Thanks to both.  Sounds like maybe I can work on it a little bit even now, but there are probably bigger fish to fry in improving my stoke too.

Thanks for the input guys - will try this tomorrow.

One other question.  When incorporating something new into your stroke, do you typically focus on shorter sets (50's,100's), or does it not matter?

My new purchase.  Bought a compact crank for the specific reason of trying not to blow up on the hills of Muskoka.  Haven't had a chance to ride it outside, only on the trainer so far.  Decided not to adjust my seat and just see how things feel (went from a 175 to a 172.5).

I don't know if this is correct or not BUT, I practice with one arm at a time for a while. I'll swim 25 with the right arm, then 25 with the left. When I start to feel a little more comfortable with the change I use both arms. I'm not sure about the distance, I just go until I feel comfortable or get bored with it (like I'm just not getting it).

Need a little swim race strategy help. The swim in my HIM is two loops. We have to swim back up to the beach after the first loop, get out of the water and shout out our race number. Should I swim as far up the beach as I can then dive back in and start swimming again right away? Last year I kept seeing people walk in the water until it was fairly deep so I thought that must be the best thing to do but I felt like it really slowed me down.

Swim until your hand touches the sand. Unless you are a very inefficient swimmer, this should be faster and will help keep your HR down (running through the water while trying to exit into T1 generally jacks most peoples HR up).

On the way back in, I think it is faster to start swimming than wading through the water once it gets over a certain point (above knee?, mid thigh?) but this is probably pretty swim speed specific.

I have been real busy this week and had to take some time away for other obligations, but now that is al over and I am back. Good thing as temps hit 100 with high humidity for 3 straight days here, and right now it's back in the 50's...go figure.

Had my first race over the weekend a popular sprint here in Wisconsin where a lot of the local pros/elites show up to. Raced last year with a 1:20:xx and PR'd this year with a 1:15:xx so I was very happy about that. I'll put up a RR tomorrow. Odd thing is I PR'd my 5k time including standalone 5K's as well. I seem to run shorter distances faster off the bike then standalone for some reason.

Anyone have any races this weekend? I have my "hometown" race here in La Crosse and my first ever Olympic, haven't been on the bike since Sunday with minimal running and swimming, so I am "tapering" for this race and curious to see how it turns out. It's a TT start with a rolling bike, and a flat run. Targeting for 2:25 but really have no idea what I will be able to put out. Anyone have any recommendations for where my HR should be on the bike and run?

Fred Doucette - 2011-06-08 5:09 PM Hey question for the group? What are your potential races for next year?? For me: 1. Columbia Olympic, 2. Eagleman 70.3, 3. IM m. tremblant.

I am going back to IM racing next year with IMWI, and have been entertaining the idea of IMCDA or IMAZ, wth a yellowstone and grand canyon trip after, but I just don't know about that yet. Rev 3 now has a race here in Wisconsin that is close so I will try that out, and might hit up their Olympic in Knoville for my season starter.

I am guilty of this sometimes. There is ahuge difference from when I swim til my hand touches the ground versus trying to push my legs through the water like that, my HR just skyrockets. Another option is to dolphin dive as well until your hands touch the bottom.

I suppose IMNJ doesn't have the same ring to it huh?

So...assuming Kona isn't an option...what is everone's dream race destination.

Mine is IM Canada (Penticton) and Strongman (Okinawa).  I'd also love to do Couer d'Alene.

Challenge Roth!

By the way congrats on a great race over the weekend!

Hey gang! Sorry I've been totally MIA lately. Work/life is crazy right now and showing no signs of slowing down. It'll be a busy summer...

Since I gave up running in the 8min pace range, I've noticed recovery takes a lot longer. My Tuesday run was 6 miles at 7:45 pace, and I was tight for a day and a half. Higher intensity definitely demands lower volume it seems.

