Welcome Andrew!

Didn’t do great on last week’s plan- but did get first two runs in forever in and two bike rides and some strength training and a hike. Plus had a not that nice canned gin and tonic and a very nice Vanilla Porter this week.

Plus a good friend wanted me to sign up for a race with him - so now I have two races on the calendar. One on gravel- so I will have to figure out bike- probably either nobly tires on road bike or slicks on mountain bike.

This week’s goals 2 bikes, 2 runs and at least 1 other cardio session like another run, Nordic ski or swim.

Goals for this week:

1. No pop till Friday

2. Next training ride for my charity ride (did I mention I'm doing a charity ride in March?!?); need to plan either a 7.5, 8 or 10 mile route (eek so short in comparison with most of you guys *blushes*).

3. At least two arm workouts, and try and get through the first full set of the dancer's sweaty workout: Day 1 of 10 day YourBody Challenge - YouTube

Sure :-) This reminds me of some the reasons I got for kids missing quizzes when I was a TA.

Although the Ax throwing sounds like a blast! Do you actually have it spiral away from you like in the video?

[/QUOTE

Yes it spirals like that! We're not as far back. It's super fun and I highly recommend everyone should go check it out sometime. They have walk-in hours typically, or you can have a party there (I did a bday party there 2 years ago).

I did not do so hot on my goals last week. They were:
1. Be consistent with training - Thursday - Sunday I bailed on my workouts. So bad!
2. Get to bed by 10pm every night - Actually did well on this, except for Axe night and Saturday, although I left the bar after the 3rd quarter of the Ravens game. It was too painful to watch sober.
3. Do at least 10 minutes of yoga every day - I did this once, but I did buy a yoga mat for my office so I can do it at work!

I'm going to stick with the same goals this week!

Went to Sprint this morning, and am planning some lunchtime yoga

Gretchen Congrats on entering the full distance, Exciting. August is a long time out, when are you going to start focusing your training on it?

Started last Monday. It is going to be about 10 weeks of an "off season" plan my coach devised (that is more intense than most HIM plans) and then build up into the race.

And welcome back!!

I went to masters swim this morning. I managed 1100m before my arms were like noodles and my legs were toast (we did pull, then kick...I only swam about 200m, I think). Very humbling, indeed. Although, I did outlast the guy who is just coming back from back surgery, so there's that. Plans for the rest of the day include eating, shivering, and trying not to fall asleep. :P

Kick sets = evil!

I managed five minutes of the dancer lady's workout and my arm workout - 30 reps of tricep extensions (2kg weight) and 35 of bicep curls (3kg weight) so fairly light to start but maxed out on both. Ashlyn Harris has recently replaced Michelle Obama as my arm porn hero hence the workouts and the new avatar!

Plotted my 8 mile route for Wednesday afternoon's ride and just got one more arm/dancer lady workout to fit in (hoping to manage two lots of five this time round, or at least some of the second lot...)

How everybody else getting on?

Got my run in today at work gym (which was one of my failed goals for last week!)

Felt pretty good upped to 4 X 4min jog 1min walk from 3 x last week. Trying to find where my baseline fitness is since I've been biking and elipitcaling and skiing just not running. This made me sweat so was probably a good baseline to go from.

I also had a friend text me out of the blue to see if I would do a race with him- he's probably 15 years off his last race where I'm only 5. So now I'm signed up for 2 races this summer (the first one I'm signed up for sold out already and he wanted a longer timeline to get ready.

So I'm getting excited!

Still not excited enough to find my way to a pool- but soon. (And to earlier questions I work out either at home or at work, so don't have access to a pool unless I specifically drive to one.) I do have a bunch of stretch cords in my basement I use that are good for swimming strength.

Hey Rob! I used to home brew, back before kids, before the wife, before Fl allowed micro brews.. Are you doing full batches? My problem was that I would brew 5 gal and it would take me months to drink it, even sharing liberally with friends. Before I gave it up I was doing 1/2 batches mostly.

Swam with my squad this morning. Got in about 2400 yds I think. They got in more (he said "let's do 10 75s on 1 min..." yeahhhhh I got nowhere near that so instead did 8 and just gave myself about 10 seconds rest between).

Didn't do yoga again yesterday, so I'm about to do some right now so I don't skip it again! It's hard b/c I have some work deadlines so just end up trucking along instead of taking care of myself. I need to get my balance back!

Hey, all.  Welcome back, Andrew!  So weird to hear about summer break (though it was 70 degrees here Saturday, which made for some weird weather at the football game).

