Back when I drank beer, this was my favorite, with fresh guacamole and grilled carne asada! Yummmmm. Oh and has to be followed by the chicken dance....oh, the memories!

This is what we drank on the beach in Cabo. Yes, in cans. I was soooo proud of myself when I cracked open a beer at 11:50am (after much pressure from my brothers-in-law)!!

So far, so good in Mexico!  I am not sure 2 margaritas and chips and salsa are the greatest dinner before my long run, but we'll see!

I did meet an interesting person at Happy Hour last night.  He just left the NIH and I of course was pumping him about food quality in the US.  I asked him if he would eat imported fruit from Mexico or Chile (I always have heard it is a big no no) and he said ABOLUTELY NOT due to their water sources and baceteria levels.  Best fruit comes from the US, Spain and other European countries AND New Zealand (which apparently has stricter standards than the US).  I share this only because so many of us are forced to eat imported fruit this time of year.  I was buying Costco Blueberries, Blackberries, etc, all from Mexico.  No more.  His advice was get frozen if you couldn't get fresh from the preferred countries.  I even asked him if it wasn't better to be eating this "bad" fruit than no fruit at all.  His answer, nope.  So my tip of the day!

Sounds like heaven.  Have a great time!

Just finish a 2 hour Odyessy of the Mind session with five 11-13 year olds. This is harder than training by far! These creatures have the attention span of fruit flies! I cannot wait until March 3 when the competition is over. My wife tells me I will be up for father of the year for this. If I had much hair this would have caused me to pull it out!

Sorry, needed to vent.

BTW, FWIW I looked at the posts of one of the other MG's that has a lot of pages. Most of it seems to be stats for a competiton they are doing for January.

replying in general, not just to suzy. and i fully support local farmers whenever i can.  that said,

i don't agree with your friend and i think its unfortunate you feel the way you do about fruit from mexico.  eating fruit from a local vendor in mexico and eating fruit grown in mexico for sale in the US are not even remotely the similar source.

driscolls, hurts, sun belle, etc have sanitary standards in the field that far exceed the local mexican farms.  the economic gains far exceed the cost of sanitary standards, places like costco wouldn't take the risk if not.

pesticides, a whole different issue.

as far as comments on only eating fruit from certain states... if we're talking about supporting regional farmers then i totally support that. (although seattle to so cal is kind of stretching the whole regionality thing).  however, if the comments are directed from a food safety angle then i disagree and in fact you may be at an even higher risk because of this feeling of "safety".  its amost even funny, to say one won't eat fruit from mexico but will it fruit picked by migrant workers.... from mexico.  ecoli is a risk.  fruit from everywhere, even the good ol' USA! should be washed thoroughly.

gotta ask ... if you don't eat fruit from mexico, do you wear clothing or accessories from mexican maquiladoras?

editing my post here because i think i may have not been clear so i added the bolded words.

anyways... off to eat some blueberries from argentina.  but i bought them at whole foods so they must be acceptable... right.

I can only report what he told me.  For me, he is a credible source who has done food testing/studies all over the world.  If you want to continue to eat these fruit and vegetables more power to you.

I have to share how much I am enjoying being back on a triathlon training plan. I didn't realize how much I was missing it until I started back and got those first couple hard weeks out of the way. I'm getting into the groove again.... absolutely LOVING the pool, not dreading the bike, and having fun with the shorter runs!

Suzy - have a great holiday, don't touch the food!

Almost all fruit, meat and veggies here is grown locally, you can pretty much grow anything. I was brought up in the UK so it seems strange to see strawberries grown in Winter but the climate is perfect for them at that time. We've got a great Sunday farmers market in Noosa with the most delicious food so there's not much temptation to buy packaged food.

I managed to bribe my 2 youngest kids to come down for a swim at the beach today at 5:30am, they forgot the time when they were surrounded by fish and afterwards we went over the road and they had yummy hot chocolates in a cafe. My oldest wont get up for this anymore so it's time to work on the others!!!

HAHA, talk to Sam, she is coaching our daughters Kindergarten team.  My son is in his 3rd year doing it.  I'll volunteer for a lot of stuff but coaching an Odyssey team isn't one of them.

Thanks for sharing Suzy.  My husband works with someone at the FDA who has related  to us strong concerns about foreign food sources.  According to his work (being a regulatory agency and physically investigating food sources) it wasn't so much about the water quality but bc of the chemicals used in other countries.  According to the FDA guy, the chemicals are getting taken up by the roots and are now found in the fruit and vegetables.  He now forbids his wife to buy anything other than organic.

But to John's point, what did they guy do at NIH?  NIH is HUGE (If memory serves, they have 7 different divisions) and if his research is focused on mitral stress and its effect on cardiovascular disease, I'm not sure how much weight I'd put on his claims.  But again, to my above story, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you about the questionable content of foreign food sources.

For us, since my husband had that initial conversation with his contact at the FDA about 1.5 yrs ago, we buy mostly organic (either from our local farmstands or in US food sources).  But not 100% of the time and I mostly trust foods coming from name brand suppliers (although I am concerned about the genetic modification that's going on).   Overall, I just strive to be as close to natural as possible with our food.  Despite working for pharma, I have always hated taking meds if I can find a natural remedy, and finally getting around to eating that way.  To me, it just makes sense.

After seeing a segment on TV by Dr. Oz, my wife has decided to try a gluten-free diet. We'll see how this goes. She hope it will help get rid of her migraines. I am open-minded. It is just that she does this regarding other things she sees on TV. This morning she saw something about how dirty kitchens are, so I wont be tooo surprised if I find a black light unit that she bought today when I get home.

Good morning!  Thanks for all of the supportive messages as I grieve the end of the football season.  Good news is, I'm saving lots of money and empty calories by NOT having a Superbowl party.  Sunday runs don't have to be as early, either.  Ah, well.  Always next year.

Went through 4 bunches of Kale yesterday.  Wow.  Who'd a thunk it?  It went faster than the egg rolls.

I'm fascinated by the gluten-free craze. Have you seen this? The gluten-free line was my favorite.
