Mike, thank you for posting that list of usernames and real names.  You Rock!!!    I was hoping to get to it today, but I spent the day digging out!

Chava, have you checked the Olympic plans right here on Beginner Triathlete?

As for the Assignment, the Plan I am following is Don Fink's Be IronFit Intermediate program.  I am signed up for IMUSA, LP ... I had to sign up for that back in July, but once I get paid this Friday I am going to sign up for Rev3 Half in June, and I am also going to sign up for two road races in March: Kings Park 15k and the Suffolk County Half.

Ted, we'll definitely meet up at the KP 15k or Suffolk County Half.

George, Gatjr33 thanks for offering feedback.

My assignment:

A)  I'm signed up for:

  • Celebration Sprint Triathlon (1k swim, 19.5 mi bike, 3.4 mile run)  "B" race tune up (6/26/11)
  • Diamond-in-the-Rough Triathlon (1 mi swim, 26 mi bike, 5 mi run)  "A-" race (7/9/11)
  • North East Olympic Triathlon (1.5k swim, 26 mi bike, 10k run)  "A" race (8/14/11)

I'll probably throw in some running races here and there throughout the season, and maybe one of those indoor tri things in March.  I'm also doing the Baltimore Half Marathon in October.

I MIGHT get really crazy and do the Delaware Diamondman HIM distance in September...we'll see how these Olympics go!  It doesn't sell out until August usually so I have plenty of time to decide.

B)  Current plan is Basic Olympic program that I am miserably failing to follow.  I'm about to bag the plan completely and focus hard on swimming.  I start the 26-week, Intermediate 2-race Olympic program from BT mid-February, which ends in August.  I'll then either focus on the HM or HIM, whichever is first.  My Olympic plan does more volume than the basic HIM plan, so I should be all set regardless of what I choose.  Now I just gotta follow it!

Oh, and I need a road bike soon...probably looking in May.

How's everyone's training week going?

Today is looking more and more like a rest day due to a busy schedule.

I'm thinking of taking tomorrow off from work *cough cough*  and spending some time at the pool, then heading over to the gym for some strength work and treadmilling.

I'm going to save that time off for later this spring, when it's 75 degrees out and I have a 3 1/2 hour bike ride to do!

This week was a wreck due to being sick but looking forward to get back in the pool next week.  Nice swim Tuesday, by the way!

I am taking a day off today also - I have been good all week and am planning to do "Murph" workout at Crossfit Sat morning. Several of the workouts are named after our fallen soldiers and this one has a reputation as being brutal.....

Timed workout
1 mile run
100 pullups
200 pushups
300 squats
1 mile run

I am kinda intimidated by it....hope everyone hasn't gone home if  before I can finish it

this week I swam twice
1400 yds each swim, did about 1000 yds non stop and then did some with paddles, buoys and sprints

lifted wts twice

will try to ride Saturday morning and will try to get up tomorrow morning to run. But it's been really hard to get up in the morning to run.  By the itme I get home, eat dinner with family and get the kids to bed, i really don't want to go out and run since it's wife time.

so hopefully with the new baby, i'll be up earlier in the morning so gotta run

Hey!  Sorry to have been so silent.  Work has taken over my life - all leading up to today but I guess it was worth it as it was a very successful day.  Unfortunately now it seems I have caught some cold which knowing my luck and the nature of my coughing will turn in to bronchitis!!  Sucks!  If feeling better I think I'll have some great opportunities to RUN and cycle this weekend!  I never thought I'd miss my runs but ya... hoping to get one in if child care pans out.  Hope everyone else is doing well.

How's everyone's training week going?

It was slow going earlier in the week due to work and this cold that seems to have grabbed on to me. However, I got a decent run in on the treadmill yesterday and I feel the need for a three day training block. Plan to get a swim in today with some strength work, and then some quality time with my trainer this weekend. Should end up being a pretty good week.

Training is going well!

I have been lifting weights 3-4 times a week at lunch time (30 minute slot), but I am thinking of scaling back the weight lifting to 1 or 2 sessions a week so I can use that time to run or bike.  What do you think?

