Veteran 215 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Wow, I didn't know Syracuse was moved. That could be an option. I was eyeing up Hunter Mountain from the new HITS series too. Interested in seeing how well they put on races. http://www.hitstriathlonseries.com/hunter-mountain-ny/ |

Huntington Beach, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Oh man...first IM for me and I don't think it's fully set in yet. But I do know it's going to be one awesome adventure. Just started looking for places to stay there and been reading older posts to try and catch up. Saw a lot of people mentioning the High Peaks Resort so hopefully can get in there. G'luck to all training for it! |

Regular 124 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Triguy - Rev 3 Quassy is the one that a bunch of us did last year. Sorry, I called in Rev 3 CT in a previous post. Good hilly ride and the run is brutal. Perfect. I`ll be doign that one again for sure. Also, when i suggested that a HIM is worth doing pre IMLP, i did not mean instead of a training weekend in Placid. I meant instead or a regular long training day in "where ever your town is". A trip to Placid (or three as i did last year) is great preparation (and really just a great place to be). |

Not sure where in NOVA you are but this ride has a 2 mile 8% avg grade that was harder for me than anything I experienced at Lake Placid. If you only wanted to do the climb go to Bluemont on Rt 7 - my guess is its probably not more than a 30 minute drive from Reston/Herndon area. Marshall is about a 40 minute drive from Manassas. http://www.bikewashington.org/routes/bluerdg/index.htm Good luck! |

Veteran 208 Canton, CT | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I think I'm going to do the Newfound Lake 70.3 in NH next year as a warm up. Did the Cuse 70.3 last year and liked it but it doesn't fit well into my LP training plan as it's too close for me. I may also do the Rev 3 but haven't seen the date for it yet. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I am in for my second IMLP - first was last year. After racing a half this weekend, it re-confirmed my belief that for me anyway, a half is just not useful as preparation for a full. The pacing is different, the nutrition is different, and the toll on the body just impinges too much on critical training time leading up to the main event. Last year I did a half 9 weeks out and feel like I lost a week or maybe even 10 days of good LP-focused training. That said, I have signed up for The Mountain Madness Half in the North Georgia which is 11 weeks out from IMLP. I have signed up not because it will be good training for Lake Placid (I actually think it will be detrimental), instead I signed up just because it will be fun! I mean, how many triathlons do you get to do that feature a special "King of the Mountain" award? |

Veteran 526 Richmond | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread You guys are making me rethink my HIM strategy, I did one this year in prep for IMCDA, but I didn't race it, I went IM pace in race environment. The main thing I got out of it was knowing where I was in a race environment in terms of fitness and ultimately the confidence of feeling great on the half mary. Kinetic HIM is 10 weeks out from LP vs. 6 wks from CDA, so there is more recovery time for me this round. I hear you on the recovery time if you race it, I think if you plan a HIM as an IM race simulation, then the recovery time should be equal or less than some of the longer workouts in an IM plan. Some may have a hard time not racing it though. |

Some may have a hard time not racing it though. Yep, mdfahy, that is my problem exactly. More importantly, for me the races are so different that not much translates from one to the other. I raced the Augusta half this past weekend and it reinforced the belief that (for me anyway) a half is actually much harder than a full in many ways. Aside from the physical injuries I sustained at IMLP this past year, in no way did I feel as beat up after that race as I do today after Augusta. For me my benchmark test regarding IM fitness is instead a 5~6 hour IM paced bike followed immediately by a 15~20 minute IM paced run. Closer to IMLP I will start with a 1:10 OWS immediately before the bike, but the run-off is still really short. That tells me a lot more than a HIM raced at IM pace. In a HIM he bike is not nearly long enough to practice pacing and nutrition and the run does not have to be NEARLY so long to get an idea how your legs will respond. Your body will thank you. But like I said, that is in theory - I am still doing a difficult HIM 11 weeks out from LP. Really my only point is that it has nothing to do with my IM prep. It is just fun to race! |

Veteran 274 State College, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Had a great bike ride yesterday. Only did 15 miles in just over 50 min, but it still felt good to get back out on the road and just spin. I can't wait until this weekend to get out more and start doing real rides again.
"Some people train to race, some race to train." I'm still of the opinion that more racing is better. This summer leading up to IMLP I did 1 HIM, 1 Oly, 2 Sprints, and a duathlon(3.1/20/3.1miles). All the races were after Memorial day weekend, and honsitly if there were any local races earlier I would have done them. I just love racing, its why I do this sport. Now I didn't go all out in those races, but each one was done with a goal, like a better run or bike split than last year. Racing is fun, the longer the race, the more fun I have. |

Regular 124 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Yay - finally i put a (crap) photo up.. Just outside the LP brewery :-) Mile 13 from IMLP 2012... Re: HIM, each to their own. It is not an exact science and everyone will or will not do a HIM depending on what they get out of it. IMLP was my first IM and i found doing a HIM 8 weeks before as a great step / benchmark to see how my training was going. I used the HIM as a long training day but i enjoyed the race conditions. It was 5 1/2 hrs training session which was part of my 13 hr goal i had for the week. The following week was a easy week where my goal was 8hrs, so i took Mon and Tues off to recover.... |

Veteran 176 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I'm signed up for Eagleman 2012 about 6 weeks out. Just a long workout for me, and a chance to race with friends. I did Whitelake before CDA last year. Recovery wasn't too bad. I'm too much of a rookie to say what better, but it seems that the long rides and run during the peak volume period of the race training gave me the best feel what to expect raceday. |

Extreme Veteran 678 Rome, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Heart Rate Question I understand heart rate zone training, but my question is what zone do you race and Ironman at? Racing is different then training and you ant your best effort so sitting in zone 1 is not going to do that How do you determine the correct heart rate to race at? |
