Subject: helpful info for IM Florida Virgins!
Hi all...I am in Panama City Beach right now and did my final long brick of my training on the IM course. I was NOT able to swim in the ocean due to rip tides (red "no swimming" flags were up at the lifeguard stations), which was a bummer, but I did swim in the 25 yard pool at my hotel, so that was something. Hopefully before I head back home tomorrow, the water will be more amenable to me swimming in it.Bike course:I rode the first 53 miles of the bike course. It is smoooooth, smooth, and smooth. Did I mention it's smooth? Really great course. Is is really flat until about mile 38, except for around mile 12, where you ride up an overpass...it's short but pretty steep by flatlander's standards. Once you get to about mile 38, there are a few short rollers and one longer gradual shallow hill. Nothing to get worked up about, but you will probably be in an easy gear. Speaking of gearing, I ride a 53/39 chainring in the front and was using an 11-23 cassette, and kinda wished I had my 12-25 on for that first overpass. I could have gotten out of the saddle and pushed a bit to make the 23 enough, but didn't want to stress my legs too much, so I think 12-25 would have been better. The wind was about 12 mph from the north, so the first 20 miles was into a headwind, which sucked a bit but was not too bad. Once you turn onto HWY 20 and go east, even if the wind is from the north, the crosswind is not bad because you have a thick forest to your left along the road which buffers the wind. I was riding an 808 front and Sub 9 rear and even with the 12 mph wind, I felt stable (though I am a big boy at 195 - your results may vary. I decided to use an 808 front for anything under 15mph winds). The size of the hills do not warrant being concerned about weight over aerodynamics when it comes to wheels for this race.Run course:Not much to say - it's flat and along the ocean.Pasta meals: CANNOT recommend Guglielmo's Italian Grill

Mr Steve - 2009-10-24 8:13 PM ...I too am afraid of falling/twisting ankle...went slow over the fallen leaves

Mr Steve

I did my last 20 mile run today and stepped on hidden branches in the leaves twice rolling my ankle!  Fortunately no worse for the wear, but everyone be careful out there these next 2 weeks!

KathyG - 2009-10-24 2:48 PM So how many of you are signing up for next year?

No way I'd ever do the same event twice. They cost too much! Me and my sister and a few friends are thinking Lake Placid in 2011.

That is... assuming this one doesn't kill me.

Good morning boys and girls,

Current stats for IMFL are as follows:

- 12 days 23 hours 52 minutes....
- forecast for Nov. 7  (high 70/low 50) w/partial sunshine
- current water temp at PCB 73 degrees

Another exciting stat is that we should get our bib numbers sometime in the next 48-72 hours or so.

Have a great Sunday.

So funny story -I rode my trainer to avoid "getting hurt" outside in the rain yesterday and I what?...fell off my trainer haha! I'm fine but I bent my back rim which won't be repaired untilf Friday and Sat. is my deadline for turning in my bike to tri bike transport -so looks like spinners at thegym for the rest of my taper. Uhg-my life sometimes!

As for next year? No IM's going after some ultra races, maybe IMLP in 2011 tho'

Here's a good one...my coach was doing his last tune up ride the day before the World Championships- you know, Kona, a few weeks ago...sailing down the hwy at about 25 mph when a car turned in front of him. Messed up the car bad! He messed up his foot...discovered broken aerobars mile 10 of the race...still came in 11th in his AG, though he could have placed much higher. Through some connections he got a slot at IMFL and will be racing with us. TAke what the day brings ya and do your best

Just got back from a 6 mile "easy" run.  I was supposed to just run it at a 10 min/mile pace. 6 miles and 54 minutes later I came in at a 9 min/mile pace.  I wasn't really watching the time and I ran at what felt like a nice easy pace.  So this is a good thing right?  I will make sure to more closely monitor pacing during the race but it was a pleasant surprise this morning.

