good HM Robin!

Now that was an interesting Sunday morning. I got to Bird's Hill Park for my scheduled 2 hour run. It wasn't overly hot, just very humid. There were some nasty clouds to the North and the odd rumble of thunder. Lap one went ok, then with about 4 miles left the skies opened up and it was a torrential down pour. We got 1 and 3/10th of an inch in just over an hour. The lightning was so close that the the flash and the clap were almost simultaneous. It was unbelievable. I couldn't do the swim because of the lightning so I drove back into town and had lunch at Wendy's and read the paper. A couple hours later it was nice and sunny and hot so I headed back out to the park and did my 85 minute OWS. Nothing like tasting your bacon cheeseburger burps while swimming.

I hope all those who raced this weekend did well. And to all those who didn't race, I hope your training went well.

Dwayne

Yes Robin, I hope your race went well.

Mine was a struggle for the run.  But otherwise a great weekend.  Had a nice dinner with Bill Saturday night, and he is a super volunteer, especially after completing his own HIM!  With a small field of 26 IM competitors, Bill was the only remaining volunteer at an aid station on the run course!!  It was nice to always see a friendly face, 8 times!  Those 4 lap courses are a mental challenge!

Great to meet you in person BIll!

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I have put together two weeks in a row of over 10 hours of training which for me, it is definitely an accomplishment based on my work schedule and family life.

Not sure if I have shared this with the group before, but I struggle with energy issues which based on most of the symptoms I have, it points to a thyroid issue. I have been tested multiple times and the doctor tells me my thyroid is good, but can't figure out why such changes in my energy. This Saturday, I felt good and went on a scheduled 70 mile ride. Got back and felt like I still had plenty of energy (enough for my wife to get some landscaping work out of me), but I could have gone out for a run no problem. The Saturday before, I rode 60 miles, got home and just laid in the floor spent. My nutrition before and after the ride was the same and if anything, I had more built up fatigue this week. Just have to keep trucking.

Most of the reading I have done, tells me that the last 12 weeks of preparation for an Ironman, it is difficult to gain much speed and one needs to do lots of the Zone 2 work to build endurance. My goal will continue to be building my bike and run mileage and get a couple of race rehearsal type workouts of at least 8 hours in the next 8 weeks.

In the mean time, I am getting my nutrition dialed in and feeling better about it..

Question for the group.. Do any of you have a checklist that you have used for a full distance race that you can share?

Thanks,

Did the Madison Open water swim this past Saturday. Lake Monona temperature was 75* at the time - for those doing IMWI. It was comfortable for me in a wet suit, but wouldn't want it to be much warmer (not likely with 3 more weeks to go).

I posted this question to IMWI thread too, but for the IM banquet, is it something worthwhile to bring the family to? Will need to look at getting tickets if so. Thanks!

Great info about the water temp. Thanks!
I enjoy the IM banquet and think all first timers should go. However, if I had a family and had to pay $30.00 per ticket I probably wouldn't go that route. the food is nothing to right home about. When I did IMAZ, I really enjoyed the banquet. IMFL wasn't so great and I actually felt bad that my friends paid money to be there. I don't know what the IMWI banquet will be like but if you are looking for inspiration and motivation, I would go. Whether or not you bring your family, I guess would depend on their interest in the event.

I agree with Kathleen on the banquet.  I went to the one in Lake Placid with a BT group and my wife had a friend up and they did their own thing.  Florida I skipped as it wasn't convenient for me to attend the dinner.  I tried to catch the post dinner presentations, but it was standing room only and difficult to hear.

For a first timer, I think it is a very good thing to attend.  If it is just you and your wife, maybe bring her along, but if the rest of the family has a better option they should take it.

Surprisingly I feel like I did an IM yesterday!  Surprised  Actually other than the usually chaffing and sore legs, I think I will be back at it in a few days.  A long walk isn't nearly as taxing as a long walk! Embarassed

I am still trying to figure out the nutritional issue but I am leaning away from it being the race plan as I am still dealing with a sour stomach and lack of appetite.  I am wondering if the banana half I ate had spent too much time in the sun?

How is everyone else doing today?

