Master 3546 Millersville, MD | Subject: RE: Improve your cycling power over the winter. I did this last year and fell off the wagon at some point. The workouts are HARD, which I think is the idea... need to have the right attitude to like the pain! I'm back in this year. All of that said, I was very pleased when reading the original post here that this plan is now for those interested in improving their cycling over the WEEKEND!!!! Jorge I'll do whatever you want if you can give me 15-20% increase over the weekend. You may be planning to do this more once the plan starts, but I'm curious what you will be changing from last year's plan, and your rationale behind it. I have an out-of-season goal of increasing my run mileage with LOTS (7-10) of shorter LSD runs (approximately 1 hour for most of them) each week. I'm planning almost zero speed in them (maybe one LT session of a half hour or so every other week). My gut feeling is that I can handle both activities, but was hoping you'd agree. Also, what would you say is an appropriate baseline level of bike fitness to start your plan? Thanks. Josh |

I used a ct for this last year and personally think that programming Jorge's workouts into .erg files is the best way to do them. There is no slacking. You hit the full prescribed wattage for all of every interval or you stop. |

Master 1572 PA | Subject: RE: Improve your cycling power over the winter. trinewby - 2009-10-17 6:14 PM Jorge, Will it be possible to use the program on a delayed basis? I would like to start the program sometime around or right after Christmas because I don't want to overlap the cycling program with the marathon training program I am doing for a Dec. 12th marathon. It will be my first marathon and I am putting in more miles running than I have ever done in my life. I think your training sessions were archived and remained available last year, weren't they? Thanks, Greg answer...if Jorge does the same as last year, they will stay up so you could start whenever you want. I believe last year's plans are still there. http://jorgepbmcoaching.blogspot.com/ |

Expert 977 Huntington Beach | Subject: RE: Improve your cycling power over the winter. Now with my first two sprint tris behind me I need to get stronger on the bike. I am excited for the help. I see everyone saying they will do this program on a trainer. I don't have one. Do I need it or can I ride outside (sunny SoCal)? Also, what is a PM? Bottom line...I have a bike and it has some type of computer thing on it that tells me my speed/miles. What else do I need? Excited to try! |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: Improve your cycling power over the winter. Sorry for the late responses folks but I wasn't around BT much over the weekend; I was busy getting my ar$$ kicked racing cyclocross Let me reply to some of the questions: 1. Yes you can follow the plan on a computrainer, just program it into erg mode and enjoy the pain. 2. yes you can follow the plan riding outside; the problem is to find a road that will allow you do the intervals. 3. Yes you can do this on a spinning bike (or similar), just do it by RPE and adjust resistance to match the adviced intensity 4. Yes you should be able to mix this with swim and run training. The focus will be to increase power through 1 hr intense sessions 3-4x a week leaving you time to do plenty of swim/run. I am doing a run focus running every day until Dec 31st so I'll just do two a days. 5. Plan will be updated from last year; after doing the plan and getting feedback I think I can make the progression even better and get greater power gains. 6. The old plan will remain on my plan and the new one will be uploaded every week. Sessions can be done every other day. If you fuel properly you should be able to recover no problem. 7. If you have a coach talk to him/her to see if the plan would match your goals/plans 8. You can start the plan anytime you want, If you have other races or still on Tri season then get started after you recover, for the rest starting Nov 1st will set us ahead of the fitness gains without investing too much time training. The point is to invest at least 3 hrs x week, train very hard and have plenty of time to do other stuff, enoy the holidays, relax a bit from structured crazy volume training, etc. 9. Each session will be intense hence even when you might want to have some entertainment (music, movies, etc) *if* you are pushing at the right intensity you'll be to focused on blocking the pain and not that much on the rest Let me know if you have more Qs or if I failed to respond something... |

I think our prepwork should include searching drugstores for the best deal on value-sized ibuprofen. I have this image in my head of the drill sergeants from "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Full Metal Jacket" both screaming at me. |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Improve your cycling power over the winter. This season, I feel like I finally took full advantage of my PM and made some good gains. It'll be interesting to see what kind of improvements I can pile on top with this. This past spring at the Lonestar 1/2, I was at 186 watts NP, which was good for the 7th fastest split in my AG (of course, that was after doing the sprint at 203 watts the day before). At Longhorn this week-end, I'm planning on hitting about 205-210 watts NP. I'm not sure how much room I still have to improve, but if I can get that NP number to 220 or so for Lonestar, I should fly with that flat course and my aggressive position. Looking forward to it! |

I'm in using wattage since the trainer calculates and records it for me. Plus I want to get fast enough to justify buying a Cervelo P3. Having to work to be good enough for your bike is a heck of a motivator! |
