We haven't started looking at places since registration day. Plus, now we need to find somewhere that is dog-friendly. Thoughts? If I recall correctly, some folks here booked at Northwoods with their dogs. Not sure if they have anything available, a lot of places were already booked up the day after the race, but will have openings in the spring. |

Extreme Veteran 643 Connecticut | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread tasr - 2009-09-30 5:02 PM jamesG, Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to flam you or anything. Did you raced IMLP or finished? If you say IMWI bike was a harder to race than IMLP, do you refer to this by HR, RPE or power? If you posted this before maybe I missed it so sorry for that. I find it hard to believe you would find IMWI bike harder than LP. I understand for you it was and respect it. For 2011 I am looking at either IMWI or IMFL. I would also like to do IMCD and IMCN.
Hey - Your post doesn't across as trying to flame at all and it is a fair question: I raced Wisconsin on Power and have ridden the LP 112 mile course 3 times in training on power. Wisconsin on Race day 6:02hrs I had a 311TSS and rode as easy as I could I have never ridden Placid higher than 290 TSS. Canada I rode 275TSS 5:36bike split. The thing that makes Wisconsin harder in my opinion than Placid or at the very least slower is the number of turns there are ~approx 90 turns on Wisconsin works out approx a turn every 1.5miles a significant number of these turns are 90 degree right angled turns which slows you right down and then you climb again very steeply for a short period with no momentum. At Placid you have about 4 turns per loop i.e. you are very seldom losing momentum also at Wisconsin on the lollipop loops there is no real long flat stretch apart from a couple of miles into Verona where you are on the flats Placid has the nice section from Keene to Jay and the out and back. That Hazelton climb is a Biotch though.. I just did a very quick search in Slow Twitch on the subject see posts below. Interesting seems about half and half think Wis harder and Placid harder. It seems to me it is based on weather you like technical or long grinding hills. For me I am a pretty big guy 6'3 @ 178lbs on race day and ride off 280 1 hour thresehold power or 3.5watts per kilo a big steep course like Placid/Canada with long areas of flats interspersed by big rollers is perfect as I don't suffer a weight penalty on the climbs I can just spin up them but can really hammer the rollers and the flats given my overall high FTP. I am guessing a little guy 5'10 160lbs with say a 230FTP 3.7watts per kilo is going to prefer Wisconsin as they are going to fly up the short really steep hills easier and not get penalised due to the lack of long flat stretchs which benefit higher FTP riders IOW the ability to drive a big gear on the flats...Think Cancerella vs Sasstre in the Tour... Hope that answers your question and makes sense?

Yep it's pretty darn expensive once you get there too...food is much more expensive than US....lodging is not quite as high as Lake Placid but close. Not easy to get there either....but it is a great venue. I'd like to go back. |

Member 29 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Hi BT-ers. I'm heading up to LP this weekend for a training/R&R weekend. I plan on riding the bike course (one loop with or without the out-and-back depending on time constraints) and maybe jogging some of the run. Any suggestions on other things to do/check out while I'm up there (either in preparation for the race or just in general)? This will be my first trip to the Lake Placid area. Thanks. |

Do the out & back. If you're going to go up, might as well be able to leave for the weekend knowing the entire course. Take your wetsuit. Bouys are always up. I debated trying to go up this weekend but i think i'm going to shoot for the weekend of the 24th. |

We have eaten there every time we have gone to LP and will do so in 2010. |

Member 29 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Thank you all for the suggestions. We'll check out those restaurants and I'll do the out and back if at all possible. Another purpose of the trip is to find a place to stay during race week. If we stay outside of Lake Placid, are there issues with getting to the race area on Sunday? Will all the roads into LP be closed? Is there an area from which my family would be able to go back and forth on race day? Thanks again. |

Why I'm cracking up is when i originally typed that, i wrote 'of all the places jorge & i ate, our favorite was....' and i changed it to just my opinion! but yes, it sure is. You had that salad w/ the ahi tuna & i had the crab cake salad. If i go up the weekend of 10/24 i'm definitely going there! |

KathyG might be a good resource on that as I think she stayed slightly out of town and i believe her family typically travels with her. I love Art Devlin's Olympic Motor Inn. It's in a great location, about 2 blocks from transition, and right on the run course. It's about as inexpensive as you're going to find for hotels right on the main drag. I think next year it's $200/night w/ a 5 night minimum. I stayed there for Jorge's training camp, and then was there again for the race. Only downside is no kitchen. The trade off of being in town was worth it to me b/c we pretty much didn't drive anywhere. If you don't know where you're staying this weekend, check that place out! |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I tried to book Art Devlin's because I stayed there with Jenn (gopennstate) and also liked it very much but the day after the race I was number 75 on the wait list. They said they get openings but he wasn't optimistic 74 rooms would drop off so I couldn't take the risk and wait. I had to book at Northwoods and I'm staying there in a few weeks so I'll get a little preview. I've heard mixed things, but the location is really great so it should be fine. I'll post here about what it's like. I can't wait to get up there and ride that course again! |

This is true, but to anyone who still needs housing, don't be afraid to put your name on the waiting lists at places. I got into Art Devlins late April last year b/c of cancellations, people on the waiting list had booked elsewhere, etc. Lots of BTers are also staying at Northwoods it seems. Both hotels are only a couple blocks apart. |

BTW I will have a bike that will be about 4.5 lbs lighter than last year and I plan on being about 5.5 lbs lighter. I did and indeed I got excited. I am ready to work on weaknesses, yet still having fun. I won't get into IM focused training until Jan and I will continue to enjoy cyclo cross racing which I am enjoying so much but for sure I am beginning to itch about it ie; I plan on going FASTER on the bike and the run Anybody else watch Kona and start to think about LP yet? |

Extreme Veteran 398 Sea Isle City, NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I am back on the bandwagon and officially motivated again. I had surgery on Friday to my right knee as it has been a nagging injury all year and has prevented me from competing. There was a 50-50 chance it was articular cartilage damage and would require microfracture which would put IMLP in serious jeaopardy. Woke up to find the only damage was to the meniscus and had it shaved back. Should be able to swim and light cycling later in the week with full recovery in 4-6 weeks. Man am I happy. IMLP will be my second IM as I did this same race in the monsoon of 2008. First goal is as always to finish. I would like to try and cut close to an hour off my last time and race 10lbs lighter. Life is good. I think my wife would have kicked me out of the house if I had to be on crutches for 8 weeks (microfracture). See you all up there. Good luck. |

To be quiet honest I don't know for sure how much training I'll do or be able to do by Jan. I will be working on a few things between now and then; I am planning to run everyday between Oct 1st and Dec 31st to log time under my legs. How long or hard will vary based on how my legs feel but so far just running at least 20-30min a day until Nov 1st. In terms of cycling I am doing cross racing hence I am riding 2-4x week doing around 40-60 min @ threshold power and as of Nov 1st do the winter cycling program avg 4 rides x week as 3 intense and one long. No swimming as I am nursing a shoulder injury. Hopefully back in the pool by Jan. Basically this off-season I'll be working on my limiters while keeping my training fun (do what I feel like doing without a rigid structure day in day out.) By Jan I'll start with a defined structured plan and work little by little building up on IM specific training, that is doing lots of steady/tempo long sessions. Volume/intensity will vary each month (based on fitness) but if I could build to avg for May and June something like 50-60K swim, 600-700 Mi Bike and 120-140 Mi run I'll be a happy camper... |
