Regular 1362 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE 2K scy each of the last 2 nights. I'm a little behind but getting going. I'll look up my totals and post soon. It's been a long time since I've seen the underside of 1:00 for 100y. I think I could do it again, but it's going to take some work. I definitely could use some targeted speed stuff, I haven't touched any since getting back in...yet. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE I know EXACTLY how many strokes of fly it takes me to get across the pool, since that's how I estimate how much further I have to go and whether I can survive! "Six more, five more, four more....gasp!" Should be 12, occasionally 11 if sprinting but when I was doing the 200's it was getting up to 13-14 as I was getting tired. Pacing is key, esp. if trying to speed things up. How to push without dying/crash and burn--it comes naturally in running and swimming freestyle but I have the same issue with gears/cadence on the bike! Will try to do the 100 time trial on Thursday. Just don't laugh-- speed's not my forte! Would be surprised if I can hit 1:25 for meters. Edited by Hot Runner 2014-02-15 10:25 PM |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Total now at 45,050m (not sure how that 50m got in there!). 3200m tonight. Main set was 20 X 100m--4 sets of 4 on 1:50 and 1 on 2:10 (swimming them in 1:35-1:40). The weird thing about sets like these is that I get faster at the end (last 5 or so) than at the beginning. Maybe I'm unconsciously holding myself back a little at the start, then going for it when almost done? Anyway, mentally hard. like making oneself into a pace machine, physically not very. This is the last workout in "Four Weeks to a Faster 1500"; will probably do the last week again, and a 1500m trial the next time I'm motivated. (Next race is actually supposed to be 1800m and it's an area known for pretty rough water, so times won't be that fast.) |

Regular 5477 LHOTP | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE Woah, there is some crazy fast swimming going on in here. Nice job everyone. Very motivating:) I like the idea of setting some sort of "speed" goal. Mine are in yards. < 1:20/100 < 6:00/400 (1:30) < 26:00/1600 (1:35) I had, or was dangerously close, to these this fall, but my haitus has set me back a bit. Because we've had to relocate into town while our house is being rebuilt, I've been entertaining the idea of going to Masters. I'll probably do it, but I want to get a little more endurance and feel back before going. Had my longest set for this year so far over lunch today--3350 yards. Brings me to 16350 since Jan 31. |

Regular 1362 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: SWIM CHALLENGE UPDATE I'm only at 11Ky (or slightly over due to one swim being in meters) since I started on Feb 3. A little frustrating in that I've only had 6 workouts in the water so far this year, and 3 of them have been stopped short due to water aerobics or other scheduled pool activities. Gives me a less than 2K average per workout. And only 3 workouts each work, that's not going to cut it. Guess I better get on my proverbial water horse, huh? To paraphrase Snoop, if you can't swim, you bound to drizown. |

The fastest I've swam a 100 ever is 1:05, so averaging 1:09 over a course of 100's would be very fast to me. I'm entering my 5th season of tri, and while I am getting faster in the swim, I'd love to swim more at the pace you're aiming for. |

I might have confused you on that. 1:09:00 was my time for for first 100 of the set. Originally we were talking about going under a min for a 100 but then changed it to everyone lowering their fastest time? I might have been off on that. Right now I hold about 1:15 for a short set of 100's. Growing up I was a swimmer. I did enought to get a scholarship for college. The HS program I was in was very competetive. Back to back national prep champs not that I had a ton to do with that. We had 2 or 3 Olympians on our team and a guy who set a WR his jumior year. The coach and program has produced a number of olympians over the years. My fastest (scy's) 50 was 22.1 and 100 I can't remember my best but I am fairly certain I went under 0:50:00 once or twice. The only reason I remember the 50 time exactly is it always bothered me I never broke 22. Had I not broken 0:50 for a 100 that would probably be engrained in my mind also. I also swam fly which was my best stroke and some IM. Funny thing is typing this I couldn't tell you one other exact time from when I swam competetively other then the 50. As I said, that really bothered me. Also I think I remember reading some posts from you on running a marathon recently? I'd rather run like you! Edited by Goggles Pizzano 2014-02-18 1:52 PM |

My personal goal is just to get my speed in general better. My way of benchmarking that is by doing a 1k test, which I like since it's between my two race distances (sprint and oly). As of Monday I averaged 1:25 and would like to get that average under 1:20, so I got some work to do by May. I wish I swam more when I was younger. Everyone who blows me out of the water (pun!) seems to have had some swimming background. My run is decent. I didn't make my marathon goal, but I am alright with the 3:35 I got. I'm much happier with the 39:21 10k I ran while training for the full. I want to fit a 4th swim in my schedule, but I'm currently doing 4 bike and 4 run workouts a week, so it's tough to fit it all in.