Thanks,

Great job on the training, and good luck with the thyroid/fatigue issue. I can't imagine battling that through IM training, since the training is taxing already! I am putting the final touches on my IM preparation checklist--it is REALLY extensive because it doubles as a packing list, but I'll share it later this week, for what it's worth.

Ken, looking forward to reading your race report!

And here's my final pre-race blog. I'm so excited for my race this weekend, I can't believe it's here! I rented a myathletelive tracker, so I'll try to post the link to it here if anyone is interested in following (or checking in on me Sunday evening/night).

MY HM yesterday went really well!!! PR'd the event by over a minute and negative split the race by a few seconds. Not bad considering I had one of my largest run volumes last week and had no taper! Feeling good today with only a little leg fatigue! Back at it this week with a 15 mile long run!

Morning folks!

I have the option of an easy ride today or another rest day.  I am pretty sure I couldn't lift my leg onto the bike, so rest day it will be.  Tomorrow an easy swim so that is probably a better way to ease back into the training.

We have a lot of big races coming up in the next few weeks!  Looking forward to that!

Hey Ken,
My training is going OK overall. Thanks for asking. I had my longest training week two weeks ago with a total of 17.25 hours of training. I think that is the most training that I have ever done in a week. Unlike the last two IMs that I did, I am a bit worried about making the cut offs as this course is certainly more challenging. I don't have any wiggle room during this race like I did in AZ and FL so I can't have any swim issues or bike issues this time I think I am due a decent swim after dealing with hypothermia and sea sickness but you never know. Weather conditions will play a big factor. I am sorry I have been MIA. Along with training, we adopted "Wally" our foster dog and he has been very high maintenance with medical issues. I just run out of time by the end of the day.
I am ready to have some down time after WI. It will be the first time in a few years that I don't have to train through the fall.
I hope everyone is doing well and I will do my best to keep up with the posts for the rest of the season.
Kathleen

Glad to hear Kathleen!  No worries on the checking in, I know the time commitments that IM requires and there are only so many minutes in the day.

Although it has been a few years since my last IMFL, the following year I did a late season marathon so I know what you are saying about finishing the season earlier.  One of the reasons I am thinking about IMCHOO instead of another trip to Florida in 2014.  But first, I have to decide if I am going to do another full next year or something different.

Keep up the great training, you will do fine in WI!

Hello all --- IM finisher here!! I did it - I still can't believe it. My pie in the sky goal was 13:30 and I came in at 13:26. Long day but totally worth it. Will post a full race report once I get home (enjoying some actual vacation time in Vermont).

If I can pass on one piece of advice -- Have a plan A B C ........Z. So many things I hadn't planned on went "wrong" sort of speak - very choppy water on the swim, stomach didn't really want any solids on the bike and my left calf seized up (stone calf would be an understatement!) walking the final 7 miles of the marathon was not in the plan!

But just remember your training and why you're doing this and all will work itself out! I wanted to give up at mile 85 of the bike fighting a strong headwind, but by mile 3 of the run - I felt like I could fly. It's a long day so just go with the flow.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend (I know Becky has IMLouisville and IMWI is around the corner).

Ken, it sounds like you pushed through a good race despite all the troubles! Good job and thanks for the inspiration!!
Robin, congrats on the PR, especially on well-used legs!! Keep up the hard work!
Maggie, you are an Ironman! Congrats on finished under your goal! Can't wait to read the full report!

I am trying to get back into a normal routine of things. My Dad ended up in the hospital last week. It made things just a bit hectic, trying to see him and my Mom, dealing with life and 2 scheduled meeting at church that I could not skip, and still trying to get in some training. He is home now and on the mend, so all is good. Last week was supposed to be a build week, but we modified it and pushed things back a week. So, we will see how things go this week. I think that I have 15 1/2 hours of training scheduled which is definitely my biggest week yet! Wish me luck!

I was going out to ride my bike last week, and went to put on my helmet. When I buckled it, I thought the straps felt kinda funny on my ears, so I took it off and looked at it. Oh my gosh, it is so gross and disgusting! The straps were rather hard and crusty from sweat, and they are covered with little black dots? Anybody have any good methods for cleaning it? I am not sure what the black is, but I am thinking mold? Maybe it is time for a new helmet? My birthday is coming up...

Happy training!
