2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Originally posted by drfoodlove Oh Andrew—that’s rough! There is little worse in the biking world, save a crash, than having to walk your bike home (or back to the car). Early in my tri training I had a horrible old bike with shifters on the down tube and absolutely no knowledge of how to ride it, but especially it on hills. One early Saturday morning I went out for a ride and had a slow motion crash trying to start going again after a rest on a big uphill. I tipped over mid road and embedded my handlebar in my left thigh. There was so much blood everywhere. I tried to cal my wife for a pickup for a while, but this was before we had smartphones and she didn’t regularly bring her phone to bed, so she didn’t hear her phone. I finally gave up and decided I’d have to ride home, so I walked myself up that hill and started riding home. About four miles further on, I broke my chain on another uphill and was absolutely done. I walked to the top of the hill and just sat and cursed for a long time between calls to my wife to come get me (still sleeping, still not picking up). After a while, I figured I was only getting home one way, so off I started walking—in bike shoes, covered with blood and sweat, rolling my bike. Needless to say, no one stopped to ask me if I needed a ride. Both of these sound horrible! I had this happen to me in a race a year or two ago. I could feel my tire going flat for a few miles (hit a pothole juuussstttttt right) but it got to the point of no return, so I stopped and asked them to call race support, but right before this happened, a girl had a horrible crash, so (obviously and understandably) all the race support went her way. I was about 2.5 miles from transition, so I just started walking. Race support found me about a half mile out and fixed my tire. The girl I think has since recovered, but was in a coma for a little bit and had a long recovery. So not my best race, but it could've been worse. Edited by nicole14e 2020-11-09 9:52 AM |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Went for a long walk Friday to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Saturday woke up early and went to boot camp, then later went on a walk around the neighborhood to experience the celebrations after they announced the presidential election winner (not trying to make this political, it was just fun to see the excitement in the city). Had a super lazy day yesterday so need to get out and about today! |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Did a 25 minute run today followed by a 10 minute walk. I'm having cervical spasms (spine, near my neck) so was in a bit of pain at the end. Just took a muscle relaxer so hoping that kicks in soon. Also signed up for an 8 week training program. 3 days a week there is a strength session and 3 days you are supposed to do cardio. Also supposed to eat clean (although they say no carbs and that's not really my style...I think carbs are important). Hoping to drop 10 lbs (at least) by Christmas. I often struggle with these types of things when I don't have accountability, but my friend that just finished the program said he would bug me so I stick with it...hopefully that helps! And the fact that I am paying for it. |

Master 2629 brummie land | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN I'm in a challenge with rugby, as we are in lockdown and can't train. There has been running, sit ups, and burpees thus far. Zoom online workout tomorrow I think will be the toughest! Bragging rights, and being competitive help me! |

Regular 1774 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Well I have been quite the sloth to start the week. It is a scheduled rest week, but 2 days off in a row, that hasn't happened very often this year. This week I pulled the trigger, and purchased my smart trainer (got to do it before Mrs Bullfrog changes her mind ) It arrived yesterday, and after a few hours setting up my #2 road bike as a trainer workhorse, I got to experience my first taste of the world of Zwift. Only 50 minutes riding so far (it is a rest week after all) but so far so good. Changing resistance up and down simulated hills sure makes me pay more attention then mindlessly pedaling away on the spin bike. Next up is writing a workout and trying erg mode out (which is how I imagine most of my riding will happen.) and a ramp test to determine FTP (the welcome to zwift tutorial included a sort of ramp test workout to get a ball park estimate of FTP. but not sure how much I trust it) I've also done 1 swim, where I did a fitness test to work out my LT swim pace (for the 80:20 training plan workouts) 400 all out, 2 min rest, 200 all out. I tried to do some cool down laps after, but felt like my arms were going to fall off. Lastly, the forecast is looking good, so the family will be off to the beach for my 2nd OWS of the season tonight. Fun times. |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Neck got way worse yesterday, so I didn't move much, but did manage to get an hour long walk in in the afternoon. Still really sore today so don't want to push it, and it's raining so likely no walk. Gonna do some yoga to stretch it out and hope tomorrow I can do more. |

