Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread LSUfan4444 - 2010-09-06 4:17 PM Mile 50???? Not that I don't believe you, but it certainly doesn't make much sense to me to have special needs before the halfway point of the bike. It is early on the bike, but they explained it's due to logistics. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I just ran my first 18 miler of this build and it hurt bad. Thats a stand alone 18 miles, although I did swim 4k and bike 41 yesterday. I can't imagine running 26.2 right now after the 2.4/112. Hope I can get more endurance quickly haha |

Hope I can get more endurance quickly haha All of my runs of 15 plus have hurt some, mostly due to the hilly rides the day before I guess. The difference this time using this run training plan versus when I used it for the stand alone marathon is I seem to be recovering better/faster. Although I will admit that I was more than pleased to see a recovery week on the schedule this week! Great work!! |

Regular 88 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread krashockey - 2010-09-06 8:41 PM Anybody know what flavor of Ironman Perform the race is going to have...can't seem to find it on the website i was also wondering about this as well as:how do they distribute fluids at each rest stop at IM FL?? at my last HIM they actually handed out plastic bottles of Gatorade Endurance so you could just slow down, grab the bottle, put it in your cage and go; no stopping. but at my last century ride you had to dismount and refill your bottles from pitchers or at least stop and have a volunteer help fill your bottles. just curious as i'm trying to figure out how i want to setup my water bottles. i'm thinking about going w/ aero drink between my bars, one bottle vertically inside the frame triangle, and one bottle in my xlab. then i'd use the other cage on the xlab for an old small water bottle w/ my flat kit/multi-tool/CO2/etc. also, while i'm on the subject of hydration, should i be drinking any 'plain' water during my IM or should i try to always be drinking nutrition/electrolyte/sports drink mixes?? |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I think they have all 3 flavors of Powerbar Endurance on the bike. I've asked a couple folks who did IMLP how the flavors worked but they didn't use it so they didn't pay attention. I like lemon lime Powerbar Endurance had 3 bottle of it on my 5 hour ride today. I think I'll post in the general IM forum and ask. If they just hand out out flavors randomly aid stations might be a little more chaotic than normal. At my last two IMs they had one flavor of Gatorade and water so it was either or not 3 flavors and water. I am just using the powder and haven't ordered any ready to drink because I'm cheap. I'm not sure I want a case of Mango for example. At RI70.3 they had a different flavor at each bike aid station and what flavor was where was listed in athlete's guide that comes up 2-3 weeks before the race. I hope they have it in the IMFL athlete guide. |

My plan is to stop at each aide station, put my feet up, take advantage of their hospitality, and enjoy the ambiance of IronMan day. -- oh, it's a race you say? |

The hubs is traveling this week for work, so I'm solo and well, it just spells no training getting done. It all started after my long run late last week and it's carrying in to this week. Not good. I'm concerned, and just hoping that several days off isn't going to ruin things. In good news, we did book the condo today. Staying at the Shores of Panama like everyone else is it seems. |

Regular 72 Baltimore, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Sometimes I think they should give out medals at the starting line for big races like Marathons and IMs just for surviving the training. It certainly makes race day seem easy compared to the complicated logistics of getting your training in AND having a life. Its reassuring to see that other people are struggling too. Helps me convince myself that if they can do it so can I. I also had the same revelation Kenj though. Recovery after my 20 mile run on Sunday was maybe about and hour. I felt amazing that day and felt good today on a 7 mile run. Something I've never really experienced before. Kinda neat. Just a reflection. Justin |

Expert 885 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Couple of questions for those who have done IMs and IMFL before: 1) Are the before race and after race athlete dinners/banquets worth getting extra tickets for family/friends or do you skip it all together? (this is my first IM if that makes a difference) 2) On the bike, are the roads smooth or are they chip-seal? If chip-seal, is it the ok kind or the rough kind that makes your whole body vibrate? And one more - I know it can vary year to year and day to day, but I have heard that there are parts of the bike course where you can expect there to be more wind. Which part of the course are people talking about? Wind really beats me up. I've been riding in the wind, but it just takes the energy out of me so I want to be mentally prepared going in. |

I went to the pre-race dinner the first time and we walked out after a LONG time when they still had not managed to get to the info about the course called "mandatory" I can only take about an hour of inspirational stuff. It was noisey and crowded with not enough space for everyone. If you want to go don't drag your family esp if you have small kids. I did not go the other 2 years and have never gone to the post race banquet 2-I don't know that any of it is chip seal but I don't really know what it is. Its smooth with the exception of camp flowers road which is pretty rough and pot holey. You want to pay attention on that road. You will see a LOT of ejected bottle etc on that road but its not that long a section. 3-Its been head windy the years i did the race the first 50 miles then you get a nice tail wind then windy on the out section of the out and back then tail wind home. its entirely possible a completely different wind pattern could occur on race day. |

I completed a Half-Ironman last Saturday on open roads and the combination of no drafting and relatively heavy traffic as the morning wore on made things interesting. Coupled with the fact that I'll be riding on the wrong side of the road I'd prefer the traffic to be light! |

I'd go but I wouldn't spend $25 a person for crappy food for my family. I find the information they share helpful and Mike R. does a good job with making presentation portion motivational. For first IM I wouldn't skip it. Anyone know where we can find out what the tide will be 7am on Nov 6th? |

Thanks Sue! This is exactly the info I was looking for. I was pretty sure that spending the money for the dinners would be a waste, but wanted to make sure. Knowing most of the road is smooth is good to know. The roads I ride on around here are not and feeling that vibration for a good portion of the road wears you out. And yes, I know the wind can vary, but if Florida is like here, the wind typically blows certain directions during certain times of the year. A tail wind coming home would be nice. |

To the locals and those who have raced IMFL before, what is the typical water temp in early November? I am trying to decide whether a sleeveless wetsuit will do, or if I need to purchase a new full sleeve. Any guidance would be appreciated! |

To get to the start line last time: 4000 miles on the bike, 600 miles running, 100 miles swimming. The race is only 140.6 miles. - Piece of cake after months of training, eating right, and staying healthy. Not to mention good luck that nothing happens in the last week or two. |

Hey cool, thanks a lot man. I'll be sure to check this out. Doing IMFL is going to have to be a game time decision because there is always the possibility of my military training schedule getting jacked up. But if it looks clear for me to get to Panama City, I'll be there. |

Hey Kathy Based on what I've found it looks like low tides is at 5:36am and high tide that day is 8:06pm with sunrise being at 7:01am. the Not sure how that plays into my plan as we swim out and back other than there will be more beach for spectators ;-) What were you thinking? |