I've been hitting my targets and doing a good job of jostling around my schedule.  Yesterday was a 90' sweet spot ride on the trainer (which is an awesome workout, by the way), then did a whole bunch of stuff at the gym this morning as I'm starting to approach the peak of the strength training part of my plan through the beginning of February.  Tour of Sufferlandria starts up in a couple of weeks so I'll be doing a crash week, essentially doubling my normal weekly TSS and then recover for a few days.  We have to travel at the end of it so I'll won't be able to finish on time but I think I'll still kill myself on the bike just fine.

Another 90 minutes tomorrow doing sweet spot repeats - big focus on "muscular endurance" this month.

Andrew - I do full batches but almost always with a friend and we split them. In the end, each getting about a case. I'll average drinking 3-4 beers a week, so each batch lasts me a good month to month and a half. We don't always bottle and brew on the same day, but our stashes are getting depleted with the holidays and all.

A wise man told me before I got married - whatever you give up for your wife or kids, don't ever plan on getting it back. I hope that's not true for you and brewing.

I gave up brewing before I met my wife. A major life change, and a series of alcoholic roommates made it less than ideal. After 2 years of not brewing, I sold all my equipment for cheap to a guy who was just starting out. Maybe some day I'll pick it up again, for now I just have other priorities and interests. My last brew was a rye that I accidentally left fermenting too long, the airlock dried out and fruit flies ruined it.

Ramp test on the bike this morning. I don’t think it went particularly well. I want to do another one soon, but we’ll see what my coach says. Short run this afternoon after teaching all afternoon. I’m exhausted! I forgot how hard teaching can be on the body, even college kids! Just the standing on essentially concrete floors is a killer when you are out of practice. Doesn’t help that one of my classrooms is about 85F, so by the end I had sweat dripping off my nose and was flinging it all over the room when I gestured at things. Fun!

Question of the day: do you use a compression system of some type (Air relax or other brands) for recovery? If so, when do you do it—immediately after workout or later like the evening AND how often do you use it? I got one last year and only used it sporadically, which is probably why I didn’t think it helped much. Now that I’m using it regularly, I think it is helping my legs recover faster, but wonder if I’m doing it at the right time to maximize benefit. Thoughts?

I sleep in compression socks (low level, like 8 -15 mmHg) about 1/2 the time, but nothing that powerful like a compression boot or leg sleeve.  I also have CVI in my legs (chronic vein insufficiency) and I wear them (15 - 20s and some 20 - 30s when I fly) during the winter months and occasionally during the summer months.  Interestingly, I really don't like them when riding or running - only for recovery or lower effort like hiking.  Maybe my sport ones are too tight (I think the CEPs I use are on the higher end).

Oh, and ramp tests usually don't go well if you haven't been training specifically for them (and they suck, so there's that).  If you're not training up in Z5 regularly, then as soon as you get there you're done.  If you've done a mix of training zones with some serious VO2 max work, the test is more accurate and you'll be better at it.  I bet if you try it again in a week you'll do better.  I like the Coggan 5 min/20 min test protocol better, though that has more of a recovery cost.  I always flunk my Sufferfest "4DP" test, 'cause that REALLY sucks.

Neither can we. Its all going far to quickly... I feel old.

Quiet start to the week so far. Monday off, 30 min ride at Z1, recovery effort Tuesday evening. Swam 4 x 250m this morning, and will run to my parents place to pick up the little man tonight.

Tomorrow is a big day, if the weather behaves itself I'm planning to do the Thursday evening open water swim series event, probably just 1000m, but it'll be my first OWS in 3 years. So I need to start easing back into it. Should probably see if I can still squeeze into a wetsuit before hitting the beach tho. haha.

Good to see lots of workouts being ticked off by everyone. Have a good rest of your weeks.

Swim with masters at 6 this morning. Around 10 I’m planning to do a run. Gotta get everything I before the evening. It is date night, and with as understanding as my wife is being (and will have to be as we ramp up into IM training), I’m certainly not going to risk being late to that trying to squeeze anything in after work!

Went to boot camp this morning. Was really close to bailing but I made it. I also FAILED AT DOING YOGA AGAIN! I am the worst. I think I'm changing my goal to doing it 2 times per week to start. Going to every day so quick is setting me up for failure.

Gretchen, thanks for bringing up compression! I'm flying to Japan in March and have been meaning to ask you guys what you use. It's the longest flight I've ever taken (17 hours I think) so I think compression socks will be important.
Are the particular brands that you guys like best?