Member 3141 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Nicole—so sorry to hear about your neck! I get a neck spasm about every nine months or so. They are awful! Doing anything hurts. I hope it gets better soon! Andrew-how’d the ows race go? I did a VO2 max bike ride this morning on the trainer. 8x2’ at 112% FTP. Not sure which makes time move slower, this or planks! Actually, the first six were great, the seventh made me question my life choices in taking up triathlon as a hobby, and the last one I was flying. Later, after the temp warms up some, I’ll do a 35’ run. No sense doing it in 32F weather when I’m working from home and can do it this afternoon. |

OWS went well. 1000m (1039 on the garmin) so sighting wasn't too bad. Finished in 19:46. Good for 47/90 swimmers, but only 4/5 in my age group. Placings very much depend on who show up on the day. Happy with my results, the last race I was 22:36. so almost 3 seconds faster. Most of that's down to conditions, which last night were very, very good. But I feel that 19:36 is more representative of my swim fitness at the moment. Photo of the conditions attached to make all you northern types jealous. Member 3141 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN 1:20 ride this morning and I was supposed to do a run, but it was raining, so I decided to wait until the afternoon, when it was supposed to clear out and warm up. It did not do either of those things! I ended up heading out at about 2:45, because the weather app said heavy rain was moving in at 4. Heavy rain moved in at 2:47. Not a pleasant run in the rain at 47F, but done and I got three medals in TP (it might be silly, but I like them!)—all for speed. Fastest 400m this year and third fastest 1km and mile this year! |

Member 3141 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Hour long run today with 3x8’ at high Z3. These all felt really good. I’m starting to see some solid gains in speed on the run lately, which is nice. Was a tough run though, with a 25mph gusting headwind on the way out! Yes, I also had a 25mph tailwind, but that doesn’t seem to make things feel as easy as a headwind makes it feel hard. |

Regular 1774 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Finished off the week with a 60 minute zwift Friday evening, an 85 minute run Saturday morning followed by 30 min zwift, and a 2 hour ride Sunday. All up about 7 hours for my rest week. S: x 2, 1,950m 41 min (900m laps, 1050 OWS) B: x 4, 113km, 4 hr 19 min (3 x zwift, 1 x outside) R: x 2, 2 hr 7 min Quite happy with my long workouts over the weekend, nice paces, right where I expect to be, and nice low Z1/2 heart rates. Felt very in control and like I could keep going all day. Which is what I'm after. But, my FTP that zwift calculated for me, doesn't seem to line up with my LTHR that I've been using. After a 60 minute ride my HR was well above where it would normally be. So, either the FTP is too high. Or my LTHR is too low, and I should have been working faster... Only way to settle this is with some testing, so I'm planning on a day or 2 of rest followed by a ramp test Tuesday evening. Something to look forward too... Hope everyone is having a good weekend. |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Hi all! I've been in a good groove lately. After my neck got better, I started this program that involves a lot of strength and cardio, as well as eating clean. I haven't eaten as clean as they recommend, but I've been doing pretty well. I also demoed my basement over the weekend. It was really hard work so I'm counting it as strength work It feels really good to get this demo done. I'm one step closer to having more space for my roommate and I. Going into a winter of working from home and not being able to go out will be a little more tolerable with some more space. |

Regular 1774 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN 1st attempt at a ramp test done last night. My experience, it went from easy, to incredibly hard very quickly. The last few minutes of the ramp definitely sucked, but overall it wasn't as bad as I feared... Not brave enough to try a 20min FTP test tho My FTP came in at 235W, down from the 250 that zwift guessed on the first ride tutorial. To be honest, I'm not sure I did a good enough job on the test. I'm not great at the super hard max effort type workouts, I'm more a slow and long diesel engine kind of guy. I think with a little practice I should be a bit higher. But at least I'm in the right ball park and can set up some workouts. On to the rest of the week. Hope you all are having a good one. |

Member 3141 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers' Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2020 Version - ALWAYS OPEN Andrew-I think ramp tests take a little practice to get them right. I’ve done three or four and every time I get a little better and more confident that the results are real. 1:15 ride this morning with 2x20’ at FTP. Ouch...it hurt. That was a big jump in total time from previous weeks (2x15’). Then this afternoon I did a 40’ easy run with a few strides that felt all kinds of awkward, like my legs and arms and torso were all being controlled by different brains. It certainly wasn’t smooth! |
