Extreme Veteran 388 Overland Park, Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread newt - 2009-09-15 10:36 PM Did anyone else notice the tiny amounts of gatoraid and water per cup on the run. At one aid station I poured 5 cups into one and it still didn't fill the cup. That being said, great race support and volunteers. It sure felt humid to me. Maybe to I've lived to long at elevation/low humidity. Yes, I had a fanny pack, so they just brought over a bottle and filled my bottle up, then I poured in two cups of ice. Still didn't help me though, but would recommend it to all. Nice thing is you can drink between aid stations while on the go. |

I miss all the excitement, thrill, and peeps already. An apology goes out to Velcromom for I not being able to apply a simple BT tat on her shoulder Sunday morn - I was such a dumazz. *smacks head* |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread I miss it all too! It's so hard to jump back into reality when all I want to do is talk about the race, look at race photos, watch race videos and obsessively check to see if anyone else is commenting on this thread. I feel great. I was minimally sore by yesterday and had a hideously painful massage that erased the rest of the pain as of this morning. I got back in the pool. The water felt thick Guess fatigue lasts way longer than pain. My foot is doing well and I have a follow up tomorrow with the doc for a long term prognosis. I'm already excited about IMLP 10 and of course IMWI 10. Can't wait to do that course again! |

Master 2621 Almaden Valley, San Jose, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread No apologies necessary - it was funny! I obviously didn't catch it, either! I'm bummed that I didn't see/recognize more of you - this board has been such an incredible support this last year. Is anyone from here in for CdA 2010? Believe it or not, I'm planning on a sprint tri in 2.5 weeks. When I started this whole tri thing, my goal was to do each distance this year. Checked them all off, including the mary and 1/2 mary, but no sprint. So, my youngest is doing a sprint 10/3, and that's the one year (minus a day!) date from my first race. So........I think I'm gonna give it a go! Smart? Probably not. But that hasn't stopped me yet this year! |

Regular 72 Central MN | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Congratulations to all of you suffering through the heat - I worked transition from 9 to 3 and was unpleasantly surpised by the weather as I made my way down State Street that afternoon. Broke a sweat just standing in the sun. So glad that I was able to volunteer and cheer. Signed up Monday am for my first IM - looking forward to your inspiration over the next 12 months. |

What did you learn this year that might be helpful to us newbies in training for 2010. Accept what could happen and deal with it. Train well and injury-free. Get your nutrition down. Be prepared for ANYTHING! Appreciate what all that you have. BALANCE! Respect the bike course and get those Century rides in with lots of hill rides, if you can. Relax and let the day envelope. Double/Triple/etc. check your gear. Ask questions. It's okay to miss a day of training due to something else interrupts/interferes - sickness, unplanned event, weather (but you can do a different discipline or workout here), etc. STAY POSITIVE and focus on that goal! How's that for starters? |

Member 52 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Make nutrition as important as a warm up or cool down in any workout. Make it habbit that every time you go on a ride for more than 45 minutes you are taking a power gel and a water botle of gatorade every time. Come race day it will be second nature- My nutrition plan is a power gel every 40 minutes on the bike and a full water bottle of gatorade each hour. Water as needed. Meaning everytime I go for a 90 minute bike ride I am consuming 2 power gels and 1.5 bottles of gatorade. Thought this was very helpful and gave me energy throughout the day. Think this in of itself helped me cut down my IM MOO time from 14 hours 3 mins prviously to this years 11 hour and 49 minutes. |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Know your nutrition plan. Practice it. Inside and out. Because you sorta stop thinking during and IM and your nutrition needs to be automatic. And it's the key to possibly having a decent run... or at least feeling decent after the bike is over. Depending on what you weigh, think about 240-300 calories per hour. DO NOT overcook the bike. There are several hills on the IMWI course. My advice is similar to the previous poster... don't get out of the saddle. I didn't stand for any of the hills. And I did the entire ride in the small chain ring. I coasted down the hills, giving my legs complete rest on each descent. Get yourself a 12/27 or 11/28 cassette. There is no extra credit for doing this course on an 11/23. You will just fry your legs. Practice riding hills in all conditions. It could rain on race day and you will want to have an idea of how your bike is going to handle on the back side of hills in the rain. And that's about it. I don't have much run advice. I suck as a runner. Oh, wait, one last thing... have fun. More than anything, have a good time. It's likely to be a longish day no matter what. Have fun. Enjoy yourself. Smile. Laugh. Really. |

It's within there. |

New user 4 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Wisonsin is an interesting race. The bike seems easy at the beginning but if you go out to hard, it will haunt you. I took it easy on the first loop, let all the one loop wonders leave me on the first set of hills. Second loop, saw them again as I passed them. A conservative bike will leave you will fresh legs for the run. Set a PB on the course (11:32) with a 3:59 run. I attribute that to my bike strategy. Edward |

New user 43 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread Anyone working on a highlight video and want to pool resources? I had two members of my family that took a lot of overview type shots both still and full motion, and have downloaded and converted the highlight one from ironmancenter to .avi. I have an FTP server up that can be used to exchange files. I just know a lot of us do something like that (there are tons on youtube anyway) and tend to have tons of shots of ourselves but not so much of the general field and craziness and hubbub and scenery. I have a few clips of the last 10 min before midnight that pump me up like crazy, hearin everyone bangin on the boards. Don't know if I'll ever have a finish quite like that one... |

Keep a strong head and you can exceed even your own expectations. I did, and I finished over an hour faster than I thought I would.X2. 10 days before the race I was told I couldn't do it due to an injury. I was devastated. I accepted the situation and dealt with it but I never gave up hope. I was able to finish and while it was hours slower than my original goal, it way exceeded any expectations I had for the day. I don't advocate racing on an injury and I was incredibly careful and took it very seriously, I just think you can really surprise yourself in an Ironman. All that said, I think it's really important to keep a healthy respect for just how hard it is and know there is no guarantee you'll finish. So many things can happen leading up to the race and on race day so I think it's important to be at peace with accepting whatever the day decides to give you. |

Member 10 | Subject: RE: Ironman Wisconsin : Official Thread I totally agree with what 1stTimeTri said about preparation. Ditto.. Consistent training, have a race plan, stick to your race plan and be patient and not go out too fast on the bike.. Get your nutrition down and know what works and what doesn't. When feeling sorry for your self on long runs and rides.. be grateful you have the physical ability to be out there doing these things and don't take your health for granted. Iron vets told me the training is harder than the race. I found that true. The race is a day to celebrate our training.. Matt |
