Artemis - 2013-03-24 12:56 PMIt started sleeting here.  So gross.  Curling up on the couch to watch a movie for the afternoon.
We're having a massive rain storm here - hail, maybe tornado, really high winds etc. But, even with all that the temp probably only drooped into the 70's, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Now it is snowing.  And 33 F (0 C).  Every time it starts snowing, I'm like a kid..."maybe we'll get a snow day!" even though I know we won't.

I do the same thing...and we never do either...

It's really coming down now! Cars and grass are covered. Go snow go!!

I shall hope and live vicariously through you.

Most of the schools are closed.  My University is opening two hours late.  Guess it's better than nothing but not as good as sitting at home on the couch all day.

The snow is really coming down.  None of the roads are plowed.  As I was coming home from a friend's place I lost control and smacked a curb hard a couple times.  I might wake up to a flat tire on that side.  Hopefully no bent wheels or anything.  Praising God I didn't end up worse off.  There are going to be a lot of accidents tonight.

I need an/some outsiders' viewpoints.  I have been building slowly running (from none for 2 months).  Am I pushing my luck going from run 4/walk 1 x5 (20 minutes total running) to run5/walk 1 x5 (25 minutes total running)?  Should I do run 4.5/walk 1 x5 (22.5 total) or run 5/walk 1 x4 (20 total)?  Or am I being too cautious?  I have had no 'symptoms' with my Achilles since starting running 3 weeks ago, other than minor stiffness in my calf, which I think is to be expected.  WWMD?

Slow and steady increase.   Conventional wisdom says no more than a 10% increase per week.  Distance is what is usually considered but time wise should also be applicable.   4:15 run/ 1:00 walk would be safest.

JJ- - 2013-03-24 9:17 PM Great event yesterday. Over 600 cyclist. I decided yesterday morning that with Galveston approaching and my IT Band history that I would ride the majority of the ride at a easy/moderate pace with 3-4 15 minute intervals at Galveston pace. That turned out very well. Great ride and lots of fun! Finished the 53 in around 3:20 which wasn't too bad for an easy pace. I do really need to focus on hydration intake. I only drank 30 ounces of water. I set my watch to remind me to drink every 15 minutes and still didn't take enough water. Maybe I need to change it to every 10 minutes. I think my nutrition is dialed in. I just find it very difficult to drink in aero for some reason. I actually get out of breath when I drink in aero. Thoughts??

Congratulations Jonathan!

Great ride, way to get in the miles and sort some stuff out.

Not sure about aero. What's your entire hydration setup? Do you have a downtube bottle as well? A lot of people slow down when they take the bottle out of the cage, drink, put back in. Kind of like a break. You may not get that "break" if drinking in aero.

Do you have to change any part of your position at all except maybe tilting your head down a little to drink?

Setup is a 40 ounce speed fill on down bar with intake tube tied to aero bars. I do have to tilt my head down. Maybe I just need to practice it more on the trainer.

Jo, I had to re-read about 3 times to really get it all in. WOW, what conditions! I hope your friend is doing better, and with swim conditions like that, I'm not sure I would have left the beach. OK, I am sure I wouldn't have done it. That is scary stuff.

OK Manatees - here's my day.

The swim - it's on it's off was the talk of the day with announcements coming every five minutes over the loudspeaker.  Finally we got the information - swim delayed til 8.25 for age groupers - one lap - start to left of pier - turn right then left and back past the pier and into the beach.  A beach start well knee deep  I suppose.  We got near to the front...we watched the pros go off - it looked soooooooo bad!

I wasn't nervous, I saw Coach Johnny beforehand he said - Jo this is your swim, you love these conditions, you're gonna smash it.

My thoughts were to try and stick with Nicki - pretty hard with 2000 of us.  Anyway - no siren, Mike Reilly just shouted GO!  and we went.  We had to swim diagonally right really hard to go in a straight line the current was a ripper.  When we reached the end of the pier - guys (those alpha male types!) were getting smashed into the pier!  Not me I was way off course Undecided

Past the pier the waves were about 10-15ft.  I would get to the top sight the buoys then crash down the other side whooping and cheering like I was on a roller coaster - I raised a few smiles!  The wall of water in front of me was amazing, it would rise up about 10ft and I could see hundreds of black suited red capped swimmers in suspended animation before it was my turn.

At the buoys I caught up with the president of my tri club who was having a hard time - gave him some encouragement, I think it helped.  Then I spotted Nicki breaststroking, grabbed her, told her to follow me (my sighting was better).

Turning the buoys was a challenge with many athletes actually on top of them!  Then once past them, those 10ft walls of water were at my back and i had toes to hang onto in front (a big guy in speedos - clearly a swimmer!)

The lifeguards were shouting swim straight to shore - hahahah, I just couldn't I was carried away with a couple of hundred others to the other end of the beach - I body surfed to shore about 400m from the finish line.  I stood and waited for  Nicki then we ran out together.  She hit her watch at 34mins, so I think I was nearer 31 or so for me.  But the timing mat was at transition of course so that's another 10mins after we've chatted and caught up with friends etc!

With that wind I wasn't sorry not to be going on.  Nicki and Alan who have done 12 IM said it was their worst ride EVER.

BUT man what a swim - I loved every minute - bring on another lap!

You are bad azz! Sorry if you've lost your passion for IM, hopefully you haven't lost your passion for stalking

WooHoo, great job!!!!!!

Yup.

10% is a totally random kinda-average ballpark figure which may or may not apply to you, and it's probably wiser to err on the lower side of "may not."

And as my mad polymath pointed out, increases apply both to intensity as well as volume/distance. So if you're bumping up one, be very cautious about the other.

That said, run-walk is simply a pacing strategy, nothing more. Keep a sharp eye on your effort level and time expended--that should govern your ratio and any changes therein. There's no "formula" here but caution and vigilance.

CONGRATULATIONS JANYNE!

That's "J-A-N-Y-N-E." Two Ns. Be grateful I don't make you guys call me Arsiyanti, although with the fact that I call people whatever I want/think their name SHOULD be, I suppose *I* ought to be grateful anybody calls me at all

I get that habit from my dad. I kinda like it. Fortunately or unfortunately, whatever name I come up with for people really tends to stick and spread. Like peanut butter. I like Peanut Butter too. the stuff, and the Manatee.

Ok, thanks all.  I have been going up by :30 on all my run intervals since starting back, so will just go up to 4:30.  I just wasn't sure if I was being too cautious.  But I guess coming back from injury, you can't be, so I shall continue to be good.  WRT intensity--I aren't.  The run intervals are just easy peasy.

I have just made myself what is possibly the best cup of coffee in history ever, and it is delicious, but I have a gazillion things to do tonight (yes, need to be done before tomorrow morning) that I just DO NOT want to do, ergo, not drink the coffee so I won't stay up so I don't have to do them.

Blurf.

I'm eating cheese with cheese crackers along with my most wonderful coffee. I think I'm turning into a mouse.
