IceManScott - 2011-02-08 10:07 AM Simple Green for the frame.

Moving parts, you will get a lot of answers.  I spray WD 40 on the chain at the back of the cassette where the chain turns down as I turn the crank.  Then I shift the chain through all the gears.  Then I wipe a cloth over the cassette as if I were buffing a shoe.  Then I hold the cloth around the chain and turn the crank.  Oil is now gone, chain and cassette are clean.  Then I dribble my chain oil on the chain at the same place as I turn the crank.  Then shift it through the gears.  Then wipe off the chain the same way.    There are other ways.  Some will scream about WD 40, but other mechanics swear by it.  Works for me.  Just don't be spraying it helter skelter all over the wheel hub.

Thank you for the advice. I really should take my entire bike apart to clean it. I've only wiped it down and my husband oiled/lubed it for once in the 3 years I've owned it *shame*

robingray_260 - 2011-02-08 10:16 AM Triathlynne - I love your new Avatar!!! makes me jeolous as I would love to get outside with my bike - sigh...

As for cleaning the bike, I use a very tiny bit of car wash soap and a sponge.  No wd40, but yes on the chain grease.  They also make special brushes for cleaning the chain and cassettes - they look kind of likel ong, narrow toothbrushes and work great. You probably can't go too wrong with whatever you do, but definately wipe the excess chain grease off!

Iceman - awesome news on the swim!

Thank you   I think we have a brush for cleaning (Hubby and I have the same bike)

I got so wet on that ride - one of the wives of the riders took some shots of us last weekend... My back was completely covered in muddy splash marks.   Fender time!

Hubby gave me the option of getting a Garmin for Valentine's Day.  My choices are the 305 w/ heart monitor or the 405 w/o heart monitor.  What do you like/dislike about your Garmin's

the Garmin 305 is huge! For that reason alone I wouldnt get it. I like the 405. I bought a Garmin 210 with HR monitor because its the smallest face and works great (I've heard the 405 screen doesn't always work when it gets wet, or your fingers get sweaty)
The only issue I have with the 210 is its not compatible with BT, but maybe it will be in the future.

I have the 305 and it works great.  It IS huge, as Corncub said, but I usually run with long sleeves anyhow, so I just tuck it under my sleeve.  It's definitely not too heavy and the plus side to the large size is that it's really easy to read the screen without breaking stride.

Triathlynne - 2011-02-08 11:16 AM I have a question about bike cleaning..  I am terrible when it comes to that. I mean I really am. It's probably just as well I don't have kids lol   Anyway, I did manage to change my own tyre and my own brake pads, the 1st time in 3 years..it was so hard to change those out. Never again.   Anyway, back to cleaning my bike. How do you do it? What do you use for all the moving parts??  Any tips would be great.  I'm a complete expert now and taking on and off the rear tyre. I always had trouble setting the chain correctly but after a few attempts I nailed it. I'm also going to a bike maintenance class at REI in March.   I feel like a dumb arse for waiting so long to do this. Urgh.

I use White Lightning Easy Clean ... spray it all over the casset, chain, and derailers.  Make sure I do this outside, run the bike through the gears a couple of times, then spray it again, and whipe it all off with a clean rag (throw the rag away now).

Then I use White Lightning Easy Lube (it has tefflon and is very light, doesn't pick up lots of extra dirt later)  just drizzle it on the chain as I am running the crank, then I drizzle more on the casset, and hit the springs on my pedals while I am at it.  Then just use a clean rag to wipe off the dripping extras.

A well maintained drive train will save you lots of cash in the long run.  I just had to put a new Dura-Ace chain on my TT bike after 1700 miles.  Cost me $75... can of White Lightning costs $7

Love my garmin 305..... I'm actually on my second one. I heard that some people have had problems w/ the 405 being to small and not easy to use. I can't speak personally bc I've never used it. But I will swear by my 305!!!!!

I have a 305 w/ heart rate monitor and I love it.  It is big, but once you are used to it, it's fine. And I have small boney wrists. I have to wear a wrist sweat band under it during the summer when I can't put it over a jacket.
I think the display is a bit bigger as well.  Easier to see while moving.  Only down side, can't wear it in the water for open water swims.

Strength training.  Should be toward the bottom of the choices.  There are drop downs down there so make sure they are open.

