Diet Coke is a horrible addiction to kick.  I've been trying for two months now!  I think it's so hard because it allows me to feel like I'm having a "treat" without having any calories.  But I know the aspartame is not doing my body any good, so it needs to go.

I know how hard it is to kick the Diet Coke habit. I have been trying to kill the habit for two years. I think I have licked it and then "fall off the wagon" again It's like a drug.... gotta have that fix.

I'm down to about 10 oz or less per day. Weekends are the worst. It's too easy to reach in the fridge for just a "hit". The headache after two days of no DC is killer, even with coffee. I don't know what it is. I can drink a ton of coffee and still have the headache. Drink one glass of DC and the headache is gone in 45 min. What do they put in there?! Slowly cutting back on how much I'm drinking each day.

Today, so far NONE. Just water for lunch.

I just a bit of digging on Wikipedia about aspartame. This stuff is really, really bad for you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame
From Wikipdeia
"Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into several residual chemicals, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and further breakdown products including formaldehyde, formic acid, and a diketopiperazine."

The part about it becoming formaldehyde is most disturbing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formaldehyde
Read this, it is most disturbing!

Even more incentive not to drink Diet Coke.

I hate to admit this but I was addicted (or thought I was) to Cheez-its for a couple of years and I couldn't break the habit.  It consumed me.  I had two small bowls every night while I watched Law & Order.  All day I would think about when I could go home, get in my pjs, sit in my chair that rocks a little, watch L&O, and eat my cheez-its. It was a bit crazy. Anyway, it was difficult to break but I had a friend who does hypnosis and she hypnotized (sp) me and we talked about cheez-its and fatty salty foods in general and I haven't eaten them since.  I often think about them when I pass them at the store but I haven't bought another box yet.

It feels good to talk about it   Seriously, though, It was very hard to kick such a stupid habit. I'm assuming it's what crack is like to kick.  I had to go get outside help. GEEZ!

I think I'm going to print out this info from Wikipedia and hang it on the wall at work.  Every time I reach for a DC, I'll look at this description of aspartame and be DISGUSTED!!  Thanks msailer!

People CAN break down small amounts of formaldehyde - like the amount that you would ingest by drinking Diet Coke.  It's much more than that and you get problems.

I had a bad aspartame incident while training for my second mary.  Drank diet pepsi non stop and on a few runs I would have my forehead, lips and part of my hands go numb.  After much research and testing the doc decided that it was related to the diet pop, seems sometimes aspartame when sitting on shelves, especially in extreme heat, changes its properties and ingesting large amounts of it can cause some weird stuff to happen to the body.

Who knows if it was the case but I dropped the DP and the symptoms went away.

That's why I drink regular cherry pepsi

hmmm.... interesting.

The only interesting experience I have had so far is a bad reaction to something with Chinese food. The last two times I had it, I ended up in the hospital within a few hours with kidney stones. I havent exactly met many people with that problem Ron met one guy who said his wife had similar experiences, so I dont feel as alone anymore.

Take a look at the chemicals that aspartame breaks down into when warmed, even as low as our body temp. Most are posion and would have some very bad symptoms.

Methanol is also used as a solvent, and as an antifreeze in pipelines and windshield washer fluid.
Gee, dogs/cat will die if they drink anti-freeze. They like it because it is sweet tasting.

The principal use of formic acid is as a preservative and antibacterial agent in livestock feed. Also, It is the active ingredient in some brands of household limescale remover.

Formaldehyde-based solutions are used in embalming to disinfect and temporarily preserve human remains. Formaldehyde is classified as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Formaldehyde is converted to formic acid in the body, leading to a rise in blood acidity (acidosis).

Formic acid - In nature, it is found in the stings and bites of many insects of the order Hymenoptera, mainly ants.

Trixie, do you happen to be allergic to bee bites?

Sorry to harp on this, but I never realized that one simple sweetner, would turn into a toxic pool of chemicals once ingested.

I have a nasty reaction but not anaphylactic shock like I do with morphine.

I sucked all weekend long.  First a long car ride... never good for me on the eating front.  Including fast food.  Both ways.  Sigh.

Then I hit cramps and sooper cravings - while at my mom's.  Yeah, she babied me.  So I ate crap AND didn't work out.

Whoever said it's lots of little choices is totally right.  I'm not winning this challenge, but I might win a few battles in this war before I'm done.

Working verrrrrry late tonight and working even harder to avoid snacking. MUST. NOT. EAT. CRAP.

I already scored a victory tonight. I turned down yummy chocolate chip cookies at rehearsal tonight. How do I know they're yummy? Well, I just do. These are things I know. You can judge a cookie based on appearances, you know. I guess that makes me a cookie bigot.

Wow, I have had similar symptoms on my long runs. Did you ever get really bad cramping in your hands or feet. The diet soda in my house is stored in a place that gets very warm.