Finally starting to feel some conditioning coming back.  I have been laying low since finishing IM WI last fall and slacking over the holidays.  Time to get back at it. First mini brick of the year for me today, 45 minute spin class, weights(legs) followed by a 3 mile run.  Felt good.

Weight training.  First year of doing a more structured weight training routine over the winter.  Primarily focusing on the legs, squats, extensions, curls, etc.  Wondering if others have also used this approach and if they noticed any benefits during the following season?

Overall fitness right now is coming along, slowly.  Big picture my lungs are way ahead of my legs, hope this makes sense to everyone.

Happy weekend everyone!  90 minutes of Birkam Yoga hell on tap for me today.  My wife bought a Groupon for the place so it's money already spent (I actually like it...but don't tell anyone).

Oh, and GO RAVENS!!!

I might end up in the ER if I did that workout!!  WoW!! Good stuff though.

HEY, I was watching the Austin Swim Nationals on Universal Sports last night.  It was weird to see olympians swimming way off their PR times and many just plain looked out of shape.  The announcer commented on it and said that everyone's focus was London Olympics 18 months out, and this meet was kind of their starting point -- kind of like January is our starting point for the mid-Spring and summer Races.  It just made me feel good to know that even elite olympians have to start from somewhere and are not always in top shape and form.

Well today's workout didn't go exactly as planned but it was a workout nonetheless

Ended up as
1 mile run
50 pullups
100 pushups
150 squats
1 mile run

time 39:01

I feel incredible right now - almost surreal - completely drained but on cloud 9 at the same time. Looking forward to a relaxing evening! Planning a nice bike ride tomorrow.

Hope everyone's weekend is going well - we have some nice weather today mid 60's and back into the 70's for the upcoming week - Loving it!

January Assignment

Okay everyone.  Here is this month's assignment.  Many of you may have completed this already, or have half of it done, but I am strong suggesting we ALL have this accomplished by the end of this MONTH! So we have plenty of time between now and January 31st.

A.Book a Destination.  Sign up for a Spring/Summer race.  Sprint tri, 5k road race, Olympic ... no matter the race or distance you must "Pay" for it in full and add it to your BT Calendar.  If you need help picking a race, or adding it to your BT blog, just ask.  Also, if you need help picking a Blog Title, think of something that includes that Race title!!!  This way you will see it everyday and it will help to keep that destination/goal in front of you constantly.  Like they say, Keey your eye on the prize.

B.) Get a Road Map to the Destination.  In other words, pick and commit to a plan.  If you don't have a plan, ask for help.  I will help you find/devise one.  If your race isn't until late summer, myself and other group members will help you devise a "base bulding plan" to get you to the start date of your plan.

That's it.  Simple.  Book the race: by making the financial commitment it will help motivate you.  Picking a plan is a visual road map that will effectively and efficiently have you arriving at your destination in the easiest most prepared manner.

B) is the easier of the two for me.  I am using a modified version of the BT aggressive Couch to 5K to get back into running shape.  I hope to get back in the pool again in the next week of so, but will just be building endurance back up to a mile swim again for the time being.  I'll get back to working on speed later this spring.

A) I had originally planned to begin this year with a trail race in March that looked interesting.  Unfortunately, I won't be far enough along in my Cto5K training to really enjoy that one so I am looking for one now toward the end of April.  There are plenty to choose from in the Atlanta area, though, so that shouldn't be a problem.  If nothing else, I am definitely running the Warrior Dash again this year, but it's not until May.

Beginning Running

Thought I'd share a link to a very good discussion about running in general, but especially for beginners, from our local MD forum:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=238980&start=1

Lots of good stuff, especially about the difference between building swim or bike volume vs. run volume.  With run volume you are not only training your muscles and CV system, but your bones, tendons and joints as well.

Some sayings/advice I've picked up over the couple of years I've been here:

"Run.  Lots.  Mostly easy, sometimes hard."

"Speed work is icing.  You gotta make the cake first."

Ya we had about a foot of snow dump on us so far this weekend.  It's -11 right now but feels like -19 which I think for you guys is like 10 degrees.  I think my flu has finally passed but... given the local temperatures... perhaps an extra day of rest is in order   You know it's cold when your lungs burn!