Hi all! I posted that I wanted the t-shirts for the race. I've been out of town and haven't logged on. I can't seem to find who I need to pay.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,
Theresa

A nice little mini brick of 90 min bike and 90 min run. It felt GOOD to get out and do something a little longer than I have this week!!! The bike feels fantastic with the Zipp Wheels and the run was pretty good!! Now Im very excited Please be careful out there folks!! My training partner says when I ride in our area near Downtown Orlando that Im just "playing in traffic" and today...some of that traffic was NOT paying attention and I had to make some interesting moves to not end up on the pavement

The run was cooler than usuallly...ahhhh..finally...just in the 80's instead of 100

Nice easy brick this morning. Dropped the bike off at the bike store for her checkup. She'll be wearing new bar tape for the race.  She is also getting a new chain and cassette before the race. The bike guy tried to talk me into getting a bright (non-matching) color of bar tape. That way the bike would stand out. I really don't want anything on the bike that clashes with the color scheme. I told him I would have 112 miles to stare at that non matching tape. Sorry it isn't happening! lol Although it might give me something else to focus on! :^0

Took a short siesta. Now it is time to hit the pool for a long swim.

I had the most lovely 50 mile bike ride today.   I was not too cold or too hot.  I did not sweat 10% of  my body weight off.  I did not have to be hypervigilent about fluids and calories and electrolytes.  I did not hurt and I was not miserable.  It did not consume my day AND I didn't have to do the whole thing by myself.  It was a nice treat.

Easy day today. I did nothing but sit on my butt. I feel fat now. Probably go for a light run tonight. But I did do a 3 hour ride with a 1 1/2 hour brick yesterday. The weather in St. Pete is awesome right now. I hope it is like this in PC in 2 weeks!

Talk to me about race morning….

Are you planning on getting body marked & tend to your bike then go back to your room to relax for a bit before the race or do plan on just leaving the room with your wetsuit in hand and just relax down by the beach?

My plan is to get body marked , load nutrition on bike then go back to my room for some quiet time.

That's a good question.  I figured I would go down and get body marked, check the bike, and get ready for the swim.  I never really thought about having extra time.  Something tells me that I will be to nervous to relax.  I'll probably just get everything ready, hang out with the family, and maybe listen to my "pump up" music on the ipod.

I plan on goingback to the condo. 1-I like to get there early and get set up 2-I do not do well in crowds 3-I do even worse in nervous chaos.  I am the antithesis of a nervous racer and I don't get it so its best I stay out of the fray.

I'll be heading down, getting body marked, tending to the bike (filling up my bottles), then getting ready.. I do not think I would be able to relax back at my room...I remember the lines for the port-a-johns are pretty long..despite having alot of them there...

Just got back from my 1:45 run...felt good the whole time...practiced with my nutrition..temp was 57 degrees outside...had my arm warmers on...felt comfortable....began putting stuff in the living room and garage to take on the trip...had the minivan completely detailed..looks brand new..ready for the trip of a lifetime..brought a light to clip to the front my hat since, most likely, the sun will be going down while I am running...I heard it is somewhat dark in the park at the turnaround point...be safe everyone

Good to see others head back to the room as I was thinking the same thing.  Nothing like home field advantage when using the facilities.

I am staying about a mile from the swim start, so I will likely just head down with enough time to get ready but not too much time to hang out...especially if it's chilly!

For the very first time, during my workout yesterday, I had the "I'm ready to taper" moment!!  Today confirmed it.  I am ready to taper :p

yup!  the park can be dark...and there's a deer in the headlights spot where the temporary lights blind you!  The park was mentally my toughest part of the race on the second loop in 2007.  I found a new friend and this helped tremendously to get through it.

I planned on a 60 min run today, but got so wrapped up in talking about triathlons that I ended up running for 90 min just so I could keep talking! I actually felt pretty good, though...time for a nice 2-week taper. My training plan still seems pretty long for the next week, although I think the intensity is decreasing.
