Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome back LM and Jackie!LM, how cool that you went to Vancouver. I don't think 2 weeks off will hurt you this far out, just get back in there trining.Jackie I'm with you on the food! Hungry all the time, I have even gotten up in the middle of the night to eat because I was too hungry to sleep.DC, I'm a total newb but was told about wind the other day: early on the course you come into a narrow valley with a skinny lake on the right side. If the water on that lake is rippled, its a sign of wind up ahead when you come out of that valley. Intensity of the winds correlates to the size of the ripples on the lake.Happy training everyone.Kelly |

As far as the rain, I am expecting it to rain. By mentally convincing myself it will rain (which it probably will!) I'll be happily suprised if it doesn't. I've also done several races and training rides in the rain so 'no worries' with the rain. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not to be all Debbie Downer, but I'm having kind of a crappy week (sick with a nasty cold). My training feels so... "meh." I watched the start of IMLP 2009 that I had recorded to cheer me up...which worked in that it got me both excited and nervous. What's everyone's training look like this weekend? I'm doing a 1.5 hour ride (indoors--has anyone seen the winter wonderland NYC turned into?) today, a 2 hour ride tomorrow and then a 16 miler on Sunday. Hopefully I kick this cold so I can do all those things in a strong-like HTFU fashion... |

Hopefully I kick this cold so I can do all those things in a strong-like HTFU fashion... im getting over a stomach bug. dont feel so bad--it happens to us all, I basically took the week off, I had about 14 hours this week, changed it to a recovery week of around 6 hours, which wasn't supposed to be until next week, so I could get 100%. turns out it was the right right call, as I am still not 100%, just cannot kick this stomach thing...does get a tiny bit better every day..... the way I view hard weeks is you gotta make the most of them. You are much much better of resting, and being 100% for your key sessions, than fighting through them. There is a good HTFU and a bad one. There is good hurt, and bad hurt. It is very hard to walk away from a training block, but I find once you do it, you are so glad you did...... |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am on a recovery week....so only 7.5 hours. I am working with an excellent coach (competitive triathlete himself and finisher of multiple IMs including LP) and have not gone over 10.5 hours as yet. The work-outs are (relatively) moderate in duration but of very high intensity. I of course worry about under-training but also know -- speaking entirely for myself -- that I personally could not sustain 14+ hour non-recovery training weeks from here to LP. I am still building the engine and hope to gradually add hours while also juggling work, kids, marriage, sleep, etc. Each to his own but what people describe as "bad weeks" still seem like a lot of training....at least in terms of total hours.... |

Debbie popped pills and withdrew from sports and school. Her peers started calling her Debbie Downer the Frowner. I'm in New York, and oddly I've been getting more training in these past few months then some Spring and Summer months of past. Crazy I tell yah. Last week I was in a funk, mentally and physically. I took a few days off and now I feel fantastic. Ever since I started training 8 to 10 hours consistently, it seems like Fatigue hits me in waves or cycles. Like I can go a certain amount of weeks and train consistently and feel great; and then Fatigue comes and it's like I feel like and can't do . And it's not cause my muscles are sore, or my body is beat-up, it's just a deep down fatigue. But I know if I take a few days off, focus on nutrition, I'll bounce back stronger than before! This weekend I have an 17-mile run planned with my buddy for Saturday morning (which is now getting pushed back till Sunday morning due to the snow). Later today and tomorrow I'm just gonna get on the drainer and stay on it as long as my brain will let me. It's all mental for me getting on that thing. |

![]() LP MARATHON QUESTION: How is everyone planning their Marathon Pace? Truth be told, my Race Plan is very simple: moderate effort on the Swim ; EZ to Moderate effort on the Bike ; track everyone down on the Run. But how do you pick your Marathon Pace? Especially for a course like LP? I mean, I know I should keep it Aerobic, but other than that -- how does one choose an Ironman Marathon Pace? |

Especially for a course like LP? I mean, I know I should keep it Aerobic, but other than that -- how does one choose an Ironman Marathon Pace? I've found the following ( an adaption of Daniel's V-Dot ) to be pretty accurate, in terms of estimating what race paces you'll be able to hit. http://www.personalbestnutrition.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1223516487/0#0 And from my experience ( having made the error twice now ) going out too hard the first 6 miles is disastrous. It really is key to run the first 6 or so controlled. :30 slower on the first 6 miles is 3 minutes. :30 *faster* is going to cost you a lot more than 3 minutes on the back-end of the marathon. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm with you guys on the fatigue. I'd rather skip an a.m. session so that I can look forward to the afternoon. I got a 2 hour delay to work today because of the weather and still got up at 6am to hit the drainer because I looked forward to it. Once training starts to feel like work and gets daunting then it's time to hold back a little. For the marathon, not going to lie, I plan on walking for 30 seconds at every station. I did this for two races (one 1/2 and one full marathon) and was 15 seconds faster/mile then when I ran all of a half marathon. At this point, 5 months away, it's not "if" I can finish, because I can and I will, it's just the training is for "speed". |

Dang, that thing looks pretty accurate from my experience; minus the Ironman marathon which I have yet to run. Running 6 controlled miles to start sounds like a good strategy. My stand-alone marathons are 3:33 and 3:34 ... so I'm hoping to get my swim and bike fitness to the point where I can run a 3:45-ish. Edited by Dream Chaser 2010-02-26 5:03 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, I'm less down now than I was before--thanks for the pep talk. Mostly because I FINALLY tracked down a pair of my favorite Asics that were sold out in my size EVERYWHERE. Very excited. Anyway. TRAINING QUESTION.(sorry, long post) Currently, I'm following a modified winter maintenance program right now. It's from the site, but I don't have full access, so I'm going by volume and sort of plugging in workouts to fit my need to improve on the bike and PR on a half marathon towards the end of March. I'm planning on following the BT beginner IM plan, which officially starts March 8th. Winter maintenance ends...this Sunday. So I have an unplanned week between the end of one plan and the beginning of another. AND then for the prep period on the IM plan, the hours start off at like, 8 per week, while currently my weekly plan is anywhere from 10-12 hours. ISSUE ONE: What to do in the week between plans? Repeat the previous week? Make it a recovery week? (Seems a little silly considering the prep phase of the IM plan will feel like a recovery week simply because of the lower hours). ISSUE TWO: That said, is there a reason not to drop down on the hours? Will I lose the fitness I've gained from doing higher hours on the maintenance plan by suddenly dropping down to fewer for a few weeks before building again? If so, should I just make the workouts longer? What would BT do? Your advice and opinions, as always, are super appreciated. ![]() Edited by swishyskirt 2010-02-26 5:09 PM |

You'll need to get your 5K time down in the 18:40-17:33 range to have the VDot to support that run (3:33-3:34) given you pace your swim and run right and hit your nutrition. I like to look at the chart currently to see where my VDot falls and what potential IM run I could have if I execute well. That's why I'm working on my 5K now to get my VDot up so my potential IM run time is faster. For IM Canada I was 8 minutes off the bottom of where I was which I think is pretty good considering I was puking on the bike for 4 hours and was very calorie depleted. |

I live in a cement duplex on a small Naval base and this thing was shaking like someone was shaking a doll house. We're still trying to find out more info but there's no damage around our base. Honestly, I think someone was trying to shake the lazy out of me. It's been a tough week, but I need to HTFU something serious. |
