marq - 2009-06-25 12:30 PM You might call the Bike Barn in Penticton.  I have rented from them in the past, although not for race day.

Having done the race 4x and trained on the bike course a number of times, I wouldn't ride a disk on that course.  The swirling crosswinds on the descent from Richter and on the descent from Yellow Lake can be very tricky on a windy day.  YMMV

Wow. . .   No disc, huh? ? ?  That's a great thought.  When I was in Louisville last year, that was the first time I had ever used carbon race wheels.  I have to say, going down hill, or having a good cross wind really caused me to grip tighter.  So I will have to think about this.

Problem is, I'd like to use my PowerTap for the race, and I'd like to get a bit more aero.  Not that it is gonna help me all that much.  I'm only looking to break 12 hours, so my benefit might not be that much anyway.

Thanks for the thoughts. . .

I agree that the winds can be swirling coming off of Yellow Lake, and in fact the most frightened I've ever been on a bike was on that descent in swirling winds where I was getting pushed from one side of the road to the other, but that was due to a deep front wheel.

I've raced the course twice with a disc and will be running either a disc cover or disc this year as well.

Gulp! ... actually, doing OK, I think. I'll have a better idea after trying a half IM this coming weekend. /*fingers crossed*/

I finally booked my flights. Into Kelowna on Thursday.  Will be driving to Vancouver the Monday after race for a little R&R.

Tricky finding a hotel this late.  Still stuff available, but they want 5 day min.  I found some hotel that I can't find anything about (plaza motel), so it's probably a dump, but it's in Penticton.  I'll probably keep looking or stay an extra day and book 5 days somewhere.

My training is on track.  Ran a mary last weekend.  Did a 120 mile ride yesterday.  Can do 1x4500m in the pool.  I should be set if I don't overtrain and recover okay from Vineman.

So completed my HIM in 6 hours! Felt good on the swim and bike, but man the run just absolutely killed me! My legs were dead and I ended up walking a portion of run (didnt help that it was about 90 degrees as well). So I have an idea of what I need to be working on (bricks) but wanted to see how others folks were coming along.

Unfortunately, most of the hotels in the area need work- and most of the others fill up a year in advance. People literally check out and request a room for the following year. And because hotels know the demand is there due to IMC and because it is a big summer tourist spot, they manage to get away with over-charging and asking for a 5 night min. Even the campgrounds have the 5 night min. You might also try looking at a room in a private home/condo. Good luck with the hunt!

Donato, I have no doubt that you will be absolutely solid for this race!

Congrats on the HIM! Do be mindful that temps in Penticton can easily be in the 90's though the past two years have been on the cooler side. So don't shy away from training in the heat-certainly no shortage of that in TX!

Sadly my training is suffering due to a stress fracture that doesn't want to heal itself. I haven't been running since May- yikes!- other than in the water. I have been trying to get in lots of swimming and riding though. I come from a running background so the coach and Sports MD aren't ready to pull the plug for the race as they think I can still be ready. DH is doing the Desert HIM in Osoyoos this weekend so I will be able to ride the course and do some more OWS (of which I need A LOT of help).

Hope everyone else's training is coming along!

Congrats on your HIM!

FWIW running well in an IM is all about bike fitness, proper bike pacing, and nutrition.

Carmi motel. If you're looking for the Ritz, go else where. We stayed here last year, mostly because they take dogs, which we have one but 1) it is a 20 minute walk to the race start (2 minute drive if my wife is behind the wheel!) 2) it is cheap! I'm paying $130 a night for a 4 person suite 3) they have only a 5 night minimum and 4) did I mention it's cheap?. I know $130 ain't cheap for a "motel" and sure as heck ain't cheap for a motel in Penticton but what's an athlete going to do? Sorry, I am too sleepy to dig up the number, but there is a 1 800 # if you google "CARMI PENTICTON WILD AND HOT BABES." Kidding, but let me know what that comes up with and maybe I'll stay at your place! I jsut talked to them yesterday and she told me they had a few rooms available, good luck, again it is not a pretty place so don't yell at me if you don;t like it.

Oh and as a side note..if you do stay at the Carmi Inn.*ahem* if you have your bike on the roof of your vehicle and uhhh, if your bike measures higher than 8'4", do not try to drive under the walkway that reaches over the driveway. Especially don't do this as you are driving down to drop you bike off at transition 14 hours before the cannon goes off. I uhhhh, know a guy, that heard something like that may have happened last year to some guy. *ahem*

You can check here for listings but mostly are houses or condos or the like.

We just found our place a month or so ago by searching different links on line and ended up finding something perfect for my family on the run course and near the bike course, 3 bedrooms, for the 6 of us that are coming.

Happy weekend guys!

LOL, well actually, since it was my wife that was behind the wheel at the time I did have permission to go get whatever I wanted.....the repairs were minimal and the bike was still ridable, nuts!

6 weeks from today we'll be out there racing

How is everyone's training going?

My training is going well. My long runs are creeping up as are my long rides. I'm running more than I ever have and feel more durable which I'm happy with.

I have my biggest week in my build next week followed by a recovery week and a strange distance sort of Oly race on the 2nd.

Hi Kathy.  Glad to hear your training is going well.  It'll be here before we know it!

Mine has been going very well too, although I'm borderline overtrained.  I've done two 120 mile rides already this month (one yesterday) and I should top 700 for the month.  I ran a marathon three weeks ago.  I'm tapering for the next two weeks leading up to Vineman full (I'm really looking forward to cutting back on the training...I'm beat).  I figure that gives me 2 weeks to recover, a training weekend two weeks before Canada, and then taper.  Yeah, I'm insane.

So just trying to get some wheel & cassette recommendations, seems like some different opinions out there. I recently rode a 100 mile race with 808's F&R and also found that I was getting blown about, while a friend rode same race with a 404F and Disc and said everything was fine, so I am not sure what to go with.

I am running a standard 53/39 crankset with 11/23 cassette and am concerned that I may need a 12/27... is this a general concensus for the hills ?

Probably best to share what your expected bike split might be so others around your speed will chime in.

Hills are always power/weight ratio.

Never ridden the IMC course before so hard to know what bike split will be, but my recent 100 miler was 4h56, with the first 50 in 2h13 and the return leg in 4h43... uphill with a headwind :-( So am hoping for around 5h30, which may well prove to be optimistic...

Just wondering if people who have ridden the bike course want to share their thoughts on the hills/mountains. Being out in ontario I'm not going to get a chance to ride the route prior to. I've driven the route numerous times (used to live out there) but its a different perspective when your on a bike versus in a car. Also regarding the run, I'm trying to remember, is the middle portion of the route hilly (short steep type hills)?
