I am doing lots of hills right now in Base 1a (custom plan), although it's still mostly in Z2.  For example, my plan has things like hill repeats on the bike seated overgeared but Z2, focused on technique and run hills with HR build into Z3 on up but back to Z2 on down and flat.  My races prior to LP are also hilly.

Today is rainy here and I have a 4-hour ride scheduled; I figure it's homage to last year's LP racers.  Hoping I don't drown.

Lake placid would be called a 'rolling hiils' course by cyclists... they would laugh that we think it's hilly. It is, but not as bad as it is made out to be. The climb out of Jay is the steepest and hardest, but the long climb is gradual and requires discipline... not great hill-climbing skills.

Black Bear is MUCH more hilly. That HIM was a killer for me. Doing hills before Placid is not a bad idea... just don't psych yourself out more than you need to as it is hillier in the mind than in reality.

Great.  I'm signed up for Black Bear, and I just loooooove hearing you say it was a killer for you.

I saw a LOT of people walking their bikes up some of the grades... fun....

This is one reason I'm sticking with my triple.

Hey everyone. I got screwed this week when I called to put my deposit down on the place I had been planning to stay since last year. I was told to wait until January to give my deposit. WELL, my reservation was forgotten about and given away.

So now I'm scrambling to find a place for me and my 6 family members to stay. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone still looking themselves? I have found some big places (sleeps 22, etc etc) thats way outta my price range but would love to share housing if anyone's interested.

I see that some of you are signing up for Black Bear.  Wish I could but I am not able to travel that far from where I currently live for that weekend.  But is anyone thinking about doing "Tinman" in Tupper Lake?  I hear it is more low key, similar to the Vermont Half Journey.  Has anyone raced Tinman, and if so, what did you think?  In my town I believe there are only 6 or so persons I can talk to about Ironman training/racing, and they are split on the Tinman.

I did Tinman the past 2 years. Yep - it's low-key. Nice quality race. I'd recommend it in and of itself.

However...

A veteran racer told me to forget about it this year - felt the race date was too close to LP.

I did Tinman last two years also.  Make sure you have tinted googles for the 2nd half of the swim, the sun is right in you eyes as you look up.   The bike has rolling hill mosly in the beginning and right at the end, still nice course (out and back).  The run was very flat with lots of support the only down fall was last year I did not see mile markers after mile 6 on the run.  I did not know how much I had left.  I thought it was a little unorganized with regards to results and awards.    Overall fun race with great views of the adirondacks.

Do you think "Tinman" is too close to LP?  I have not completed an IM but I could definately race two HIM's within that time frame....but again, I am new to the IM distance, and unsure how the body will handle.

Good points PennState.  I have never been injury prone, and I probably will not go all out.  I was hoping to use the race for a pacing effort for my bike/run.  I am also looking to try a couple different wheelsets out, and this race may be a good way to do that in a race environment.

IMO, you will be better off by doing IM-specific training that weekend.  Go do a 6 hour ride and a 30-45 min run.  Much better for testing your pacing, nutrition and equipment.  There are people who do the Tupper/IMLP combo, so it certainly can be done.  But it's probably best not to try it your first time out at the IM distance.

Thank you so much for volunteering.  1st bike aid station, I’ll have to remember that and give you a holler.  Without people like yourself there wouldn’t be a race.  Thanks again!

btw... I love GA peaches!  They taste the best.

What is the total feet ascent for the full LP bike course?  Anyone got a Garmin file of the bike course?  Thanks

Forerunner has cr@p elevation.  Edge is more accurate.  Here's a motionbased entry using an Edge, 6850 feet elevation

Thanks.  I’ve heard 6000 ft before so that rings a bell.

PennState - 2009-02-11 3:48 PM
Garmin tends to over-estimate the elevation. 6000' total gain for the 112 miles is the best ST guess I've heard.

My Garmin Edge 305 seems pretty accurate.  I have retraced some of my ride course via mapmyride.com and Google earth.  Now the grades seem a bit off, but then again I guess it depends on the satellites.

Thanks.  That’s quite a difference from 6000 ft.

Remember, what goes up must go down. Look at the MAX speed....47mph!

I have a 2 freinds who both have raced IM florida and Lake Placid. They both felt that Florida was slightly more difficult. Both of them are top age groupers. Their reasoning is that with pancake flat florida you will go "Balls to the Wall" for the whole 112. Whereas with Lake Placid you can pace the climbs and recover on the downhills. I dont know if I agree...we will see how much the hills beat me up.
