What tyres do people use on their road bike??

Mine seem ok on very smooth roads but very slow and bumpy on rough road surfaces... probably just my poor cycling

Maxxis Detonator for training.  i don't switch the rear when going from the trainer to the road.  just lazy.

Continental GP 4000's for racing.   Not that that helps me any ;-).

here is the latest revision of al morrison's list tony mentioned above.

Ditto - Continental GP 4000's on both my road bike and my tri bike now.

Serious Question Ahead:  Who's racing this weekend? we want details!

For the rest of us....destination races are in the cards for many of us.  Let's talk about the little things you pack that make a difference come race weekend/race day....especially helpful for our soon to be IM!!!!

I am racing a Half Mary this weekend and a Half Mary next weekend. I signed up for both races back to back because the second one is for U. of MD Cancer Center, which is dear to my heart. I look forward to having fun, running well and staying healthy!!

The only destination race I have done is in Boston. I packed a lot of my own snacks, food, beverages, and race fuel. It really helped not to have a lot of different foods that I am not used to during training. Also, it was helpful to make an organized list before I left so I did not forget anything I needed especially for the forcasted weather or possible unforseen weather conditions.

good luck racing peeps!  nada here.

little things to bring... as dumb as they look, compression socks are freakin' awesome.  i've found that when i start beating up the legs as much as i have i can pretty much wear them anytime, not just for recovery, and they help.

I agree with the compression socks.  They helped so much when I had to jump in the car and drive ~7 hours after last Sunday's race.  Felt great Monday.

I'm doing a bike tour this weekend, leaning toward the 45 mile option.  Not a race, hey, it's an event.  An event that doesn't give hats or shirts, but PINT GLASSES!!!

This is what the start line of a 50,000 participant race looks like.  Where's Cadmus?

I was pretty happy with my workout today. I did my first brick ever off of a TRI bike. I've done plenty from spin to treadmill and a few from my really crappy hybrid to the pavement but this was quite different. We were doing an actual TRI bike and run course from the Cohasset Sprint TRI. My training partner and I are nowhere near the class of these other guys so I certainly was pushing it on the bike to stay remotely close. I got there early and did about 11 miles at a moderate pace to get lose and then the course is just over 12. I forgot to hit stop on the Garmin when I met up with them and we stood around for 5 minutes BS-ing while everybody got prepared. Then we rode down to the start from the guy's house that we met at a slow pace. In spite of all the downtime and slow pace my pace was still 16.5 MPH for the 23.2 miles and throw in how hilly this course is I was really pleased.

Then came the run which was 3.27 miles. Man did my hammies and quads feel heavy. Again the course was super hilly so uphill the hammies screamed and downhill the quads. I made the decision after the first tenth of a mile that it wasn't worth an injury so I decided to ignore the pace everybody else was doing and also to not look at the Garmin for heart rate or pace. I just went with what felt right. On a run that had 600 ft of ascents in the 3.27 miles I averaged 8:31/mi going 8:25, 8:25, 8:47 and 8:15. The 8:47 was the most hilly part so my effort and pacing was very even. I was really shocked that I pulled this off considering the bike intensity, climbs and this being the first time.

If you take out the downtime I probably averaged over 18 on the bike and could have maintained that run pace easily for another 3 miles so I'm feeling pretty good about the Olympics I have coming up in June and August.

Now I'm praying this doesn't croak me for masters swim tomorrow, my long run on Friday or my zone 2 bike ride on Saturday.

It's a charity Race, Susan Komen Race for Cure. I am being chipped, so that should count as a "race".     I got some really good advice at my LRS when I went to take my friend, who is a breast cancer survivor, for new running shoes - she decided that she wants to run a Half marathon/Marathon. :-)

So I'm going to try to follow his advice and see if that can help with my running endurance (without walking).  Need to stick it in my head that NOT TO WORRY about pace, just run. :-)

You can see that when I'm on the bike that I'm grimacing...head pain.

I didn't want to litter, so I had to put the cup from the Aid station in my shirt.

Tires -   I used Conti Attack/Force last year until I got a nice little gash a month or two ago.  This year, I'm using GP 4000's.  They feel a little better, but I'm not sure if it's the tire or the wheels.   However, I've read in some areas that I shouldn't have gotten the colored ones because they increase the CRR to about 20%.   While I may be overweight, but I'm not as heavy as many riders that rides these tires, so I don't know if the weight of the rider makes a big difference for the CRR of the tires. Next tires I want to try is the ProRace3.

I don't have a lot of money to burn, so I just have one set of tires for everything.

Funny enough - I used my Attack tire on cheap rims that came with my bike for my Tri on Saturday. I could swear that it felt much easier to climb hills, but not as fast on the descents as if I had both aerowheels.  I will do a couple rides just to be sure. Just kind of an interesting observation.

My favorite??  The one with the cup stuck in your shirt.  The variety of things that can be stuck in a shirt is endless.  Wonder what other things people have put in there???????

I love that one, too, DJ!  And the heel click photo again is pretty awesome coming with a migraine.

Jayne, my first Olympic was 100 degrees on the run.  I ran with sponges in my shirt and it turned me into a B cup at least!!!  Nice photo that I don't believe John can pull up online.  HA!

During races, I sometimes stick my used gu wrappers in my shirt just because I'm already gross and figure I can throw it away in a garbage can when I'm done vs. litter up the roads.

REALLY??? Sponges are all that's required to become a B cup? Why didn't it work for me???

No races here. Best travel item: Trader Joe's 70% cacao chocolate bars (buy the 3-pack near check-out)... Just in case you can't find dessert, and/or for the late-afternoon pick-me-up. That, and fleece -- no matter what the temp, you never know when you might need something warm and fuzzy.

Linda-just so we can stop quoting that awful picture!

Yes, it was Auburn when they had the Olympic distance.  That bike was freaking brutal, especially after coming out of the water 2nd to DFL.  And crashing on the bike within the first mile.  And then running in 100F.  Can you tell, I am still traumatized?  Well...not really.  I kept at it.  and here we are 4 seasons later and aiming for my first IM!

That was not even on my radar after that race.  Not even a little bit.
