synthetic - 2011-03-11 9:17 AM no,carpooling is not an option   We need to cease the reliance on non human powered vehicles ... add in fact that break downs in the middle of no where are not fun..

They have their bikes, if they break down they can bike home right?

Or better yet call in a flat bed towtruck but give them the wrong directions so they drive all over the place before getting to you. Then by the time they have his car loaded, the tow truck is out of gas and has to call in another tow truck to bring him gas.

I thought this post was going to be about the guy next to me on the treadmill that hops on and sets it for 5:30 pace miles and lasts about 40 seconds.  Moves on to the bike and does something siimilar. Then weights etc....

You know, I do my rides from home, just to not take that additional time away from the family of loading up the bike and the drive time.  That way my 2 hour ride is a 2 hour ride, not a "3hour ride"

Grocery stores are a waste too. Grow your own food.

jsiegs - 2011-03-10 5:52 PM This thread is funny.  Here I was thinking that we Americans are the ignorant ones...

i live in the states, san diego

i bike to work with button shirt and dress pants in my bag. 20 miles each way

I bike to bars wearing my bar clothes... downtown is jsut 2 miles away.

as for groceries its jsut me and my wife.... 2 bags of veggies, 1 bag of fruit, 2 bags of meat

Mr. High-and-mighty isn't even a vegetarian!  Do you know how much of the world's resources are abused and wasted to accommodate your glutinous consumption of meat?  We'd be better off if you drove an 18-wheeler to the grocery store, left it idling while you went inside on a crowded Sunday afternoon with only one check-out line open, and skipped the meat aisle.  And you act like you're concerned about our planet.  It's carnivores like you that are sending us all to hell in a hand basket.

Ok so let's see if we can sum up the thread:

  • Training locations, no matter where they are located, are within riding or running distance
  • All roads and streets are acceptable training locations no matter how population-dense or dangerous the roads are
  • Driving to a pool is the only acceptable reason to drive anywhere
  • Taking your car to the grocery store, no matter how many groceries you need, is unnecessary and a waste of fuel
  • Car pooling is a waste of fuel

Have I about captured everything you're trying say synthetic?  I just want to make sure I'm understanding everything you're saying.

IMO you nailed it.  This is what I got from this thread.  Now what it took from me...time I could be driving to the pool.

a group bike ride is better than carpooling.  groceries are a matter of family size, if they all are non disabled adults there should be no reason for car use.

Then you shouldn't be biking to the store.  Or were you only referring to physical disabilities?

How about the 3 months of the year I can't bike anywhere due to differing amounts of snow & ice on the roads?

^^  I LOVE Oberon!!!  I can't wait for summer when it becomes available.  I'm going to jump in my car and drive to the grocery store just to pick up a case.

Get with the program, man, didn't you see that according to synthetic's rules it's okay for you to drive 100 miles away from your home to train outdoors in the winter?

Synthetic - if there's too much snow on the ground to ride my bike, am I allowed to drive to the gym and go to a spin class? I just want to make sure I have all the rules straight.... I mean, I wouldn't want to mess it up....

I disagree with this all together. There should be zero population in these colder climates. It takes to much energy for heating during the winter. No one would have to drive to thier training area because of snow. Everybody, move to Florida.