I have a Garmin 310 XT with HR.  Love it.  Relatively few problems.  Once in a while it won't upload workout to the web site but I don't care.  I only have it for distance and pace.  You think they would put a clock on it.  But they didn't that I can find.  Will look again.  Water proof but I don't wear it in the water.  I run in downpours.   I don't know about the 305 or 405 but from experience, I need the big face.  Anyone try the Timex Ironman?  Looks like it has everything you need for about $350 and a medium face.

my husband has the 305 and I like that it's easy to plug the USB into the PC and VOILA! my 310xt is great, but the garmin connect web site isn't always working (they underestimated the use and are upgrading it ... ahem) The HRM IS waterproof... how do I know? it made it through the gentle cycle of my wash and still works!! I haven't played with it much but I do love the heart rate monitoring and pace. As I get fitter my miles have come down from almost 15m to almost 13m... it tells me almost more than I need to know but I LOVE A GADGET. The maps, the data... ahhhhh

I have the 305 also and I love it.  I started using the interval training workouts for my running. Running 3 mins, walking 1. Tells me when to stop and when to start. I also uploaded a 70.3 bike course last summer when I didn't have a clue where I was going, it was a little off on the turns but only by a few feet so other than that it worked great.   I broke my HRM by accidently washing it though :/  My friend is giving me her old one...phew.

I'm also a member of the Garmin 305 club!!!  Love, love, love it!  Finally started using the heart rate monitor when I started my HIM training on Jan. 1--now I can't imagine training without it.  I love the feedback of knowing I can push it harder or when to back off.  I'm finding out I can push a whole lot harder than I thought I could.

Have to share this!  Yesterday I got my first 'you're so skinny!' comment! Laughing  I was standing on a stool writing on my whiteboard outside of my classroom and a janitor I haven't seen for a while walked by.  We exchanged hellos and then he just looked at me and said "you're so skinny!  What are you doing!?"  I just laughed and said 'swimming, biking and running!'

Have a great Wednesday!

I have the 305 also.   It is a little big but that doesn't really bother me and I love the fact that it's easy to read.  I've used it for interval training and I also used the Virtual Partner to pace me for a 5 mile race I did last fall.  I still haven't tried the HR monitor but I think I may start using it this spring.  I can't compare to the 405 since I haven't used that one, but I love my 305.

I tried a brick workout at the gym last night - trying to make up for a missed run on Monday night.   Did an easy 30 min ride on the stationary then some laps on the indoor track.  I don't use that track much, my right leg bothers me a lot after I run on it - too many turns when it's 10 laps to a mile.

Hope everyone is having a great week!

Today was my first bike class. I'm doing it with a bunch a people I know (my trainer and some friends) all of them fairly experienced bikers. We did a thresh hold test to start the session off. Man, that was intense!
I came in "last". I guess its good for me to come in last. A nice little lesson in humility. Everyone is sweet and supportive but seriously it is kind of humiliating because were all plugged in to a computrainer that projects our stats on the wall, plus a little graph that looks like a steeplechase with bikes representing us
racing so you can see who's winning, and in my case who is VERY far behind.

FYI, there are people who can do far fewer watts than me who kick my butt in time trials.  The less weight, the less power you need to go fast.

Don't get discouraged.  The test is just to give you a baseline for where to start to train.   Stick with the training program and you''ll see those power numbers go up and the weight numbers go down.

I did an 8 week class like that last summer.  It too was filled with much more experienced riders who routinely kicked my butt.  By the end of the 8 weeks I was able to keep up with or (or at least be close to) 2-3 of the others, but there were some I never got anywhere near.  It was a great program and got me up to averaging 20mph during my sprint tris.  So, keep with it and don't be discouraged by lagging behind the others, you will get stronger and faster.

Thanks Amd723 and Ice,  those kind of improvements would be awesome. My instructor told me that we're looking for 10% improvement in 2 months. I'm not exactly discouraged, more just scared that I committed to doing this for two months, I'm definitely feeling like I'm outside of my comfort zone training with these peeps, but will stick with it... for now.

What do you all do when you get scared, intimidated at a race or whatever?

I think being nervous or anxious is normal.  You just have to remember that you are there to run your race, not others, and that you have put in the training needed to do that.

Kim, congrats on the compliment!  (And you STILL haven't posted any pics! )

Nicky,  Don't worry too much about where you start.  (Would you feel better if I told you I have no idea what my power output is?)  Focus on your improvement over the next 8 weeks.  And yes, it's natural to feel a bit nervous or apprehensive when you get outside of your comfort zone (that's why it's called a "comfort zone." )  Embrace the challenge as something 100% within your control (unlike much of life).

Everyone,

I'm trying to catch up this week.  It helps me to know that you are all functioning quite well in my absence.

Breathe deep, mental pep talk, and then a nice fun picture in my head to get me started.  I've been doing a LOT of things outside my comfort zone lately.  It has really helped to have a good friend around for some of these things but when it got down to it, it was stubborn perseverence that I can and will do this.

Awesome on the compliment.  Well deserved.  You have been working hard to get there. Smile

(I did end up getting the 305 - hubby picked it up tonite and gave it to me early.  I'm thinking I will find out I can push harder too when I start using it.)