I've been working on run a lot this year and last year until I got hurt. I jumped in this thread to get myself swimming more then twice/week. I like the fastest 100 idea to get me working while I'm there instead of just putting some time in which I have been very guilty of the last two years. If I can keep the motivation up I'll get back to 3 days a week of 1 day pure speed workout and the other two a mix of short yd stuff and distance swims. Once or twice a month I'll add a long swim of straight 2K - 4K which probably doesn't do a lot but it's mental for me. 39:21 for a 10K would be a pipe dream for me. I'd be thrilled to keep anything close to that pace for a 5K which is a fantasy also. Edited by Goggles Pizzano 2014-02-18 2:54 PM |

Nice. Snoop has regular rotation in my swimming music, and I will now think of that every time he comes on I'm with you on the 4x/week strategy. Doesn't always happen, but that's going to be my goal. Running after you swim? You so crazy! How are the leg/foot issues, Brad? There are positives and negatives to running after the swim. Pros: - I find that the swim loosens up my tight calves and alleviates some soreness in my Achilles, honestly. Can actually make the run a little easier in that regard. - My warmup 500 tends to be 10-15 seconds faster if I go into a swim totally fresh. Obviously it's a warmup, so I'm not pushing myself, but I have noticed that speed increase most of the time. - It's easier for me to motivate myself to get in the pool first. If I run first, I can quite easily talk myself out of getting in the pool and instead just sit in the hot tub or head home early. - It fits the order of a triathlon a little bit better. Cons: - Despite swimming in pool water, I still warm myself up a little, and find myself sweating quite a bit earlier in my run workout. - Will often sneeze my way through the first mile or so. - Chlorine smell throughout the run. - Annoying water in the ear issues with earphones. The feet issues are okay at the moment, but I've been doing *all* treadmill work for some time now. We'll see how it goes in a few weeks when I start venturing outside. |

Tried to keep RI < :15, was under for all but a few. First day since I've started swimming again where I had really good (for me) 100s.

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Since I'm a much better runner and swimmer than biker, I try to do any aquathlon that I find. When I'm training for one, I do several swim/run bricks, mainly to practice transitions. I park towel and running shoes by the pool, do the swim in my tri suit, jump out, dry off a little, put on the shoes, and head out to run on our school fields. I like them. Maybe it has to do with this being Vietnam, and swimming first means you start your run cool and wet. Never had any problems doing them. In fact, my best 10K time and one of my best 5K times since age 40 have come on the run portion of an aquathlon, after a vigorous 750/1500m swim. Unless it's a race and you're desperate for every second in transition, it does pay to dry off a little before starting the run, or you'll be squishing in wet shoes. Other than that, and occasional vertigo when going vertical after a race-effort swim, can't think of any downsides. |

Regular 1362 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Added in a fairly mediocre 2500y tonight after a 6 mile run. Felt very ineffective in the water. I could really benefit from swimming with others who are at the level I should be at; it'd be a lot easier to push myself that way. Too bad my Y offers very little in that regard. Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Okay, you ex-collegiate fish and sprinters and young things, do not laugh! I did a 100m TT, if it can be called that, today after warming up. It wasn't really the ideal time training-wise (this was the second of two workouts today, after an early AM hour run, and I've been hitting 12-14 hours a week total for about six weeks without a break, but whatever--it's only 100m, right?). Had to go off the wall as all my pool goggles are getting worn out and wouldn't survive a dive off the blocks. 1:28.68. It definitely felt hard. What's weird is that 1:35 feels fairly comfortable, and I can do 16-20 X 100's at 1:35-1:40 pace on 1:50, but 1:28 is such a production. Maybe partly due to fatigue and recent training. I've done a 1:25 in recent years, but when better rested (tapering for a race). Plus the Sara McLarty workouts I mentioned earlier are all at goal race pace for the 1500m (1:40 in my case). The only others I've done since Jan. have been a few strength-type IM workouts. I did a regular B workout from Sara's website, which includes a mix of distances/paces, today, and just about died. I am really not in speed shape at all. Either that or coming down with something, or both. Feel like I've been run over by a truck. To top it all off, I think that 100 time (which would be about 1:20 in yards) was my pace/100 for the 1650 when I was in high school! Of course, we swam 40-50K yards a week then. But still--wish the body snatchers would return the old model! Total 43,050m Edited by Hot Runner 2014-02-20 6:13 AM |
