I think you are making assumptions like everyone else.  For some of us, this chain of events is simply unfathomable from our SO.  It's based on years and years of mutual understanding and respect.

Actually its just the opposite.  I've been happily married for 15 years.  Never had an issue even close to this.  I like to think my wife trusts be enough not to take stupid risks.

Maybe if I'd had issues where she'd made unreasonable demands I'd have a different perspective.

I heard that women are losing their fingers left and right from using scissors while scrapbooking.  That's it!  She is forbidden from scrapbooking!

Seems about as logical.

I got bad news for you boss. You're gonna die anyway.

Better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a lamb. Just my opinion...

Well so long as those extremes are the only two options in how to lvie life, sure.

Been with my DH for 25+ years and raised two great kids together.

He is super-supportive of my triathlon hobby. There are, however, some stipulations that make him more comfortable such as I don't OWS swim alone and there are certain places he doesn't want me to ride my bike.  Because he is reasonable, and because we have so many years of trust and respect I am ok with those stipulations. IF he became increasingly uncomfortable with triathlon (for some reason) we would have a discussion. He knows how much I (usually) enjoy it and I know that he would only request I stop if it were a serious issue for him. Knowing all of that, I would absolutely give it up for him. I married him, not triathlon.

Men of 49 are dropping dead every day from obesity.

Obesity is a contributing factor to approximately 300,000 deaths / year in the US.  That is nearly 1,000 / day.

32,885 were killed in auto accidents last year.  That is almost 100 / day. Better not drive!

Each year, 18,000 Americans die from injuries at home. That is about 50 / day.  Better not stay at home.

Triathlon has averaged 6 deaths / year in the US.  Race every day.  It is WAY safer!

Hmmm .... can't even imagine my very marginally supportive spouse to "forbid" be from doing triathlon, that would actually crack me up! It just wouldn't occur to him to say something like that b/c truly I'd die laughing and then he'd have to raise the kids himself

If this is a hobby you truly enjoy and it doesn't interfere with your commitment with your family..think masters 5am or training after kids hit the sack then I see no reason for a conflict. I think you need to figure out what you want..was this just an easy way out of a lifestyle commitment? just curious...

Bodaggit - 2012-09-11 8:59 AM Not to be Dr. Phil here, but were you looking for an out anyway?  I just can't see my spouse "forbidding" much of anything.  I forbid her to date other dudes and beat our kids.  That's about it.

I understand she doesn't want you doing triathlons in case you die in the water - what I don't understand is you say she has forbidden you do swim training?  You aren't going to die in the pool with lifeguards etc on duty.

Has she forbidden you to cycle?  A cyclist had his throat slashed last week.....

I would understand forbidding you to do an IM - that's a bigger health risk.

Take up smoking and drinking i say!

I'm surprised no one mentioned this...but why not ask her to go w/u. To races and swim training. She can hang out by the pool and see u and make sure u r ok. And at races she is rite there and doesn't have to worry. Have her take sim lessons so if need be she can save u ;-)

Should have titled the thread- NO MORE MARRIAGE FOR ME.

Just Kidding,

So what: She doesn't want you to race. It's expensive and time consuming and maybe a little dangerous. Will she forbid you from continuing a healthy lifestyle? Not likely. Is she banning all swimming or just racing? If swimming all together makes her nervous, take a break from swimming for awhile, discuss and negotiate, and when (if) she allows you to do it again, just return to it. It's not that important enough to cause disruptions in your marriage.

I should take my own advice.

Take control of YOUR life, man!  I'm not going to make any mean statements like "Adjust your skirt" or "Your panties must be all bunched up" or "Your wife sure wears the pants". Nope, not gonna go there.  Instead I'll tell about my wife stance on a few things..

Until two years ago, I road raced motorcycles.  My wife openly told me repeatedly that she would be supportive whether I go out and win races or go out and kill myself as long as I understand and accept the risks.  She said that is all on ME.. However, she also said something that made me think.  She said if I crash, which I did - severely a couple times, and become a quadraplegic or disabled to a degree requiring her to take care of me -- feed me, wipe my butt, etc., then that's on HER, and she will not relish that lifestyle or committment.

She is absolutely TICKLED I've decided to focus on training for a triathlon.

Whether you end up doing any triathlons or not, good luck sorting out the issues in your marriage.

The "pimp hand" refers to domestic violence. No idea what HAPE is.
