Would a monitor be worth investing in, and which kind would be best? I haven't checked those sites yet, but I will be sure to do so. |

The guy is mid 40s and he will be racing IMFL tomorrow, his first Ironman. The girl is 31 and just completed her second triathlon, an Olympic distance. She lost her weight by 1) giving up beer, 2) giving up processed foods, and 3) exercising regularly. The key is REGULARLY. You don't have to do a lot, but you have to do it often. Ask all the questions you can. We will try to answer them. It was not very long ago, I was new, and boy did I ask the questions. And now, I can tell you that I've learned a lot, but I'm not done learning yet. Thank you! Glad to hear that others have been able to lose weight. Along with exercise, I'm working on cutting back on coffee and coke, and trying to drink more water. I know I'll have a lot of questions. I look forward to learning from y'all. |

Spent 7 hours today in mediation retreat - no speaking permitted. Thought it would be harder than it was, but it was so wonderfully nourishing to the mind and body that it defies words. Endurance sports fill a great need in my life and it really helps me balance things, but it is just too fast and intense at times. Odd story but I remember my 6th grade English teacher telling the class when he ran in the winter months of Maine he would rub down with Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to stay warm. Friday we traveled downstate to see family and for the state xc finals. Saturday my youngest daughter ran in the finals. She was 180 out of 280 girls. Since she is just a Sophomore the plan was to just enjoy the day and experience it. Next year we will set goals.It was a seriously cold day 18 F with windchill. After that we went at visited our oldest at college and got home late. I woke up this morning to discover our front yard was gone! There was a massive storm surge and 20ft wave at the 50 mile buoy on Lake Huron. My neighbor said we had non-stop 12 ft breaking surf all day Saturday. 20 friends came over and helped us clean up the mess. Edited by JBacarella 2014-11-02 5:32 PM |

Temps were ridiculously cold, winds were ridiculously high, rip current was in. Most of them rose to the occasion, but two did not finish, one from FL and one from TX. Sam, be careful on upping your mileage too fast. Don't want to see you have to sit out for a while. Gabe, congratulations on your PR on an especially difficult race day. I'm glad Joe told you it wasn't a PR course so you could prove him wrong. |

As for me, signed up today for a 100k team trail ultra, insanely steep, muddy and half of it in total darkness. It will allow you to monitor your effort level to ensure that you are working out hard enough but not too hard. I will try to find a link to a thread or two that discuss the importance of HR training. Others here will chime in on the Maffetone method of HR training that is very easy to figure out and very effective as you begin your endurance addiction. |

After seeing pictures of last years race it reminded me of the Houston Marathon with 25,000 people and speaking from experience it was very hard to maintain the pace I wanted with so many people. But it looks like Gabe was able to navigate his way thru the crowd and run a great race. He proved me wrong too Joe! Buy something low end just make sure it has a chest strap and give you a constant HR. The basic formula is 180-age= MAF maximum HR during training or maximum aerobic function. That is why when Jackie had a birthday I congratulated her on losing a heartbeat, you can't tell her age by looking at her, so don't try. If you have been training less than 2 years, injured or ill -2 more. If you have been training more than 2 years +5. Do this alone for the first 90 days, then add in speed work. "The Big Book of Endurance Training" was written by Maffetone. Its a good place to start your training. I will admit that he mixed some BS and ego into the book. He gets a little hokey with nutrition. I took what I liked from it, and left the rest. The big thing for me is I was able to train and increase millage without injury. I was having a real issue with Achilles Tendonitis, prior to starting this method. |

I mocked my bro-in-law earlier this year for not manning up and doing the full 20' test. I admit I was wrong. The 2x8' is just a different form of agony than the 20' version. My legs are still screaming at me. The good news is my estimate of FTP bumped up from 224 to 232.