In other news, one of my MBA buddies was recently named CEO of Skinfit! I'm stoked for him. He turned his passion into a pretty amazing career (he was semi-pro at one point). I'm hoping to get a discount or two out of this...

Happy FRIDAY!

Great job with the PR!  Distances in triathlons are notoriously mismeasured (long and/or short), so the very fast 5k time may be a short course.  If not, you should run some more open 5k's and really let loose more.

I wouldn't pace the oly by HR, but you should probably spend much of your time in Z3 and try not to go too long above LT too early.  Swim strong and then ride the bike so it feels "moderately uncomfortable"--should take some focus to keep up the effort.  On the run, set a "solid, but comfortable" pace for the first 1-2mi.  Then try to up the effort a bit through the 5th mile.  Go with whatever you have left in that last mile.  It should be hard to hold your pace, but do so anyway.

Fred is racing at Eagleman this weekend.  I expect a VERY solid result from him.

And I am doing a sprint race tomorrow (0.5/16/4).  My girls are doing the Bambino Biathlon (just a du they named for 'cuteness')--my son is bummed he is missing it, but has a Little League game that interfered--so I am excited to watch.

I set a half marathon PR in my HIM (1:52:32).  But I haven't run an all out half marathon before.  I've only done 2 stand alone HMs (PR 1:55:37, but with a very poor finish), and both were right at the tail end of marathon training with no taper.  My previous HM PR was actually in the first half of my most recent marathon (1:53:49)...LOL.  I think if I focused on a half marathon as an A race...I think I could manage a sub 1:45.

Anyone have any races this weekend?

Doing a 40k team time trial on Sunday.  We're racing a mixed team, and we can't go any faster than our girl can.  She's pretty strong...I would guess she could manage a 1:10 individual 40k TT...but the other two riders are really strong.  Both of them flirting with cracking 1 hour as individuals previously.  So I imagine I'll be third wheel, and taking very few or short pulls.  Hopefully we can crack 1 hour.

Fred Doucette - 2011-06-11 4:24 PM

Thanks everybody.

Update:

Very hot here, mid 90s. Tomorrow will be very hot, humid as there are thunderstorms going through as well.

Non-wetsuit legal swim as I talked to the RD today.

Mixed up all my nutrition for the bike and run. Will eat dinner soon.

I am really psyched about this race!!

We know those conditions favor you!  Others will melt.

Don't forget to put your nutrition ON your bike.  I forgot to put my drink on mine this morning--thank goodness it was just a sprint!

Fred - wish you had had a better day out there.  Why do you think things went wrong - was it a case of not feeling well at the start of the day, or did that happen as the race progressed?

Fred that is a great way to look back on your race and move on, Eagleman is a tough one to. I heard Rinny out split all the men on the run?

Did my first olympic ever yesterdaythat resulted in a shortened swim to the sprint course because of fog I still had a blast and absolutely love the distance. Our start was delayed an hour in hopes the fog would clear, but all it really ended up doing was raise the air temps for below 50 at the start to above 50. TT swim start and I led out of the water after catching up on some people, and actually had a chance to know what it is like to have the motorbike in front of you on the bike for the lead for a quick moment. Unfortunately my legs did show up yesterday and my bike was a bit rough for my expectations (1:07:xx), still held 5th going out on the run. The first half of the run was great as I was running 7:50 pace exactly, but had a side stitch and dop to 8:40ish miles on the second loop. Still finished 2nd in my AG and 13th overall in a smaller field of about 80. I was really bummed about the short swim, but I'd rather swim then have a duathlon. Love the distance and want to try a lot of olympics, already picked up 2 more for the year in hopes that I can work on my speed some more. Off for a nice long swim to flush my legs out.

Question of the day: Since I experienced an hour delayed start for the first time ever, it threw off my pre race nutrition as I burned most of it off by shivering all morning. Has anyone experienced a race daley before? What do you do while you wait around? I just stood around and talked and do not think that is the best approach.
